For those that love to buy tarot decks I was wondering what your first new tarot deck of 2004 was? Did you buy it for any special reason?
My first tarot deck of 2004 was the Wolf Pack tarot deck (actually my boyfriend bought it for me :) but I really love all the wolves in it! I also find it a really neat deck for one card future readings (not fortunetelling future but just future focus)
Did you buy it for any special reason? It is the one deck I asked for for Santa and santa didn't buy it for xmas so I had to have it :)

When, in response to another thread, I realized I really only use 3 of my dozen or so decks (Universal Rider, Aquarian and Hudes), I started to think it was time to pass the other decks along. Uh huh. I'm waiting for the Golden - definitely the next deck I want to buy.

Mine was the "Healing with the Angels Oracle Cards" that I purchased right on January 1. It was my fave bookshop's "Annual Customer Appreciation Day," an event that I look forward to every year--everything in the store is 25-50% off!
I made a special day of it to buy my angel cards...
For actual tarot, my new (albeit pre-owned) Celtic Tarot came to me just last week.
This is a good record for me--I'm not nearly as greedy and obsessive as I used to be...really!

HI,
After seeing the Mini Hanson Robert deck sold at Barnes and Noble, I had to get it.
And it arrived today (and yes fits perfectly in my small red celestial bag).
I'm happy for now-until another deck catches my eye..

I bought the Miracle Tarot - a Japanese anime deck that's been on my list for a long time. I'm trying to be good, and only buy one deck a month, but it's difficult - there are so many great decks out there.
I came within a whisker of buying the Tarot of Prague today...

For the past 18 months, I've averaged about four decks a week, so this year, the pace continues. The first of twenty three so far this year was Elksinger's Perfected Tarot. I only read with the same three I've had for twenty five years, and the rest of them don't get in the way, nor are they a bother. I'm a collector.

First deck of the year was the Cosmic Tarot. En route are
The Goddess Tarot
The Voyager Tarot
Art Nouveau Tarot
and a still-unfinalised sale is underway between myself and Pollux, for the Comparative and Vision Quest decks.
In Dublin, there are only about four shops that sell any tarot decks at all, and the selection isn't very wide. I went into Yellow Brick Road with friends a week ago, and bought a deep green crystal pyramid and a cloth to store a deck in.
I couldn't decide between the Cosmic and the Adrian decks. The girl on the Adrian Deck box looks a little like me - I am small and pale with dark hair, and my sign is Aquarius. The girl on the box is acting as the water carrier. I wanted that deck too, but the Cosmic seemed to call to me more. The Adrian felt too self-involved, too self-glorifying in a way. Don't ask me to explain that! It remains on my wishlist, but not as a primary deck.
I am very happy with the Cosmic. Next stop - tarottotes.com!

I bought the Vargo Gothic Tarot. I have wanted it for quite a long time and since I didn't get a new deck for Christmas I gave a present to myself. :) My special reason was that in the dark wintertime (when does the summer come ??? :( ) I like to use dark decks as well. Besides, my Gothic Vampires demanded a playmate. ;)
But as spring comes closer and closer (even when it comes slow as a snail) I'm already thinking about a nice, cheery and delighting tarot for the spring mood. Any suggestions?

I saved some good money for the shipping of the decks Redwood gave away freely, and I had still some money left, so I bought the Light and Shadow Tarot that hexadecimal was selling. I should get it soon.
I saw in store the mini The Goddess Tarot, when I went to a bookstore to buy Wicca books, I was tempted to take it because that deck is on my wishlist, but frankly, seeing that tiny deck just confirmed to me that I prefer large decks.

Hello!
Since the question is the first deck "I" purchased, I'd have to say the Old English Tarot for myself as a birthday gift. I just bought Lord of the Rings Oracle from B & N the other night for $7.98 too.
For my birthday I did receive Hudes, Healing with Fairies, Messages from Angels and Magical Mermaids and Dolphins.
Take care,

I just did some shopping and had great fun. I picked up:
Tarot of the Renaissance
Tarot Art Nouveau (Castelli)
Bruegel Tarot
Faeries Oracle-Brian Froud
They all look like such fun, and full of interesting symbolism to learn and compare to the RWC's. This brings my tarot collection up to 11 decks, and I still have some Christmas money to spend! I am not sure what is next....possibly Morgan Greer, Aquarian and who knows. Always up for suggestions! I also want the Victoria Regina. My other decks include:
Universal Waite
Sacred Rose
Medieval Scapini
Goddess
Gendron
Robin Wood
Old English

