Hi Everybody! ~lark waves~

If you were being locked into a high school overnight with the graduating class of 2004.......
To read tarot none stop untill the crack of dawn....
What tarot decks would you bring?
Also any other advice would be very welcome. :)

P.S. This is really happening to me.
My tarot deck list is on the last page of the tarot deck list thread.

Mimers  04 May 2004
My suggestions would be, Halloween, Nigel Jackson and Vision Quest.

Halloween would be lots of fun, and the NJ and VQ are beautiful and should not offend anyone.

Mimi

PS. have fun! better you than me!!!!! LOL

hyatt  04 May 2004
Oh lark! As a high school art teacher I deem you insane! WOW! I think this will be FUN but a little crazy. The deck I thought of right off hand is the Diamond deck - the deck that is "trippy" but the same as RW. But, I don't think you have that. I guess I would go for the basics take your Universal and I think they would enjoy the Wonderland deck. It is playful and similiar to their crazy trip through high school, going from small to large - their bodies changing rapidly!
Oh I wish you the best of luck! I am taking 7 students to Europe for a few weeks so I guess I am crazy too! The best advice I can give you is to take your sense of humor. You know they will want to make jokes about your cards. You might want to not take ones with nudity because that will make the jokes come out faster. Also it might be cute to give couples relationship readings. ENJOY!

Sulis  05 May 2004
I'd go for:

Morgan Greer (well I would, wouldn't I?)
World Spirit _ nice and multicultural - fat people, thin people, blue people.
Universal Waite _ familiar to lots of folk but nicer colouring
Robin Wood _ because I seem to recall that you like it
A photo style deck such as Golden tarot or Tarot of Prague.

Love

Sulis xx

Alta  05 May 2004
I would suggest one or two offbeat, fun decks with some interesting pics.. as long as they are decks that you can read from. And a ghouly one for the boys, what the heck. And at least one you absolutely always get good readings from!

jmd  05 May 2004
Insaner than insane, I say!!!!

But to be serious, I would bring only ONE deck... whichever you feel the most comfortable with... or...

how about Waking the Wild Spirit deck?

Bean Feasa  05 May 2004
How about Secret Tarots by Nizzoli, Lark? Or the Fantastical.
I'd imagine they'd go down well with that age group.
Whatever deck you bring, hope you enjoy the experience! :)

Ravenswing  05 May 2004
Lark--

A few I'd pick from your list...

First, I would go for the miniture Rider. Traditional, and its size will allow for larger spreads in small spaces. I think once you start you'll get a real crowd...

Second, the Lovers Tarot. I had this one for a bit, and if I remember rightly, it's pretty light. And I think you'll get lot of relationship questions.

Third, either Halloween or Whimsical-- though the Whimsical may be too 'childish' :)

I wouldn't take the Robin Wood. I think it possible that someone's evening might be ruined if they got the Lovers in a reading. Kids can be real cruel. Something I remember well... })

I'm VERY curious here :D Could you PLEASE let us know what you finally decide on? And how the evening went...

fly well

Ravenswing  05 May 2004
...I forgot.

Bring the Tao Oracle too. It's beautiful and a simple one card throw or a two card transition works well...

Have fun
Raven

ros  05 May 2004
If I was you I would take One Easy Deck.
Have Fun!!!

crystal cove  05 May 2004
I'd choose a deck with no cards that could be intrepreted as offensive and I'd only use one deck. Crowds tend to form at the activities tables at these events and there is a good chance that cards or decks could disappear. Most teens are pretty cool, but there are always a few.

Imagemaker  05 May 2004
I wouldn't take the Robin Wood--I love it, but not with a crowd of teenage jokers.

I didn't look at your list, but the Inner Child deck with fairy tales would be fun.

Round about 3 am you may want to have them do the readings--your eyes will be whirling! Good luck!

lark  05 May 2004
Wow thanks for all the ideas!
I know I'm crazy and insane...:)
There are three readers going to this lock in.
It's my first time but the other two have been doing it for a couple of years.
So they have a few tricks and tips to tell me.
We're going out to dinner before we get locked in to talk about it.
The money is excellent and it's sponsored and paid for by the high school!
Amazing Hey!

One of the other readers is only taking one deck his Universal Waite.
I would like to take my Robin Wood but the crooked banana issue is nicksing that choice.

Alot of you have suggested just taking one deck that I'm really familar with.
Good advice.
twenty-one I never though about having the extra decks looked through and possibly walked off with as I'm busy reading for others.
good heads up...

