hello!

i was thinking of giving buying this deck for my exchange student sister for christmas. she is really interested in the tarot and i have given her a few readings, and i think a deck of her own would be nice for her to take back to japan.

im just wondering if the booklet thing that comes with it has any japanese translation in it, or is it fully english?

im in a small town in ontario, far from cities, so my places of buying decks is rather limited, so i would like to know more about this because i could get it off the net, but i would like a preview...

any words on the deck?
thanks!

I love this deck and think it is absolutely beautiful. It is elegantly drawn, serene and richly colored. It was the first deck with unillustrated pip cards that spoke to me. I received it from a friend and the booklet was not with the deck, so unfortunately I can't answer your question about the language -- but I can attest to the dignity and beauty of the cards.

All the cards visually:

To me, it was one of Stuart Kaplan's best combination of folktales, which he explains in English, and the style of Japanese art--the artist worked for the Angel Playing Card company in Japan.

The majors (22), courts (16) and 40 minors are to me a very pretty mix. The 40 minors seem to me to mimic and pay homage to the hana-fuda card game of insects, animals, flowers and scenery in Ukiyoe landscapes.

However, the ordering of the majors are Marseilles in that Strength is 11 and Justice is eight. This works fine for me, but your take may differ.

If you do go into further research on Japanese motifs, I did make a few suggestions on another thread. As an art deck, I find it pleasant, decorative and pretty. My appreciation has emotional and associative bias...others may not find it a good reading deck or fun to explore.

I hope these ideas help you...half.com or some discount bookstore sites (abebooks.com) might be able to get this readily available, in-print title for less than Amazon.com.
