I can't wait for the Tarot of Atlantis! Ever since I saw it in the Lo Scarabeo catalog I wanted it. It's such a long time time until December but on the other hand, my wishlist is long enough! :)

Liber T will go straight into my shopping basket for sure.
And, well, I am not gay - but the Gay tarot is on the wishlist too.
I have quite a few gay friends and some of them are even into tarot:-) so I will get this one and perhaps a few extra to give away too.

Since folks here are checking out our preorders info, I should probably note that some of the release dates (such as December for the Tarot of Atlantis) may actually be inaccurate on the high side, for a change. Lo Scarabeo is issuing confirmations about the third- and fourth-quarter releases that put them here anywhere from 1 - 3 months earlier than stated on our "Upcoming Releases" page. But when we make our announcements, we have to go with what the North American distributor (Llewellyn, in this case) tells us. And Llewellyn's "official" release dates are running later than Lo Scarabeo's estimates.
As such, I recommend that folks get their preorders for the Lo Scarabeo titles submitted as early as possible, because if we get them earlier, we'll just be sending them out earlier. And if I mis-anticipate the number of preorders that come in after the actual product arrives but before the announced preorder cutoff date, there's a slight chance that we may actually end up not having quite enough to go around. Although I'm certainly working hard to avoid that situation!

I have just ordered this new deck. I guess it is not possible to see many images of it yet as only a few are available.
The ones I have seen are quite impressive. I also like the theme of this deck. The predominant colors are my favorites as well.

I think it was very canny of Llewellyn to repackage and rename The Nigel Jackson Tarot. I bet they sell quite a few in this incarnation.
That Golden Tarot of the Renaissance/Estensi Tarot looks kind of yummy.

Arrgh! Revival of this thread just reminded me that I hadn't posted the new info on the forthcoming US Games releases for the fourth quarter 2004. The info just went up now, if anyone is interested in what USG is up to these days.

P.S. -- The target release dates for these decks are just that: targets. Those of you who've been members on this forum for a while will recall what happened regarding the "target" release date of Kat's Golden Tarot...

We ship worldwide, and accept all form of payment. For your average single deck-without-full-size-book, I can always pop it into a Global Priority envelope and ship for US$ 5 (except to Italy; I don't know why the USPS won't let me send Global Priority to Italy). The envelope isn't the sturdiest container around, but we individually bubble-wrap all decks we ship, and on the rare occasions when there's been damage in transit, it's been to the outer box and not the cards themselves. But admittedly there is a slight risk, so if pristine boxes are important to you, I guess I wouldn't recommend Global Priority shipment. "Standard" airmail from the U.S. to Europe for your average deck runs around US$ 8 - 9.
Just some additional information, for what it's worth.

I could be wrong.. I've definitely been so before.. but I just have this feeling that the Forest Folklore will be THE deck for me :D ..
I have amazingly high hopes for it and the New Lisa Hunt animal deck coming in 2005. Between the two, I could possibly find myself completely content !

Jeannette, thanks for the info.
The main "risk" for me though is that the customs like to open packages from the US and add taxes and a special "fee" for sending me the bill and a tax on the fee too. All in all that is often more than the item inside would cost on it's own. They don't always do it, but often enough that I learnt to only order within the EC.
I once had to pay $18.00 for a package containing a birthday present from a friend. I wish the customs would spend more on finding drugs instead of tarot decks and books...

Oh no!
Apart from the two decks I've already pre-ordered, I also want the Celestial, the Lover's Path (I'd forgotten about that one!), quite probably the Forest Folklore (I'd never heard about that one, but it looks really interesting!) and the Medieval Cat (where did that one come from all of a sudden?).........
And I'm mighty interested in the Atlantis, the Native American and the Gay, as well!
Ok, so now I need to find a new job I guess - one where I make lots of money, but don't actually have to do any work, so I can use all these decks.... ;)

Ah, yes... those fine folks at Customs. I do sympathize; U.S. Customs is terribly liberal by comparison. I'm never sure which EU countries get hit hard by their Customs regulations, and I've even had customers who, like you, tell me that their packages are taxed heavily on one occasion, and not even bothered with on the next. We do what we can (legally) do to keep Customs duties to a minimum, but the rules are often contradictory, and seem to be applied purely on the whims of the inspectors on any given day, that it is admittedly difficult to know what to expect.