I'm going to take out and look through some of your suggestions today and narrow it down.
I'm very partial to my Morgan Greer.
It makes quite an impression on my black velvet spread cloth...

jmd~ Waking the Wild Spirit interesting idea...
A very intuitive deck for me.

Ravenswing, Mimers I love my Halloween deck!
I've used it before at other events and it's always a big hit.
Also never thought of Nigel Jackson!
My pocket RWS and Hanson Roberts are always in my purse so those can be my back up.

And I will let you all know what I chose and how it goes.
It's the first Friday of June.

Marion~I've been wanting to get a darker deck so I'm going to investigate those today, while I have time to get something ordered.

Thanks again it was so fun to read your ideas!

Oh, I was also thinking my Soul Cards might be nice for quick readings. Or additional insights.
The Oho Zen and the Tao too.
So many decks to chose from......
No wonder I got the 7 of cups in my daily draw this morning. :D

raeanne  05 May 2004
Hi Lark,
I would strongly suggest that you take lots of bottled water with you! Please keep a close watch on your physical health. If you are going to be doing readings for hours on end, without proper care, you could get depleted very easily and spend the next several days sick in bed. Drinking lots of water and taking breaks to rest will help. Also, remember to imagine yourself surrounded by a protective white light! Have a good time but don't let anyone push you beyond your limit.

Thank you raeanne I will be careful.
I'm taking my rescue remedy with me.
And a special Bach Flower Remedy mix in my water bottles.
And a loooooong nap Friday afternoon.

diane drizzy  05 May 2004
How about Tarot of the Cloisters, since your being cloistered?
Couldn't resist :D

Tarot Sparrow  05 May 2004
The Fey seems to be the most crowd pleasing. That would be my first choice.

Ravenswing  05 May 2004
Lark--

A follow up on Raeanne's suggestion. I'm sure we could all send you a bit of light that night. I've done similar energy boosts for people when needed.

And we're a rather large base....

I'll be thinking of you that night-- it's June 4th.

sunflowr  05 May 2004
a perfect deck would be Cosmic Tribe!!! ;D Just kidding, btw. I dont want to be responsible for the evening should you actually bring that deck along. ;) I would suggest Raidant Rider Waite (the bright colors would be attractive), Nigel Jackson, or Hanson Roberts. The Quest Tarot might also be a good deck too, and fun to read because of all the different ways to read it.

sunflowr  05 May 2004
P.S: this seems fun! I wish I were going to this school that has something like this! :) Good Luck!

bluediva  05 May 2004
What about your Osho-Zen deck? Lots of positive and introspective ideas to please self-absorbed teens. (Hey, it's a healthy part of being that age.) Plus the art is beautiful and sophisticated, probably very inviting to young folk who are not very familiar with tarot, or who only know silly stereotypes about tarot readings.

Just my humble 2 cents. I'm guessing that the spirit of this event is to give these grads a chance to contemplate their future and what the plan to do in life? Anyway, it sounds like an interesting night. Have fun!

Awww thank you! That's such a sweet thought!
Yes, I can use all the good light and energy boost anyone wants to send me Fri. June 4th.
I hope I don't fall asleep on top of my cards in the middle of a reading. lol

ncefafn  06 May 2004
I second DeadStar's suggestion for the Fey Tarot. Not only is it user friendly, but I think teens would really respond to the anime style artwork.

*Cough cough* I did something similar to this once... And took my Cosmic Tribe. *Cough cough* But I found that if you take a deck like the Cosmic Tribe, the kids have fun. You have to be tough though, and very aloof, prepared to 'beat down' anybody who becomes mean about it. I mean beat down with words, or a look. }) I used to read exclusively for high school (well, the English equivalent of) students, so I got fairly good at this. })

I think that the banana-willy in the Robin Wood is harmless. If people joke about it, you can have a laugh. Who said a Tarot reading (especially one for teenagers) had to be serious? It's an ice-breaker at least. ;)

But the Whimsical gets my vote. You'll be surprised how attentive teenagers will get when you start re-telling them the nursery tales they heard as kids. And they all know them, oh yes. They'll love the deck.

As for advice: have fun, don't be too serious, drink lots (of water), take lots of chocolate and something starchy (e.g. crisps, sandwiches) to eat, and look your best. When you look your best, you feel as though you can take on the world (and even a bunch of rowdy teenagers!) Oh, and pretend you're a teenager too, and you're talking to your peers. They'll listen to you more that way, and you'll find it a lot easier to talk to them.

