Wishlist obsession

Sigh... it seems that every time I get a new deck I'm already with my eye on another one. Does this happen to you?

WolfSpirit  21 Apr 2004
I think most people here know exactly what you mean :D
Having your eye on another ONE is not too bad - how about having your eyes on a whole lot of them ? Sometimes I am obsessive about my wish list, I have to know what they cost, where i can get them, when I can get them...
Always numbering my wish list which one will have to come first...

But when I have taken a long (very long ;) ) breath I can put things a bit more in perspective and not be so impatient.
So maybe I am on my way to true maturity ;)

Aure  21 Apr 2004
All the time... I keep promising I'll stop for a while after this deck.. Then there's another one I have to have.

Right now I'm waiting for the Hadar and already have my eye on Old English and Medieval Scapini... I guess I'm afraid that if I don't buy them now, they will out of print later.

Silly me... Is there a cure, tell us?

contrascarpe  21 Apr 2004
Yup, happens to me all the time. Luckily I have so many now that my cravings are subsiding a little bit ...... not from desire, but because I'm running out of decks to buy, lol.

Having said that, I bought 5 decks in the past week. Go figure.

Orion  21 Apr 2004
I find myself eye-balling a different deck each week! My wish list has grown to about 20 decks now!

13thFaeChylde  21 Apr 2004
I want the Tarot of Prague and the Golden Tarot, all thanks to you people!!!!!

My anniversary is coming up in June...so maybe I'll get the go-ahead to order them for myself, or at least one of them.

le pendu  21 Apr 2004
13thFaeChylde,

I think those are two of the most beautiful decks available!

Check out this thread on Tarot of Prague..

The price is amazing if indeed Amazon is going to be shipping the first edition!

I think we ALL do that... I have something like 11 decks now.. I have owned probably 20 .. and I am wanting probably just as many now! LOL

Simone  21 Apr 2004
OK, may I ask a very dumb question?

What does it bring to own so many decks? When I joined AT, I had 4, three of them I even had forgotten I had (it means I was only using one). Now I have 5, and only because I thought I had that particular deck and was wrong.

I have now rediscovered my other decks, and are getting along just fine with just them.

I get a feeling that if I owned too many decks I'd have too much input, while I just need one at a time anyway.

I think I have been spared this collectionitis thing, because I'm not the type who sees, likes and *absolutely* needs to have it.

So forgive me my dumb question: what is it for?

:D Simone

If wishlist were actual collections, we would all run out of room FAST!!! But als, that would only happen in an ideal world.

Simone, as for your question, I think it has to do with several factors. The first is the artwork itself. A mindboggling amount of work goes into the making of a really good deck, sometimes several years in the making, and as often or not, they're just really beautiful.
The second factor is that every deck-maker has his/her own views and interpretations. Every deck is like reading a different book, or world view. when reading a book about philosophy, you wouldn't be satisfied with one opinion, would you? Same with Tarot decks, every deck "says" something else.
Third, its shopping, everybody likes that, right? :smoker:

laura_borealis  21 Apr 2004
One thing I've noticed is that if I don't get a deck on my wishlist right away, over time my desire for it usually fades. I just went and trimmed my list on the wishlist thread to reflect only the decks I truly want. My "needs" have gotten simpler. I feel like passing some of my current decks on as well. :)

Wellllll, you can look at it that way, but I have always found that it's not the deck that makes the meaning but the reader :) - like with books. It's the readers mind that makes out of the book what he likes.

And I have seen something fascinating lately: I have seen the same question asked twice by the same querent, to two different readers, and the answer was, read out of two different decks, exactly the same in spirit. :smoker:

I have a very long wish list. I recently whittled it down (slightly) and divided it into categories (oop/unpublished etc., maybes, definites, and I put the top ones in order of which ones I want first! :D). Tarot of Prague is right at the top (especially because I'm afraid it will be sold out in a few months :)).

All I know is, after two years of obssessively collecting decks, I realized how little most of them really meant. I have about 9 or 10 decks that I have never even read with. Decks that I just HAD to have! Those don't even count all the ones I used to have on my wishlist that I just "got over" and realized I didn't really want anymore.

I think it all comes down to panic at the false sense of scarcity. We have to own those decks before they are OOP; however, we don't give enough thought to how many decks will really make us happy, or if we really even want the deck in question. The sense of panic wins over and we order the deck.

Thankfully, I'm over it. I experienced the disappointment with decks once too often. I have a very small wishlist and I'm very selective about the ones I order.

The only ones on my wish list are the ones I can't have yet:

Baroque Bohemian Cats Tarot (but I'm pre-ordered!)
Gilded Tarot (I love the Queen of Swords)
and
Aquatic Tarot (which, as far as I know, is not being published)

(Sigh) It happens to me, but not so often as before. By the way, here's a "helpful hints" thread I started.

I sure couldn't say it better myself, I also feel that it is like reading a book. I may have one book I really like alot and go back to and read again and again but I also learn something new and experience something new every time I read a new book as well. Also you have to admit some of the decks just have outstanding artwork.

Lady Eclipse  22 Apr 2004
Hi,

LOL! Yes ALL of the time but you'll get used to it. :-)

My collection keeps getting bigger and bigger but so does my wishlist. Seems every time I come in here, I find at least a couple more decks to add.

Joy to you,
Maralee

When I first got on Aeclectic my wish list was really long - over 130 decks. Right now it's about 26, but of those only about 14 are realistic - of the rest, some are financially out of reach, some are unpublished, and unlikely to ever BE published.

Of course, with new decks being released all the time, I'm sure that it won't ever be down to only the "impossibles".
