Deck Tally Results May 2004

Hehehe.....I am going to keep you curious folk in a bit of suspense while I ramble about some interesting facts. :D The last tally I did was in June of 2003. We had a lot more people on that thread than we do in the current. I hope this will change that and more people will come and post their collections. In the last deck thread, had 174 people participating. This one only has 122. The adverage amount of decks owned per person in the June 03 tally was 24 decks. This tally the adverage is 39 decks per person! In the June 03 Tally 17% of the people owned at least one Marseille type deck. In this tally, 35% of the people own at least one Marseille deck. The count for the Thoth deck only went up by one count, yet the amount of Marseille decks owned almost doubled! and that is with fewer posts and without Diana's collection listed!!! 78% of the people own at least one RWS deck. This includes Universal, Radiant, Albano, and any RWS where it is just the coloring that was changed. Clones like Robin Wood, Hanson Roberts, etc were counted separate There are 1,009 different decks listed! OMG :| that's assuming, of course, that I made no errors Now, for some counts......

Since we can, I assume, safely posit that many or most the folks who are active on this board can be considered "serious tarotists," I thought it might be interesting to compare how the "popular" decks in Mimers count compare with those purchased the tarot-buying public in general. I went through the Tarot Garden sales figures since the beginning (Feb. 2001), and came up with the following "all-time bestseller list." It is, of course, skewed in favor of small press releases, imports (from a North American perspective), high-demand OOP titles, and the like. Your "basic" Rider-Waite decks don't account for a significant part of our sales, because they're distributed so widely that folks are practically getting them in their cereal boxes. But I thought it might be amusing to see some of the types of things sell really well in general, even though many of the things on the top of this list appear very low in Mimers' counting of list members' decks. Anyway, here's the Tarot Garden all-time "top 20," as of 15 May 2004: 1. Gothic Tarot (by Joseph Vargo) 2. Margarete Petersen Tarot 3. Ananda Tarot 4. Black Tarot (by Luis Royo) 5. Hello Tarot 6. Golden Tarot (by Kat Black) 7. Madame Endora's Fortune Cards 8. Mountain Dream Tarot 9. Tarot of Prague 10. Rock-and-Roll Tarot (by Chris Paradis) 11. Masonic Tarot (by J. Beauchard) 12. Pagan 2000 Tarot 13. (Tie) Fey Tarot Kit 13. (Tie) Arcus Arcanum Tarot 15. Le Tarot Ambre 16. Tarot Erotica (by LoriWalls) 17 Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot 18. (Tie) Das Baum Tarot 18. (Tie) Tarot of the New Vision 20. (Tie) Mermaids 20. (Tie) il Tarocco delle Vetrate If you lump all the RW "recolored" decks in with the standard RW deck, and count all sizes and different language editions, the combined sales would place Waite & Smith in position 7 on our list. But as you can see, the only RW "variant" with high enough sales by itself to make our "top 20" was the Radiant Rider-Waite, at position #17. (Unless you also want to count the Tarot of the New Vision at position #18.) Our sales of the Ananda and Petersen decks are probably also a bit skewed by the fact that we sold a large number of the German edition on this side of the Atlantic before the publishers decided to release English-language editions of these decks. Then we offered a deep-discount "upgrade" deal to those customers who already bought the German editions from us and wanted to get ahold of these titles in English. So we had a lot of customers buy these titles twice. Even so, by my rough estimate, eliminating the "double-purchases" would only bump the Black Tarot up to the second position, and the Petersen and Ananda down to 3 and 4 repsectively. As a matter of interest: sales of the top five titles on my list are so far above everything else that I could probably stop selling them for six months and the titles underneath would still fail to bump any of them from their positions. (Although if sales of Kat's deck keep up at their current pace, the Golden Tarot might be the one to have a shot at doing it; see next paragraph.) I think that it's quite impressive that Kat's Golden Tarot only hit the shelves this past March, and yet only about two months later, the deck has zoomed up to #6 on our all-time bestseller list. Aeclectic forums participants may also take pride in noting that Karen & Alex's "Tarot of Prague" made the top 10. The fact that the Hello Tarot made position #5 tells me that I might be making a lot more money if I were selling "Hello Kitty" collectibles instead of tarots. ;) (Just kidding! Well, maybe not -- but I don't think I could stand that much tiny cuteness 24/7.) heheheehe I can't stand that much cuteness for 5 minutes........ MIMERS!!! WHAT an incredible job!!! I work with numbers every day too but could not even imagine compiling all of that! Fabulous resource and one I am sure is destined to become a "shopping list" for many here! May I ask what you use to keep up with all that? Excel, Access, some inventory software, magic powers, alien technology? Inquring minds want to know.......... :CL

Mimers its cool, however beware: the numbers unfortunately cannot be accurate, because You have the same decks listed under several different names. One small example: the majors only Tarocchi delle Fiabe is listed under - delle Fiabe - Tarocchi delle Fiabe - I Tarocchi delle Fiabe - I Tarocchi delle Fiabe (Majors) (there is no version with minors) - so that makes four times the same deck. Sorry. :(

Jeanette, That is really cool information! I did lump all of the RW color variations together, which does sku the numbers for the top 3 decks a bit. I think the percentages speak a lot, though with most people owning at least one RWS deck. Thanks for adding that! Amy

I think this is the blue moon tarot: http://www.newmoontradingco.com/trading/bluemoon/bluemoon.htm It is a majors only based on the moon cycles. In the next tally there may be more copies - it was out of print and has just been reprinted :)

Sorry. :( Yes, I noticed that with some others... As a profession I am a number cruncher who sorts out problems in data tables (finding duplicates, misnaming, etc.). Sad that I do it when off work still! However, it is monumental and I raise a glass of cheer to Mimers! Hip Hip Hooray.
