I have often looked at the Tarot Fortune Teller Greeting Cards in the US Games catalog.
They are done by an artist named Kessia Beverley- Smith.
I always wished that she would do a tarot deck.
Her greeting cards are so beautiful.
They are done in watercolors.
Well, I was snooping around on Amazon tonight when I noticed her name.
And she's releasing a tarot deck through US Games that you can pre order now.
Its called the Enchanted Forest
March 1st is the release date.
I was wondering if anyone else had any info on this deck.
I did a search but came up with slim pickings.

You can see a sample of her work here..
www.usgamesinc.com
Punch Tarot catalog then..
Punch greeting cards and you can see her style of work.
Her cards start on the bottom of page two with the Strength card.

Wow, that is interesting, it reminds me period paintings and the red dress on Strength is rather interesting. The World scene in the woods also has a woodland, old-fashioned dreamy look that reminds me of some kind of "Gypsyish" setting. The fact that Strength is 11 shows me that it is an older style...I wonder if the publisher will keep the old style numbering.
A favorite woodland setting Italian language tarot of mine is the Gitani--which actually has similarities to a Dotti Taracco. If they continue to have an old fashioned numbering and setting, this might be a lovely set to look forward to soon! I'll keep an eye on this thread for those who would report back once it's out...

Hi Moongold and Mari.
You can pre order the deck for $12.00 at Amazon so I did.
Should be out in March. But you know how that goes.
I'll put a little review of it in this thread when I get it, for anyone that's interested.
Mari, I thought you might find this deck interesting since you study watercolors.
I'm glad you saw the thread.

Hi Lark
I followed your link, and her art work is beautiful, I can see why you want a deck of her greeting cards. I looked for her new deck and was not able to find any pictures of it.
Were you able to find a preview?

Hi Majecot,
I did a search and I could find nothing.
I don't even know for sure if the tarot greeting card pictures are in her deck.
I hope they are.
I preordered it blind.
For $12.00 why not hey...
I just though maybe I could email USGames and ask them about it.
I'll post the answer in this thread if I hear anything.

Does anyone have any updates on this deck???
I just did another search for both the deck and the author...still NO pictures!!! ARGH!!! I am tempted to pre-order it, sight unseen, based upon how much I love her greeting cards. I can't believe it is scheduled for March release, yet is not even listed on the US Games website!!!!
If anyone can help us get more info--and most importantly, pictures of the cards--that would be much appreciated! Maybe someone knows someone who knows the artist or works for US Games??? Wish I could help, but I "don't got no connections...":P
Thanks!

UPDATE!!!
Here is the email I received from Liz Kerkstra/US Games today:
Thank you so much for inquiring about the upcoming Enchanted Forest
Tarot deck by Kessia Beverley-Smith. She is a very talented and
sensitive artist, and the deck will be lovely.
To answer a few of your questions:
--Although painted in a similar style as her Tarot Fortune greeting
cards, this deck features new art from Kessia
--The minor arcana is pictorial in nature
Although the deck is on our production schedule, we do not yet have a
pub date...my guess at this point is summer 2004. When we get closer to
publication, we will feature the box and some of the cards on our
website.
We appreciate your interest.
Kind Regards,
Elizabeth Kerkstra
Art Director
U.S. Games Systems
So...the tarot cards will be different than the greeting cards, but in the same style...I can't wait to see them! Unfortunately, it sounds like we'll have to wait a few more months (probably a GOOD thing with so many other must-haves coming out in spring!) At least the publisher is aware that there is a great deal of interest in the deck, so maybe they will try to speed up the process (I hope)???

Hi Lunakasha
I just got the exact same email. Word for word.
Well, now we know! :D
I preordered it so I asked in my email if the pips were illustrated and they are, so I'm happy about that.
All new art in the Majors!
I can't wait to see it.

