I'd like to get my daughter her first tarot deck for her birthday, does anyone have any suggestions for decks that are good for a 14 year old beginner?
Since she was very little, our "thing" has been to get each other faery/fairy cards and presents. So that would be my first choice. But most importantly - since she lives with her father, step-mom and 2 younger brothers - the cards need to NOT be "racey" or "scarey".... her father has no problem with her having a deck, but I just want to make sure her first one doesn't cause any "family turmoil"!
(pre) Thanks for your advice!

Hi Shesawolf,
A friend has the Celtic Dragon Tarot & uses it with her two teenage daughters - I'm not sure whether it has faeries but they love it. The dragon in the Six of Swords reminds me of my dog!! Some of the cards are here:

My own 12yr old loves my new Gilded Tarot. It may be too expensive in the special ediiton & the general release is not until October, but it's worth a look:

I bought my 12 year old daughter the Diamond Tarot. It has the same imagery as the Rider-Waite but has vivid colors and psychedelic borders. The images are smaller and in the middle of the cards. Here is the link to view some of the cards:

The Hanson-Roberts deck is very innoffensive and attractive.

I would recommend The Beginner's Guide To Tarot, written by Juliet Sharman-Burke. This is a deck/book combination pack, available for a bargain price at overstock.com for $11.89 US. I have the set myself, and can vouch for both the cards and the book. The cards are based on the Rider-Waite images, but better drawn. The book is quality paper with sewn binding, not just glued in.

FEY!!!!!
they are not racey and would be very attractive and non-abrasive to the whole household.
oh- then gain, maybe too attractive to the younger ones.
get the big book that goes with it if you choose this deck
the characters in this deck seem predominatly adolecent (yet, not- Fey age is questionable)- there is a good balance of 'age' through the deck, perfect for someone who is in transition between child and adult.

Connolly, Celtic Tarot...or one of my favorite, the Goddess Tarot!

My 13 yr old niece went crazy over my Good Witch Bad Witch cards by Gillian Kemp, and i noticed the author also has the "Faerie Widom Book and Card Set" that is a fifty-two card oracle. The set is at amazon without pics, but barnes and nobles had the G/B Witch set so they may have this one. She also wants the Moon Garden (she reads well with mine) and Celtic Dragon.

I would have said the Celtic Dragon, and, after reading your question, the Fey.
Also, the shapeshifter, by the same author as the Celtic Dragon. The Osho Zen?
The Merry Day is pretty lovely and fairy like.

At the same time, grab the Faeries Oracle, and put it away for her next gift!

Tarot of a Moon Garden is a good one too. The characters in the deck look kind of fairy-like to me.

When I bought my little sister (12 years old) her first Tarot deck at Christmas, it was the Hanson Roberts: perfect for small hands, and not too scary. (I'm not worried about her, but she takes the deck into school, and I wouldn't want any of her classmates to be scared, or the teachers!)
May I also recommend the Robin Wood? There are a couple of cards that have nudity in them (e.g. Devil, Lovers, Star, Judgement) but it's not pornographic. The colouring and art is a bit like the Hanson Roberts, only alot brighter, but the deck does have a slight Pagan flavour to it. (What do Pagans taste like anyway? }))
Another thing I'd suggest is to get her a fairly traditional deck, so she can refer to other decks with ease at a later stage and use most of the books that are available on the market. Hanson-Roberts, Robin Wood, things like that.
Blessings,
Kiama

I got my first deck at 16, and it was a Thoth - waaay too intense just then!
I had my cards read on my 16th birthday and the reader used the RWS - she was a good reader, certainly for me at the time, and took each card and explained where she was drawing her interpretations from. That made it so much easier for me to connect to my second deck, a RWS.
I suggest getting your daughter a deck that she has seen someone else read with - she will already have a basic knowledge of a few cards and may thus feel less overwhelmed by the deck.

I'm wondering about the Whimsical. It doesn't have fairies but it is based on 'fairy tales', is inoffensive to family, and is really easy to read.
Just a thought.

Another one, designed for older children and adolescents (though it would also suit adults!), is the wonderfully designed and Major Arcana only Tarot D'or.

I think the Spiral tarot might be a good choice. Non-scary cards yet it feel like a grown-up deck and when you are 14 that might be what you want.

I'd follow some of you here... Hanson-Roberts (small, nice images). The Beginner's Guide to Tarot, recommended earlier is also an excellent choice. It is really good, cheap, it would be an excellent first set. Very faithful to the RWS imagery and yet, offers new points.
What I would do, if i were you, i would have my daughter sitting right next to me and browse decks with her, asking her to make a list of her 5 "top favourite mega coooool ruling the world champion" tarot decks... This way, you can hardly go for the wrong deck. As teenagers tend to love one day what they hated the day before and vice versa, maybe she's grown out of the fey/fairies phase (unlike many of you here :P). And you still get to choose the one you'll ultimately give her, to make sure it is suitable for siblings/stepmom/schoolfriends...
Hopes that helped...

i've always heard that the connolly is a very christian deck. and two cards are renamed if i remember properly: not death and no devil. maybe it is a good thing for a young beginner?? dunno...
i too think that the rws is the best for beginners but the drawings colours on the yellow boxed rws were a real pain for me as a teenager. the sharman-caselli deck (included in the beginner's guide to tarot) is not that hard on the eyes. i gave up tarot for years because the rws colours bothered/bored me. go for the universal tarot (hanson-roberts) if you want the closest of the closest from rws but with nice colours.
my two cents...
why don't you, shesawolf, have a look at this: http://www.advancenet.net/~jscole/tarotrwsclone.htm then you can choose which category suits you best: recolored version of the rws, closest redrawings, art twist etc.
