Hey all, I've been very interested in the Thoth deck recently...the non-green one with the 3 Magus cards. However I'm wondering, can this deck only be purchased by itself, or is there a book and deck set out there? I don't know much about Thoth symbolism so I would very much like to have a set to help me in my study, but I'm not sure I can get one with this deck. If not, is there a Thoth book I can buy separately? Or do you think a book is even worth it?

Hi Dead Star,
I bought my Thoth (same one with the three Magus) separately and also bought Crowley's Book of Thoth - but it gets very hard to follow unless you already know all about him, his practices and the deck. Much clearer is DuQuettes book about understanding Crowley's Thoth and, my personal favorite for interpretation with this deck, Ziegler's Mirror of the Soul. I have only seen the deck in a set with the Rider - kind of a nice way to get acquainted with both main decks of the Tarot - But I have never seen the set opened, so I have no idea what book comes with it
I have found my study and work with the Thoth deck to be very special - hope it is for you too.

Thanks for the info, Thea Lynx. I think I actually saw Ziegler's Mirror of the Soul sold with the Thoth as a set, somewhere on the internet. That's good to know :) I never really liked this deck, ever since I first saw it I was aversed to it, I thought it was ugly (green) and the artwork confusing, but now it's nagging me so I know I have to get it in order to understand it better :D I think subconsciously I'm just intimidated by it so I know I'll like it better once I have it and understand and read with it. And I'm certainly NOT going to try to do that without some kind of starter guide

Hi Dead Star.
The set with the book Mirror of the Soul is ISBN #0-88079-322-8
there is another set with the large Swiss version cards that I have it has the book Mirror of Your Relationships by the same author with it.
ISBN# 0-88079-471-2
The first set the cards are~ 27/8" x 43/8"
The second set the cards are~51/2" x 33/4"
So I guess it depends on the size of the cards and the book you want both are very good.
The Mirror of the Soul book is a good one to start with.
I know the color on the large Swiss cards that I have is excellent (no green)
Another book besides the DuQuettes that I use a lot is Keywords for the Crowley Tarot by Hajo Banzhaf.
It breaks down all the symbols on the card so you understand why they were used.
Good luck with your new deck!

Hi Dead Star, when i first decided to get a thoth i combed the threads trying to figure out the difference in styles and became EVEN MORE confused. So i bought "The Complete Tarot Kit" by Susan Levitt from USGames, because i needed another pocket rider anyway. Then i just intuitively chose the Lavendar Thoth and it was what i wanted instead of the pocket Thoth. The book that comes in the set is available seperate now, something i think you might like, she takes each card from Thoth/RW and shows a picture of them side by side and gives description and divinatory meaning. Plus she delves into year cards, chakras, numbers, rituals, and "specialty and advanced layouts". Here is an example of SEVEN OF PENTACLES: The number seven is of questioning, seeking, and wondering. In the RW deck, a young man leans on a garden hoe,not yet certain of the outcome of his harvest. Yet much has already been accomplished and steady growth can continue. In the Crowley, dark coins are burdened with the astrological attribute of Saturn in Taurus. The word on the bottom is FAILURE, with heavy Taurus unwilling to change.
I mention this book because it is available separate now. It is "notebook" style, great for laying flat while you look, the pages are in colour too.

Thanks for the info, guys. And scorpio, you must be reading my mind! I just got the Quest Tarot and kept staring at the 7 of Pentacles thinking "I don't like that meaning! That's not right!" and then realized it was based on Thoth symbolism. This is one of the reasons I want to study the Thoth (and get the book with it). Thanks a lot guys!