I know...it is going to be amazing, I can't wait!!! Glad to hear that the pips will be illustrated too...that makes a huge difference to me!
So, knowing that the majors will be different from the greeting cards...I'm thinking I'd better put those greeting cards on my wish list too!!! LOL....does it never end???? :P
Thanks for your help lark...we make a pretty good team!

Thanks, Kissa!
I really REALLY want to preorder this deck but.....
after the nightmare situation with the Golden (delayed release dates by USG and canceled preorders by amazon) I am very hesitant to try it! I wish I could feel more secure that if I preordered this deck, it would actually arrive on time...or reasonably "close to" the expected release date......
But you are right....$12 is a STEAL!!!!
I will check the USG website to see if they have posted anything yet....

UPDATE: STILL NO SIGN OF THE ENCHANTED FOREST!
OK....this is what I was talking about in my last post....
There is absolutely NOTHING listed on the US Games website on the Enchanted Forest deck...a search comes up "0 matches"...almost like it doesn't (and will never) exist! Heaven forbid.....:(
And yet, it is available on Amazon.com as a preorder, with a release date of....March 2004!!!
Hmmm...we're getting close to the end of March now....something tells me this deck is probably several months away from being released. I mean, you would think, at the very least, that there would be a mention of it on the publisher's website....maybe some pictures???
I guess this is the way in the publishing world.....*sigh*
I just don't get it.....but I am trying to learn patience! ;)

US Games comes out with their new catalog in June.
It seems like they only update their website after each new catalog hits the mail.
So I don't expect to see or hear anything untill then.
So far my preorder is still valid.
We'll have to wait and see what happens.
As soon as I get confirmation that the deck was sent out I'll post here.
In the email she said Summer of 2004, that could be June, July or August.
We might be in for a long wait. :(

This deck is in the new US Games catalog but it's called "Forest Folklore Tarot."
Mine is still on preorder at amazon under the old name" Enchanted Forest Tarot" with no listing for "Forest Folklore" showing up.
I wonder if I'll ever get it?
Has anyone tried to order it from US Games?

I begin to think that Amazon collects a lot of preorder money when they have no idea about delivery dates. That must create a nice cash cushion for them!
I gave up on preordering after a couple other situations just like this.

Thanks for the update, lark.....I wonder if any of us will EVER get this one??? US Games does not seem very concerned, even after several emails from us....I would not feel much more confident ordering from USG than I would pre-ordering from amazon!!! :P Imagemaker is not the only person who has no faith in amazon pre-orders lately.....*sigh*
I certainly hope that we will at least get a glimpse of the "Forest Folklore" deck one of these days....does it REALLY exist??? :P

They do have actual pictures of it in the new US Games catalog I got in the mail yesterday.
It's very beautiful. I want I want!!!!
Price is 18.00
And this is what they say about it.....
Artist Kessia Beverly-Smith created this mystical deck using traditional watercolor combined with photography.
The enchanting 78 cards are inspired by a unique area of the United Kingdom called the New Forest.
These historical woodlands are lush with wildlife and legends.
The characters are depicted in honor of the people who call this area their home.
The Minor Arcana brings to life forest folklore filled with imps, faeries, nymphs, and dwarves.
Each Ace boasts a particular animal native to New Forest.
Includes booklet of instruction.

I can't wait for this deck either... ! Amazon is no longer taking pre-orders.. they just say the deck is "unavailable".... and US Games has failed to answer THREE emails that I sent. Their customer service is laughable!
Today I actually emailed Kessia through her website.. thought I'd go right to the source. I'll let you know if I hear back.
It is at least promising that US Games shows the deck in the catalogue. It will likely be out soon if that is the case..
From the few scans on Kessia's website, this deck looks to be amazing.. :D

Both the dog and cat are very appropriate -- instead of a sphynx, the contented cat...the climbing/barking dog is quite tarot-true in the Wheel for twentieth-century tarots. I liked the humor and fun of this.