Hedera,
Your post brings up a couple of interesting points that visitors to this thread might want to be aware of:
1) The Forest Folklore Tarot was commissioned by U.S. Games after they had received endless requests for the "deck" from which the illustrations for their line of scratch-off greeting cards had been taken. In fact, no such deck existed; only the twelve greeting card illustrations had been executed (apparently for just that purpose). But eventually, USG decided it was a project pursuing, so -- thus the fully-illustrated Forest Folklore Tarot was born. This information came to me from Janet Bennett at USG approximately three weeks ago (as of this writing). I'm pretty sure that I have a set of the greeting cards around here... I should probably get some scans made...
2) The Medieval Cats Tarot was actually completed a couple of years ago. The artist had wanted to call it the Felisis Arca Tarot -- a name I personally much prefer to "Medieval Cats." But I suppose for marketing purposes to the general public, the less "florid" name was probably a good decision. As of this writing, samples of the deck may still be listed in the Tarot Garden database under the "Felisis Arca" title -- and if they are, I should probably change it. The scans and information about the original title came to us directly from Lawrence Teng, the deck's creator.
3) According to another thread in these forums, the Tarot of Atlantis has already been released in Europe. This means that despite the North American distributor's stated release date of December on this side of the Atlantic, it looks as if the deck could actually reach this market as early as September. If that's the case, anyone who wants to preorder the deck from us should get their order in ASAP, because if and when I confirm that the deck is on its way over here, I'll have to adjust the info on our preorders page and move up the preorder cutoff date accordingly. I'd recommend that anyone who wants this deck but hasn't already submitted their preorder should try to get it to us by 15 August 2004.
As has been said so many times before on these forums: so many decks, so little time...

It's the same in Canada. You get the administrative fee and the Goods and Services Tax and I've had them add Provincial Sales Tax for some strange reason on a gift I recieved. Being a gift it should have had nothing added, but someone arbitrarily decided after opening it that it wasn't a gift.
It's completely random as you say Jeannette but I've noticed that they seem to target larger packages.
I didn't realize that this happened in the EU countries too. Global equity in bureaucracy, aren't we lucky?
Yes, where DID this Medieval Cat deck come from all of a sudden. . . .

Actually, there's been a Gummy Bears Tarot for quite some time. The original edition was published in 2001, by a small company in Germany. It included the cards (appropriately miniature sized), an explanatory book (in German), and... a little package of Gummibear candies. Cute.
The later German editions eliminated the candy packet and the box, and consisted of the cards shrinkwrapped to the book.
I don't know for sure how the English edition will be packaged, but my contacts at USG have told me that no candy packet is included. Given what I know of USG typical price structure, I also expect that the full-size book has been eliminated in favor of just a LWB. The card size seems to be roughly equivalent to that of the German editions.

LOL! Sorry -- it doesn't seem sudden to me, but I've been in periodic contact with the artist about it for almost two years. :)
However, upon checking, I do see that we have it listed in our database under the name "Medieval Cat Tarot" now... although a Deck QuickSearch on "Felisis Arca" will bring it up as well. For anyone who wants to see the sample scans the artist sent to us oh-so-long-ago, here's the link:

Sorry, not much. About all I can tell you is that he's living in Canada (whether he was born and raised there, I don't know). Based on my email correspondence with him, about all I can add is that he's just awfully nice and friendly. :D
If, by "the deck has been around for so long," you mean that its seen some form of publication, the response is that it hasn't. The USG edition will be the first. I don't know how long it took him to complete work on 78 cards, but USG accepted it for publication sometime last year. And it's not uncommon for these things to take a year or more to see actual print, once the ink has dried on the appropriate paperwork.

