Renniasance Fair Deck?

I have been invited to a Renn. Fest next year at my high school to read cards and I just wanted to ask what decks to use so that no one wil get too offended. I will use any that i have but i mean for like a teenage group, what are good decks?

Probably one that doesn't look scary, has no nudity in it, or has 'dead people' on it (I'm thinking of some of those vampire tarot decks on this one). If it was reading for younger children I'd recommend the Mary Hanson Roberts deck or the Whimsical. But for teens, how about the Animal Lords, one of the Egyptian decks, or (if you're into oracles) the Brian Froud Fairy oracle. That one is gorgeous.

There's a thread called 'showing all the cards in the deck' that has a long list of pages you can check out what all the cards look like in various decks. That might help you to choose one. Here it is: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17948

The first question I would ask is, what is YOUR definition of being too offended.

I totally agree with HudsonGray that nudity is a no-no and cards with dark images may be too harsh, but if I were a teenager again, I think a vampire based tarot would REALLY hold my interest (then again, if I were a teenager, a deck with nudity would be even more welcome, hehe).

I guess it depends on what the local authorities and parents feel. I am a bit surprised that this will even be allowed in a high school because of how narrow-minded people can be these days, but then I noticed you were from Louisiana and tarot is probably not as frowned upon down there - people seem to be more savvy and realize that tarot is not part of the dark side of the occult.

The final suggestion for a deck would also hinge on how comfortable you are doing a reading. Do you feel more comfortable with a RWS deck or can you pretty much read with any deck you pick up.

The Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg is a pretty deck and, apart from Judgement and The World, everyone is dressed. It is a RWS clone by the way. The Phantasmagoric Theater may be a deck that has the eye candy to appeal to younger people. The characters are cartoonish in nature (some have compared it with the Nightmare Before Christmas and/or the Rugrats). The meanings are not obvious but it is a fun deck to interpret and is currently one of my 4 study decks. There is also a study group on the boards here. There are some dark cards on the deck but not overtly.

Good luck - please be sure to keep us posted on your experiences at the Faire.

Do you want to go with a deck that looks like it would fit the renn. time?

I would have to say that renn fair folk tend towards the bawdy and I would be surprised if someone was actually offended by nudity in a deck.

A bunch of decks come to mind but I'm going to suggest the Waking the Wild Spirit deck by Poppy Palin.... you'd have to get used to it as it's not very traditional but I thikn I would prefer that as I thikn many folks who go to renn fairs have a lot of exposure to tarot and this would be new for them.

Other ideas

Renaissance Tarot (Williams)
Tarot of the Old Path
World Spirit Tarot (I always like to go multi-cultural when reading for large groups)
Marco Polo Tarot
Legend: The Arthurian Tarot
The Buckland Romani Tarot
Old English Tarot
Nigel Jackson Tarot

I'm with Shade in thinking that the Nigel Jackson deck would fit the mood. The first thing I thought when I got mine was that it would look perfect at a Renn. Faire. It has a serious, mystical look (even the backs) yet it's quite colorful and the figures are accessible, ie: Queens "look like" Queens, Death is a skeleton, etc., so the kids could relate to them.

In highschool I used a Rider-Waite deck and no one was ever offended by the nudity on it, it's really minimal and you see just as much looking at greek sculpture in a history class. Plus it's a deck most people, even people not very familiar with tarot, recognize. I think it's worth considering.

But then again I've been out of highschool for only 5 years and I'm not entirely sure what teenagers are into anymore but I have a feeling you might do well with the Froud fairy oracle or the Fey Tarot. When I was a teenage girl I would have melted on the spot seeing those cards, but I don't think the illustrations would put guys off at all either.

I've done a few readings for my teenage son's friends and use the Universal Rider Waite, because I agree mostly everybody has some exposure to it. But the World Spirit is good, too, and teenagers can handle a lot (and some do have some truly intense personal lives). Bring a few along with you, and let them choose! (I don't think there's one of us here with only one deck to our name!)

The African Tarot has cartoon-like pictures that would be fun....Ibis tarot seems non offensive and has an intriguing historical egyptian theme boys may find interesting...Zerner farber would appeal to girls...my 14 year old son likes the morgan-greer deck just for an example...or how about the Lord of the rings tarot....

Today I received The Connolly Tarot an the Paladini (Spelling?) courtesy of a fine lady that goes by the name of lark here at AT. I like the Connoly cuz te nudity is minimal and the other because it has beautiful art.

Shade  19 Feb 2004
I would recommend the Palladini for the Renn Faire as the detailed costuming of the characters wold probably be appreciated there.

I have a webpage devoted to this topic

If your concern is not historical authenticity, but rather whether a deck would be appropriate for use around children, I also have a page for that