FINALLY - A REPLY...
If I didn't want this deck so badly, I'd be on a boycott of US Games right now for their poor customer service. It took me four emails to get a response on this deck... and sadly, it is little more than we know now...
" The Forest Folklore Tarot by Kessia Beverley-Smith is one of the many new items U.S. Games will be releasing in the near future. Right now however there is no release date. "
We'll just keep on checking... :(

Good grief. All this was going on and I had no idea. Thanks to Dolphin Princess for contacting me, it's been fascinating.
For those who are interested, a little bit of background. I was approached to do the greeting cards about 7 years ago by a company in the UK, they took it to US Games to distribute. At that point I was asked to do a deck and a book by US Games based on the initial 12 cards. I did the major arcana and a few pips to help estimate time and decided it would be too long a project as I had other illustration commitments.
It has been bugging me for ages having a semi finished project and last year I contacted them to see if they were still interested in me doing the whole set. They were, so I got on with it. I carefully selected my models so that their personalities suited the meaning as much as possible. I've had friends, family and neighbours all posing for me, they've been very accommodating to some strange requests.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing the finished deck. It won't be exactly as it is on my website as they have chosen to frame them with a border but the pictures are pretty much the same.
Thank you all so much for your positive comments.

They are working on it as we speak, other than that I don't know. I was always under the impression it would be autumn but it could be sooner. If I hear I will let you know.
Before I was commissioned to do the greetings cards I did have my own deck. I chose the Rider Waite for it's simplicity. I was also sent 4 sample packs by US Games, two of which I like particularly - The New Palladini and Ancestral Path. I also have the Röhrig book because it's an unusual style for the subject.
I have the catalogue and the Vision deck looks interesting. Does anyone have that? Aren't there a lot? Do you collect them?

Yes, I am another rabid fan who is eagerly awaiting your deck's release....I just got the US Games catalog myself, and the pics of your deck are GORGEOUS!!!! Now...I am normally *not* a big fan of borders but....I have to admit that I REALLY love these...thin, black, non-intrusive...the overall look of the cards is stunning!!! They remind me a little bit of the Sacred Circle, in terms of the pagan/nature feel and medieval costumes...and yet they are very unique....I would be interested in hearing more about your technique, blending photography and watercolors sounds fascinating!!!!

i think to answer your questions..
the deck name was changed from enchanted forest to forest folklore. its the same deck and amazon has updated the name to forest folklore too.
also ~ the artworkt itself is the same as the images on kessia's website, but she said that the cards have a dark green border on them, which is why they look much darker on the pre-order page.
this may (or may not) change a person's preference for the deck....
i have pre-ordered with amazon and cannot wait for the deck to be released...

Yes thanks Lee, I pre-ordered this without seeing any scans but I just had to have it because this is where I live.
The New Forest is famous as the hunting ground of King Rufus, son of William the Conqueror who was killed by an arrow while hunting. It was claimed to be an accident at the time but rumours were that it was a plot by his brother Henry.
There are many places, villages and pubs in the forest which were named after some of the people from history. Hence the reason I HAD to have this deck.
There, a little piece of history to go with your new deck everyone.... :)

unless I am told it's only a specific Owl from New Forest and the Lady of Cups rising from a lotus is specific to England, I believe the dreamy pictures might be gently applicable to about anywhere...this has a booklet, but I don't think it needs a full book to work with it...although, it might be nice down the road.
I got the same feeling after studying the Ananda and reading the book...unfortunately for me, the Ananda pictures alone didn't work. But maybe the Forest Folklore will be one of rare decks where there will be instant pictures that touch 'recognition' within one...the Lady of Cups and the Wheel card (on BK's website) was rather wonderful almost instantly for me...

I'm REALLY looking forward to this one-even more so since seeing the scans here on Aeclectic. I like the natural feel of the cards very much-particularly the Wheel of Fortune and the Lady of Cups.

