I really like the site link (at the end-link to Joan Cole's site with picture examples of her 70 reviews/decks) and thinking of how to classify sets or types of my favorite reading decks:
* Rider-Waite "Clones"
* Might Be Appropriate For Children
* New Age and Herbal
* Society for Creative Anachronism / Renaissance Faire
* Elvish and Fae
* Hippie
* Native American
* Crafted from Fabric, Beads or Clay
* Photographic and Computer Manipulated
* Cold War and Beyond
* Woman Mother Goddess
Do you have a favorite category above or can you name a style of tarot that you like best, based on your current reading decks that works best for you? Or do you just have some in a category that is just a point of collection? (I think one or two from the Elvish and Fae are still in my collection for the emotional attachment, but 'retired'--Arthurian and Legend.
I'm going through my mental list--and I actually didn't realize how many photographic tarots that I still have and sometimes use.
I'd definitely add to my reading deck favorites currently the category of Asian-influenced and maybe would further subdivide the Renaissance category to certain regional patterns such as Northern Italian or French...

Hmmm....
Of the decks I have right now, none of them fits these categories:
* New Age and Herbal
* Might Be Appropriate For Children
* Elvish and Fae
* Hippie
* Woman Mother Goddess
Here's where my decks fit on the list:
* Rider-Waite Clones--Aquarian
* Society for Creative Anachronism / Ren Faire--Visconti Gold
* Native American--Star That Never Walks Around
* Crafted from Fabric, Beads or Clay--Zerner-Farber
* Photographic and Computer Manipulated--Animal-Wise
* Cold War and Beyond--New Century
It doesn't look like I favor any one category...I don't have enough decks, perhaps?
More likely, my "collection" just reflects my manic nature! :eek: :D
Even when my deck ownership went into the triple digits, I favored certain deck types only in phases, but nothing ever consistently.
That being said, I think my favorite phase of collecting was the wave of historical I amassed for quite an ample while...but I never got remotely close to the depth and appreciation you have accomplished with your decks, Mari_Hoshizaki! :D

There were a number of much earlier threads which also discussed classifications - but could only find one easily:
here, from two years ago (nearly exactly)
I'm not sure if I would use exactly the same rubrics as I did then, but would certainly not deviate much therefrom...

I think all my favorite decks are hippie RW clones that are appropriate for children. :D

Hm. My decks aren't classified...
I would submit, though, that there is at least one category missing. There is a "Native American" deck, but no category for other cultural influences. I can think of a number of decks based specifically on, for instance, Japanese, Voudon, Australian, Finnish... themes.

I think I could classify my favorite decks in three ways:
1. Whimsical
2. Elvish / Faerie
3. Nature/Animal
That pretty much sums up the things I love about my favorite decks.... :D

Funny you mention this site, Mari, as I was visiting it the day you posted, it is one of my favourite references!
And I found out that most of the decks I feel attracted to are Woman Mother Goddess, formerly known as "Unashamed to be a woman" ;) : Ancestral Path, Wheel of Change, Wise Woman.
Then come the Rider Waite clones, especially the ones appropriate for children, I'm only 31 years old, you know ...

I seem to go through stages where I collect decks of various themes. A few of them:
Egyptian
Native American
Celtic
Goddess
Artist-Inspired (Bosch, Blake, Bruegel, Durer, DaVinci)
I often use Tarot as a way to learn about other cultures, history, literature, so these theme-fests tend to be accompanied by heavy bouts of book buying! But it feels like I learn so much faster when Tarot is involved! :)
Peace,
Melvis

Hmm, I hadn't really thought about my decks in terms of categories. I s'pose I have a couple of Faery/Fey types -- but the ones I have are the only two faery type decks I have been attracted to so far, the Fey Tarot and the Faeries' Oracle.
I don't know where to put the Robin Wood in those categories -- RWS clone? kind of... to me, more a paganish interpretation of RWS. I'd call the Rohrig Thoth-based/Fine Art. That leaves my no-name deck, which I'd call more Folk Art.
"Crafted from fabric, beads, or clay"???