Aahhh.... It does my heart good to see so many people buying so soon after Christmas! Relieves a little of my guilt, I think. ;)
So far this year, the decks I've ordered have been, "Oh, that's too good a price to pass up!" But nothing that I really needed or had to have. But when you see a deck for $1, you just don't pass it up! lol
The deck that I RECEIVED first this year, even though I ordered it last year, was the Blue Rose Tarot.
I LOVE THIS DECK!! So much so.... Did you see my avatar? :P

The first deck I bought this year is my third Robin Wood deck...
Now don't look at me like that! I NEEEEDDEDDDD it.
Honest...
One for the Spirit Room, one for the Fair, and one for the bedroom.
I know that doesn't sound rational.
But I don't plan on being rational this year.
I also think I need a second Morgan Greer.
Last night I bought The Fairy Pack by Claire Nahmad.
Because I am a push over for anything to do with the Faeries.
Decks I will get this year no more putting off....
Golden (on order)
Rune Cards by Linsell and Partridge (on order)
Margarete Peterson (actually went to order this last night and they were sold out :( )
Gilded (if it comes out this year)
Tarot of Prague
Illuminated
And anything else I find on a great big, incrediable, can't believe it, have to have it, just couldn't leave it there SALE..

I've been going down my budget and wishlist and had a few 'pending purchases.' I'd wanted to have a few more anime/fine Japanese illustration sets and so have the Amano/RG Veda on order...
The inexpensive mignion Universal by Roberto DeAngelis and Marseilles in Jane Lyle's Tarot Set pleased me as a few first purchases, one at about $10.00 and the other at $13.00
But I was checking out the stores on a beautiful winter sunny day, feeling happy I'm not coughing for the first time in four weeks and that my husband's tests for his stomach bug aren't too serious...and a used bookstore yielded a rather interesting old book by Barbara Walker, which was better that I expected in terms of combining 20th century ideas of 'sacred' symbology with many tarot cards. I don't want the deck, but I was pleased to read in detail much of her information (best read it as beautiful myth and creative association, not historical at all, as Rachel Pollack describes the book/deck in the New Tarot) ...so I wandered into a new New Age store wondering if there was a 20th century deck that gave a sunny, enhanced view of people, animals and tarot depictions.
The Gendron is a Springlike deck...
I've given away many too-soft-for-me decks, because something for me was lacking. Well, I did see a note by Demonesse saying that the Gendron had a good LWB and decided to take another look. Strangely, the laminated, detailed cards were very clear to me and the mix people and depictions are more modern than medieval, but there is a flavor of the old with the new...and in an on-the-fly comparison with my Scapini's Stained Glass, this has a warm and inspirational flavor for how I want to read card images. It really reminded me of a grandmother who collaged with a combination of seeds, magazine clippings, stickers and her leftover sewing scraps...so this is special to me.
Also, the colors of plants, animals and mix of humanity can be silly (elongation in some images; some male images remind one of airbrushed romance figures), sweet and sometimes just deliciously different. It still reminds me of a gentle flavor that touches me.

Scapini
but i did remove some from my wishlist in an attempt to keep to the decks that i actually use on a regular basis.

I haven't ordered so far this year but I did have the Sacred Circle come just after Christmas. I do keep looking at the Russian Tarot of St Petersburg though. I should have ordered this deck when I first wanted it because now for some reason Amazon have added nearly £10 pounds to the deck/book set and its a 4 to 6 week wait. It would be cheaper and quicker to order the deck and book separately, which is probably what I'll do. :D

I'm pleased to be the first to say that my first deck of this year is the Tarot of Transformation, it's beautiful and I love it. It is very non-traditional and it took me literally hours upon hours studying and comparing it with my Hudes to draw the connections and understand the cards, but I think we have a connection because of it. I also ordered the Tarot of Mermaids but it was back-ordered so it won't be here for a couple of weeks.
For the past 18 months, I've averaged about four decks a week, so this year, the pace continues. The first of twenty three so far this year was Elksinger's Perfected Tarot. This thread doesn't help me, for the past few days, even though I JUST got a new tarot deck and have another coming soon, I can't help but want a spread cloth and the Faeries Oracle. They all seem to be calling to me, ahhhh! This isn't good since I was just laid off and have to move in March! :)

On New Year's Eve I received two decks in the mail, so I'm counting them! The Osho Zen and the World Spirit. I carry the WS with me to work each day, and I pull an OZ card at night. They're very good mates to have!
I just received some Rune Cards in the mail last week, by the same artist who did Tarot of the Old Path. They're gorgeous.
I used what was left on my Barnes&Noble card to purchase the Fairy Pack deck and book, as well as a nifty little I-Ching book to help me decipher my Barbara Walker I-Ching of the Goddess deck.
And en route is the darkly delicious Black Tarot!!
Whew, and it's not even February. Was it only last year that I managed to exist with just ONE deck???