This deck is growing on me...although I don't think it will match the Druid Craft for me :D
I should not be surprised at this anymore...but amazon got me all confused (once again).
Amazon.com lists this for $ 12 dollar, but amazon uk has it for 21 pounds and the German amazon for 28 euros (I did not remember the cents etc.) Well maybe they will adapt it once the deck is actually up for sale. If not I'll order from Amazon.com :D

I love the few scans I've seen, especially Lady of Cups and Wheel of Fortune. One thing I was wondering is if the "rings" suite is supposed to be the earth/pentacles suite. If so it seems a bit odd to have a bird on the ace. The Magician card has four suite signs that include a pentacle but no ring.
I like the dark green borders. If only there were more scans!

You can find it at Magus Bookstore, among others at
http://www.magusbooks.com/main/
I've placed my order too!
Gerbear, you mentioned in another thread that you already have received this deck. Can you let us know what you think about it?
Many thanks!

I haven't had a chance to get too deeply into this deck, as it is in line behind about ten others. However, on first glance, it is well done, artistically, with soft watercolors and photographs.(?) One of my favorite cards is the Wheel of Fortune, which I don't usually pay that much attention to. You can see this card on the Aeclectic scans of the deck. Once I get a chance to read with it, I can offer more of an opinion.

Nice to know it will probably be out sometime soon.
I like browsing through the greeting cards again and thinking it will be out as a lovely deck. I was thinking as a design project, this is the way to go--work out card designs that people could use for others and expand from there.
Thanks for the reminders...I am just happy my local new age store will probably be calling me before the end of December 2004, hopefully, with this order!

The deck is in stock, now, at several stores across the country, so you should be getting a call sooner than you think.

Magus Books is backordered on it. :( However, I did e-mail US Games, and they did say the deck should be out by the end of Nov. Also, as Gerbear said, the deck has already shown up a few places.
I'm going to go pout because I want it NOW.

as Magus Bookstore told me last week they had not seen it, but I could preorder it through the online site. I said no thanks, I was awaiting an order.
And I browsed my usual places, but did not see it either online or in stores.
Probably a matter of a few weeks.
Gerbear, oh fortunate and great scooper of deals! When you get to it, I'd be delighted to hear...I also liked the Wheel of Fortune very much.

Yes, Gerbear - you were lucky to find yours. I ordered it from Magus - only to receive an email a few days later that it was backordered. I wound up cancelling. I was willing to pay more than Amazon so I didn't have to wait - but if I'm going to wait anyway, I'll take the discount.....
I'm sorry - but is ANYTHING from US GAMES not delayed anymore?

I was told that a misprinting of the first version led to delays and that a small supply will start appearing 'soon.' The store owner was so kindly that I said please yes, hold my order...the same store owner remembered that my order for the Roots of Asia was delayed for months--possibly because of misprintings as well.
The good thing would be at least when I get the deck, I think that the lot was initially inspected for quality control...I ended up thinking perhaps I will add the Kay Steventon earlier Spiral Tarot book and deck back into my collection, as I'm really pleased with the Celestial...and Lovers Path, both which were also due out the same year as the Forest Folklore (2004).
Enter Forest Folklore in the search field and you should get a picture.

Hope the ones that you get are great quality!

Has anyone actually flipped through this deck yet? My pre-order from Tarot Garden came in the other day.. The photos of the cards on the site were lovely... they were with white borders or at least thats how i remember them, anyone find the black distracting to the art rather than framing it?

I knew the cards had a dark border but I thought (hoped) it was a very dark green, that seems more fitting than black.
The pictures without border are postcards I think; they look so different without a dark border, I think I would prefer them without a border but I would have to see them in person.

What the heck is the matter with these people...
Why don't they consult us before they print up a new deck. :D
It would save us a whole lot of stress over key words and mismatched, poorly thought out borders.
Is it time to get the corner cutters and sharpe scissors out September Pixie?

