i was relooking through my 78 degrees of wisdom today which is the combined book.
on the illustrations was a waite deck published in the 70s that had shading that i have to have.
1. what is this special edition called
2. is it even aviable today
3. has anyone seen that deck
4. if so do you have scans,
(i didn't post this in the wiat study forum for i didn't think it has anything to do with the study of it , unless the shaded deck get mass produced. )
it is on page 243, the nine of pentacles,
edited to add,
the little desciption is on 2.44 while the picture is on 243.
just says it is an american edition that was published some years ago .
the notion she is looking away from the sun makes a differnce for the card of nine of pentacles. .. WAAAHH SOMEONE HELP :O)

You might check out Holly Volley's Rider website.
I looked, albeit briefly, and it appears that there are a few American editions from the 70s, such as the Merrimack edition and the University Press edition.

I think, if I recall correctly, the De Laurence decks (there are several different versions) were pirated (unauthorized) versions published in the U.S., colored with one or two colors. Here's a thread about them:

So, I think they use the same drawings as the Rider decks but are just colored differently.

i don't think those decks have the nine of pentacles illustrated in the 78 degrees of wisdom.
for i don't see the shading that is on the card on the fool. (of course assuming the shading is consistent throughout).

I just realized I didn't answer Holmes's question, do I like the de Laurence. No, I don't find the limited color palette appealing. I'm a Radiant man myself. :D

The De Laurance RWS decks copied the Pamela Smith images from the official Rider-Waite deck, without permission from the copyright holders. The decks first appeared in 1918 with the cards done with yellow backgrounds. A new orange version appeared in the 1960's, followed by a red version in the 1980's. All of them are OOP and go for quite a lot of money on Ebay; the yellow version has been selling for $500+ US. I like the De Laurance RWS decks, myself, although I have only seen scans, and haven't acquired any of the decks yet. The yellow is on my wishlist of favorite decks.

Holmes, why not just PM or e-mail Kimber and dolphingirl, who posted (in the linked-to thread above) that they have de Laurence decks, and ask them to check out the Nine of Pentacles for you?

Looking at the text that refers to Figure 72, I think that it is likely that the entire deck isn't shaded like that. To me it seems to say that the shading on this particular card is ment to represent the shadow of the sun. This makes me think that it is unlikely to be on other cards.
Here is the text, from page 243 of the combined edition.
"The image in Fig. 72(b), slightly different from the offical Rider version (Fig. 72(a)), comes from an American edition of several years ago. In this Nine of Pentacles a shadow darkens the woman's face, as well as the grapes on the card's right-hand side. Clearly she is turning away from the sun."
I'm curious about the reference to the deck being from "several years ago." 78 Degrees of Wisdom was 1980 or 1983, so that might help in discovering which deck this card is from. I do agree that this shadow does slightly change the meaning of this card.
