I wanted to buy a larger Thoth deck just to do studies with and didn't want to wait for the Swiss version to be mailed. So I went to my local Borders Bookstore and bought the green USGames version. I have never liked the green tinge to it but thought I could deal since it was just going to be a study deck.
But to my huge surprise and delight when I opened the box the cards had the same white border as the regular sized (the one with the three magicians)!!!!! And it had the extra card as well!!
I hunted through the LWB to see if they said anything about the change. This is what I found.....
"In order to maintain the integrity of the deck, a standardized border that was omitted in the original printing has been copied from the paintings and is included in this new edition."
YEA!!!!!!

Wow, that is great -- I had gotten used to the sickly green cast of the cards, but it would be such a delight not to have it!

I recently started studying some of Crowley's writing and about a week ago I picked up the thoth deck for myself. I can see how it might induce nightmares as I've picked up kind of a scary vibe off it from the beginning, but so far I find it very interesting. I'm posting because I'm unsure of what the extra card is for. Can anyone help me out?

Hi Faunabay,
Have you got the ISBN number for it.
I would love another large size Thoth after using my standard and pocket versions. My other large Thoth is the sickly green version which I don't use. Amazon still sell the green one so I would want to be sure before I ordered off them - wouldn't want to end up with twin sickly green Thoths :D

Cool.
I was looking at Alida store the other day, contemplating the Swiss version. Now I don't have to. :)
Emily: Ewww, I wouldn't want two of them either! ;)
Kosmos: Do you mean the extra Magus cards? I believe they're just there for choice.

But if someone who has the icky green version :) would be so kind as to check and make sure it's different from theirs, that would be great. Because I'm not 100% sure it would be different, as it is still in the same type of green box that the green tinged one.
I am just sooo happy to have the larger cards!! I'm seeing tons more detail than I saw in the regular size. I still am not sure I'll actually read with it, but am having fun studying the cards to get more insight into my Via deck (which I absolutely love!!). And I'm waiting patiently (sort of LOL) for my Tarot of the Spirit to get here!!!

The extra card is Crowley's personal magical seal called the "Unicursal Hexagram or Hexagram of the Beast".
I personally don't do anything with it, but then I don't actually do much, other than study, with the deck.
Someone who uses, and knows, the deck alot can probably tell you better than I what actual use it has.

Kosmos, there have been several threads about the Unicursal Hexigram (depicted on the extra card in the Thoth deck). If you click on the Search button in the upper right-hand corner of your screen and type "unicursal hexigram" into the search field, you will find a great deal of information.

The icky green version that I have had for 4 years has the very same ISBN #........0-913866-15-6....read right off the box.
Anyone who buys the large cards should check the actual cards out first.

If they are using the same ISBN number it must be a re-printing but that means that it could be pot luck as to which deck you get - the green version or the newer more colourful one.
Rules out ordering on amazon then, it sounds like its a deck that you're really going to have to have a look at before you buy it.
Think I'll maybe leave it for a while lol

I did take a chance and ordered the larger Thoth from Amazon UK, I also ordered The Book of Thoth to go with it.
They came this morning and like Faunabay I was pleased to find out that the only thing green about these cards is the box :)
They have the same clarity as the smaller lavender box version, but the colours when compared are a little more brighter than the smaller version. These cards really do seem to come alive in your hands, the colours are so clear and vibrant - Its a really attractive version.
But I wonder if Amazon UK have made a mistake with the pricing because I only paid £8.57 for this deck which makes it cheaper than the smaller Lavender box version. Just thought I would mention this because its only a matter of time before Amazon UK realise their mistake then the deck will be priced up.
Edited to say:-
I've just checked the ISBN and its not the same as Faunabay's - the one I have is 0-87728-452-0 and on the back of the cards is 1996 AGMuller

This ISBN business is very interesting. I've almost decided to take a chance on buying another one, in the hope that it will not be green, and if I do I'll take the ISBN from your new deck with me to the store. It would be nice to have one that isn't tatty, even if by a fluke it's still green -- so I wouldn't be terribly disappointed, either way. At the local bookstore, the large Thoth costs $18, and the small one in the lavendar box costs $16.
Thanks for this info, Emily. I hope that you will really enjoy the book, too.

My box has the isbn of 0-913866-15-6 and the border is the only thign that provides a "sickly green feeling" at all. The size is appropriate and the feeling is strong but not overwhealming.
The difference in the ISBN code for emily's is the differnce in publishers between the countries.

Hi Astraea,
After a couple of cups of coffee, I had a moment of clarity, rare for me, but when you go and look for your new Thoth, take them out of the box and if the 1996 AGMuller is printed on the back of the cards then you might end up with a non-green copy.
I think these new version decks should be stocked by now, Amazon UK has them, so if the book shop offers you an older version you'll know its older back-stock.
The border to this new Thoth is a lovely silver grey colour. I compared it to my older green tinged Thoth and you can really see the difference.
Hope you manage to get one. :)

Thank you, Emily! I will indeed check that out. I am so glad that the newer cards don't have the green hue!