I just got my deck today, and it does have dark forest green borders.
Are there two printings out?
Anyway, I was quite astounded....surprised that it had arrived, and quite pleased with the deck too! Much the way I was surprise by the Fairy Ring actually. The colors are lovely... and the backs are gorgeous greens as well.

Oh I'm so glad to hear that SongDeva!
I've had this deck on preorder since January of last year.
It's been much anticipated and I hope I'm as happy with it as you are.
And that I get mine soon too!

The borders are supposed to be dark green - so maybe this is a printing error. You may want to email US Games and ask them or exchange it for a different copy....

No, I don't have the deck yet (but I am keeping an eye on it)
I was just answering to September Pixie's post, who talked about black borders. I thought they were green, I saw them somewhere on-line and it looked like green to me. I am glad they really are.

I haven't gotten the deck from Jeannette yet.. on its way to me I guess.. :) I will admit I liked the postcards better than the sample pics I have seen but I haven't seen them in person yet.. so I can't really judge, I was wondering mostly if it was distracting or if it took away from the actual images themselves :)

and it's listed in 'offline inventory'. I liked the scans after I clicked 'more images' and saw the minors. They look creative and the 'rings' suit reminds me of magic rings and interesting fantasy-fairy stories...

I am riding the fence a bit on this deck now... I have waited ever so long, and then finally I received word that it is available. Do I or don't I???
I really like the initial preview, but once I looked at more scans of it now I am not so sure. I hate to just buy it, just to have it... altho, why now should be any different than any other is beyond me.
*still dithering*

I feel exactly the same.. I bought it.. still waiting on it to get here but after seeing more scans I didn't love it as much as I did the first time.. but I am a good sport.. (I guess I am an eternal optimist) I'll wait and see how I like it.. if not, I'll trade :)

I had this deck on pre-order at Tarot Garden - that was before there were any on-line scans available.
After seeing the scans on AT when they arrived I decided it isn't for me and cancelled the pre-order.
I'd like to know what you all think of it when it arrives.

I put the majors out on the table in order and they look just amazing together. Lush and full and glossy. I'm going to sort them by time of day (day, evening, dawn/dusk, etc.) just for giggles, and see what jumps out at me.

I did a great reading for myself with this deck today. The images are clear and yet soft...very much like sepia tinted photos from the past. GREAT reading. It all made complete sense and was very enlightening.

I was fine until I clicked on the link showing the cards.
As the page loaded a little voice whispered "click the red x... hurry up...you shouldn't be going there... CLICK THE RED X!!!"
Hubby really should listen to me when I ask for the Visa  while he is watching the playoff game.
At least it was on sale.:D

I admit the beautiful and lush Druidcraft and Lovers Path are large things to carry around, so I actually use the Celestial, some Lo Scarabeo decks and now the Forest Folklore for 'snackpack' size tarots that give evocative pictures as a pal to a meditative dream journal with questions...I'd like to see a 78-card guided meditative book...with a nature-rich and imaginative tarot like this. The closest tarot journal workbooks that I can think of that I like to browse include the majors-only "Tarot Journeys" or "Following Your Path and "Magical Course in the Tarot."
This deck is a nice cross-over design to me.
I very much like the Ananda for it's warm-to-me photo-fantasy collage, but miss the humanity and beautiful greenery of earth in the minors. I also like the beautiful courts and forest theme from a Lo Scarabeo, small Italian version of the Hidden Folk (Alba Dorata) and have used it for fun storytelling.
But the Alba Dorata can be a little too robust or limiting because of me--not because of the deck. I liked the small Forest Folklore as a carrying deck. I like the blend of some facial, floral or leaf detail and the way the people melt into the beautiful painterly backgrounds...kind of a softer take on 'Where Dreams May Come,' an oldish movie, and yet some fantasy takes that reminds me of the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. Maybe even Harry Potter?
Just my impression. The green borders remind me of malachite and marble and the gloss to the deck is quite nice.
Regards,
Cerulean
