I gotta get this deck

I found a glimpse of "The tarot of the new vision" at www.tarotgarden.com and i feel that it will be my next deck. Does anyone have this deck and what do you think of it?

sneak peak here http://www.tarotgarden.com/boutique/onlinecatalog.php?view_title=Tarot+of+the+New+Vision&pageenter=0

Hi Paradoxx,

I got the New Vision a few weeks ago - and love it. The 180 degree turn gives a whole new perspective - sometimes a surprise, sometimes very logical, but always something new to think about. I have only worked briefly with it & plan to devote more time to some serious study later on - the first think I want to do is put it side by side with my Rider, Universal, Radiant and do a card by card comparison. I had had not idea that the Radiant was so different until I followed a suggestion someone else made about the side by side. Makes for a whole new way of thinking about something I thought I already knew.

I had seen only two of the cards when I said the same thing!

"I gotta get this deck!"

So, when I finally did get it, I had wanted to be surprised by each new image that came with the turning of each card in my hand.

Understand, that I grew up reading and adoring the Rider-Waite-Smith, so I had some ideas already in my head about what might be "on the other side"

I was certainly surprised.

Some of the cards...like the four of cups, the eight of cups, and the two of pentacles made me grin (there are sheep there, in the two... and that delighted me!)

Other cards, like the Hanged Man...just made me sad, that the image didn't fit at all with what I had come to know and love about the card.

And some cards...like the Emperor, the Queen of Wands, The King of Swords...indeed anyone on a throne...just annoyed me.

Overall, I was completely disappointed with the deck.

Perhaps if there had been a book explaining what the images meant to the artists, and why they put certain things in the cards (like a lot of snakes in the majors...) I would have at least felt that they were reasons.

I suppose my expectations were pretty high...and I had come to believe I knew what was in each of those scenes, after reading with the RWS for 20 years.
That these artists had a different idea...didn't really bother me, as much as the artistry in some of the cards.

I guess the original images are just too personal to me, for me to appreciate another strong interpretation of them.

I gave mine away to someone who I hope enjoys them moore than I did!

If you use the images on the cards to explain your readings, the complete reversal of perspective (180 degrees) and new elements to the cards will cause quite a bit of re-thinking. If, however, you use fixed interpretations for your readings, you will, of course, ignore what the card images show.

I tend to see the deck as a novelty deck: good to have for the art and the different perspective, but not really a serious reading deck.

hi paradoxx ... Here's a link to a good thread about this deck a little while back:

http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15474

Given the deck's novelty value, you may wish to consider buying the less expensive, mini-size version of the deck that is soon coming out (or may have already come out).

By the way, it would be interesting if the Comparative Tarot deck by Lo Scarabeo were re-done to remove the Tarot of the Origins and instead include the New Vision as one of the four decks shown on the same card, to accompany the Universal, the Burdel, and the Sphynx decks.

I echo the general sentiment here. However, I saw the deck online and thought it no more than a novelty deck. I saw it at a Borders store and decided to pick it up. I was correct in my initial assumption - it is a great novelty deck and that is about all. Since I have been around the RWS most of my life, I do pull the deck out from time to time for study purposes. I do not regret owning it but would never use it for a reading.

Chronata - I was reading your post, about you had such a clear idea in your head of what you'd want to see "on the other side," and I had to grin - I know you've already started other tarot decks, but it seems like you've just described one more to take on!

Hi Paradoxx!
I have to confess that I don't have the RWS myself, but I am very familiar with it. I think the idea of the Tarot of the New Vision is intriguing, even charming, and I think it would be really interesting  to not just compare each pairing of cards, but to try to do a reading with both. Would it broaden your perspective or focus it?
Let us know if you try working with them both -- I'd be interested in hearing about the experience!

oh no! I wouldn't dare! :D
Besides, it's already been done!

But I can tell ya, that If I did do "the Other Side of The RWS" deck...the Hanged Man would look reeeally psychadelic!

hmmm...maybe I should think about it...after all, I have a lot of watercolor supplies comming to me! :D

This is a deck to make me laugh out loud, just from the creative surprise of it.

I like the idea of using it as a companion card to a reading--anything to bring up a different angle.