Blessings,

Kiama

dolphingirl  07 May 2004
Wow I would love to do this, it sounds like soooo much fun!

My decks for this would be

Hanson Roberts- Very Rider Waite and no one will get offended. You can get the pocket version with book for only $ 7.95 so no worries about looking or hurting this deck with all the people around. Also it is nice and small to shuffle for people with small hands.

The Fradella Adventure deck- I really love this deck and it has ALOT more depth than people give it credit for. Plus if you want a deck that the guys won't mind getting a reading from this deck is great!

The Fey deck- everyone that see's this deck loves it. The artwork is also great for storytelling.

Well I would also want to sneak in my self care cards. I just love using these to pull one card at the end of a reading. They have wonderful artwork, nice positive sayings on the back and are not religious at all.

I would also bring plenty of snacks for yourself and maybe some blank layout pages so that people can write down the cards you pull for their readings and refer to them later. Who knows you may get some budding tarot people out of the bunch :)

lark  07 May 2004
Thanks for all the new ideas.
One of the other readers has the Fradella and was talking about bringing it because it would be good for the guys.
Fey is a good choice.
Very deep yet doesn't appear that way.

Still haven't decided, but I'm having alot of fun rummaging through my decks.

When something like this comes along it gives you a nice excuse to spread everything you've got out and really look at it.

I'm finding some diamonds I've neglected.

Like the Juliet Sharman- Burke deck.
The backs are that ugly magenta color but what a fresh new look at the RWS deck.
It has one of the best Hermit cards.

punchinella  07 May 2004
I second bluediva's vote for the Osho Zen. As soon as I read her post, the marrow in my bones said 'yes!' It's serious, & yet light at the same time. The artwork would appeal to teens. Taking this deck would be the equivalent (for me) of saying to myself "yes I'm here to have a good time with these kids, but I'm also aware that this is a significant turning point in their lives . . . " If that makes any sense . . . :)

On the other hand, do you have an Arcus Arcanum deck??? (for the guys? :D )

I like this suggestion. Selecting decks that would appeal to teenaged boys is an interesting proposal. Hmmm. Tarot of Prague? Aquarian?

I really like the Fey deck, but I just thought of something - the name and "fairy" connotation might (unfortunately) make a few kids smirk and giggle for stupid reasons. It's senseless and immature, but maybe something to consider. Sorry, but I thought I'd mention it. If silly reactions to pictures of tastefully naked people are a consideration, then maybe immature homophobic wisecracking should also be considered. But I sincerely hope this is not an issue you encounter. If it were me, I'd bring the Fey deck (to heck with loosers, it's a great deck) and have a snide wisecrack of my own ready for anyone who diminished the integrity of my reading with stupid comments! :-)

TemperanceAngel  09 May 2004
I personally think you should go for one deck too! And one Oracle Deck as well...

Sounds like fun...take care...XTAX

lark  17 Jul 2004
Well I can't belive I forgot to get back to this thread.

I took my Robin Wood and very glad I did!
I was reading by the light of one small candle.
And the images being so familiar to me in that light was a blessing.
Three other readers came with.
One used Cosmic
One Healing with the Angels
And one Tarot Nova.
They had set up a gypsy tent for us and it was beautiful with twinkling lights all over inside the ceiling.
We each had our own table and could decorate it any way we wanted.
They even had black table cloths on each table with little gold and silver star confetti all over it.

They treated us like kings if we need anything all we had to do was ask.
The adults asked if we could do some readings for them before they let the herd of kids in.
And we were happy to do that for them.

Then the gates were open and in they swarmed.
For 5 straight hours we did one reading after another.
I had one 10 minute break.
It was a fantastic experience.
I found that instead of getting tired and less acurate my intuition go more acute as time went on.
I didn't feel tired untill I got home and then it really hit me.

The kids were absolutely WONDERFUL!!!
Not a nay sayer in the bunch.
Polite and curious.
No one over stayed there time or made negative comments.
I had some very intense questions though.
But my Robin Wood did not let me down.

At the end of our session they brought us each an envelope with our check and asked us back next year.
All in all it was a most happy and wonderful experience.
I'll be going again next year.

Kittaine  18 Jul 2004
Lark, that sounds absolutely wonderful! Someday, when I become more experienced, I'd like to try that!

Wow! :O Congratulations on your success!

Nevada  18 Jul 2004
What a fun event. I still think you're brave to do it. :)