I actually had sometime ago put Tarot for the Restored Order on my wishlist, but am awaiting for the book through Amazon.com. But since you mentioned Elksinger, another of those 'perfected' tarots, I did an online search.
Elksinger was another long-time out-of-print tarot that I had heard about, but I figured it was going to be like the Servants of Light or Greenwood, long our of print and out of my budget. But because Gerbear mentioned it, look:
http://www.elksinger.com/tarot.html
Later: oops, I saw the price and do not like it that much. I'll take my chances with the Restored Order, kind of a Waite clone with a difference, instead, and the price/value of the Restored Order is such that I might use the deck.
Thanks!

I had some Christmas money left and Joan Bunning's sale came up- 15% off and she pays all the shipping (which came to over $8.00, bless her heart). So I got Tarot of the Animal Lords, which I adore, and the Tarot Affirmations deck. I don't read with the Affirmations deck, but I do a 3 card draw with one of my other decks every day, one card of which I put in an inexpensive lucite picture frame on my bedside table. Sometimes I will pull the Affirmations card that matches that card to give me more food for thought. I went into a thrift shop and found a nice wooden recipe file box for a dollar that the Affirmation cards fit in perfectly; I just have to flip to the right card. Cool. I also got the Rohrig book, as my first try at getting one from half.com didn't work out as it was not in as good a condition as stated (I did get reimbursed). I also recently traded for a Tarot of the Cloisters (a 4 1/2" round deck), and on ebay I won a round, dome covered, glass butter dish that it should fit in perfectly. The dish is painted in pastels with a rabbit figure on the top of the dome- very springlike.
Speaking of springlike, Darla, the Nigel Jackson deck has some lovely colors- and several cats, as well. You can check it out at www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1567183654/ref=sib_dp_pt/002-9254087-2714427#reader-link ; you can only see the Magician and the Popess, but though you can view more cards at other sites, I went to several and do not think the scans do as much justice to the true colors of the cards as this link.

My first deck of 2004 is the Radiant Rider-Waite. I purchased it to go along with Joan Bunning's Learning the Tarot, and will be using both the deck and the book for an online tarot course through B & N. Anyway...the interesting thing is that I have stubbornly resisted purchasing the original RW because I have a strong dislike for the coloring of it. However, when I first laid eyes on the Radiant RW, I could not believe how beautiful it was!
Just received my new deck today, and am anxious to start using it. I have many decks on my wish list, with the priorities changing daily (hourly) :) Right now I am seriously considering the Gill and Hanson-Roberts, which have been on my list forever, and some "new" temptations: Fairy Wicca, Fey and New Palladini.
Best wishes to all for a happy & prosperous 2004!
:) Karen

Hi Lunakasha,
I had the same reaction to the Rider that you did - did not like the colors at all - so I had been using the Universal unti lthe Radiant came out. I love the softer colors of the Universal and the actual drawings are "truer" to the Rider than the Radiant. I had not noticed that there were differences until someone else pointed it out. So I placed my Rider on the left, Radiant in the middle and Universal on the right and compared the Majors side by side. Universal is truly a different coloration of the Rider, but even that makes some of the facial expressions look different. Radiant has altered some of the figures and changed some of the colors - particularly the backgrounds.
I do still like the Radiant very much. I used it in an end of the year class for a reading for the year 2004 and was very pleased with the way it read. One thing I noticed - and you may too, besides the odor (which does wear off in time) is that when I looked at the backs of the cards after class, I could see marks from where each card had been handled. I don't know if this is because of the cards being laminated, or if someone in class just had greasy fingers - but I had never before noticed fingerprints on any cards that were handled in class before. I do like the laminating (I think that may also be the case with the Winged Sprirt Tarot, which I am using this week and seems very alike in texture to the Radiant) mainly because I tend to be a bit "rough" with my cards - seems I'm always skinning some one or other, making the layers peel although I don't mean to be so rough with them.