I have this edition. I bought it because I, too, thought it was cute, but it really just is a RWS clone with most of the symbolic cues missing and gummy bears instead of people - with no facial expressions at all. To me, it looks as if the artist didn't care too much about tarot, but just wanted a cool follow-up to the gummy bear oracle from the same author (you draw five gummy bear candies from a packet and the oracle (book) tells you your character and/or future. A party game). The gummy bear tarot might be nice for people who are interested in tarot but haven't decided yet if they really want to "believe" in it - it is cute enough for an easy way out, and will make a nice game for next New Years' Eve in any case.
The book tells an "alternative" history of tarot - it was invented by gummy bears and given to humans back when those two peoples were still living together in peace. Divinatory meanings in the book are close to the traditional meanings given elsewhere, but no further background on the cards is given. If you know your RWS by heart you can probably actually use the gummy bear tarot by remembering the original images, but don't expect to find any details on the gummy bear cards.
The cards are a little smaller than the pocket Rider-Waite edition. I'll keep them as a collector's item (and yes, they are cute) , but to me they really seem to scream "don't use me for serious reading, I'm just a bad joke on tarot".
Others' opinions will vary, of course. ;-)
cheers,
Sonja

I emailed my pre-order, when I read the beginning of the thread. I am thrilled that we have Tarot Garden as a place to relieve our Tarotholic needs. Tarot Garden had August's releases before Amazon or other bookstores. I sense that some decks may be sold out quickly. I am excited by several decks. I especially like the Forest Folklore Tarot, The Gilded Tarot, The Tarot of the Dead, and the Tarot of Atlantis. The Royal Thai Tarot really intrigues me. Thanks Jeannine for keeping us informed.--Tao

Hard to say. The target release timeframe is September, so of course, that could be anytime from the 1st to the 30th. However, this is one of Llewellyn's "in house" publications, and it's not uncommon for them to actually have the stuff ready and out to the dealers a few weeks early. So is there a chance we could have your copy to you by September 1st? Yeah, I'd say there's a chance. I just don't know how much of a chance at this point.
Happy Birthday (in advance)!

Some of these decks may sell out rapidly. Sometimes the fast selling was not anticipated by the publisher. I have a strong feeling that the Tarot of the Dead and the Gilded Tarot may have this happen to them. If you really think you will want an upcoming release then I would suggest to take advantage of the discount and pre-order. This allows a vendor to anticipate the initial demand.--Tao

I know someone who worked with him in Quebec. He's apparently an animator / graphic designer of some sort with an odd double background in Biology and Art (talk about extremes). I don't know if he's orginally from Quebec or if he's one of those "imported" employees. The tarot card (Felisis) was actually a part of some big art history project that started in the late 90's. So the deck has been around very long it seems. I suppose he never thought of having it published. I have visited Wicce's site who used to post some pics of the work but it has not been updated and the link does not work anymore. The pictures that I saw on Tarot Garden where not the same versions that was orginally posted at Wicce's site. I suppose it is only natural to expect changes when one works on a project that long.
Perhaps Tarot Garden can do an interview with him. If he's really friendly and nice I'm sure he wouldn't mind telling us more about himself or about The Medieval Cat Tarot.

Tarots. We took my nephews there for a very belated birthday, grad and early Xmas gifts....
If you search on borders.com, it's actually an Amazon.com search engine. You can find out if there's a Borders store in your area with Gilded in stock.
Good hunting!

Actually, I just got a message from Lawrence the other day. He said that as far as he knew, USG was on track for an October release of the MCT. He also commented that he felt that the detail didn't suffer too much in the reducing of the original illustrations to card size. Which is always good to hear.
And he is really friendly and nice. Really. :D
Interview... hmmmm. Umbrae, darling -- are you listening? ;)

I have been interested and obsessing about this deck for a long time now since it was shown at Wicce's site, then at Tarot Garden as Felisis. (It was also becuase of looking for updates on this deck that I found this awesome tarot forum).
Anyway I asked for my coworker for the artist's email and emailed the artist himself. I was wrong about one tiny detail. I asked him about the origin of the deck and he said it started from a card he made as a gift for Wicce, the project was expanded and used for his art thesis as well. I wanted to see more cards but he has not set up any visuals. However, he's nice enough (Jeanette is right about it) to show me what's left of his original proposal for USGames. It's majors only and they are kind of smallish :(. I was expecting something a bit more cutesy but this is still good.

Here's a few updates on the Llewellyn and USG releases:
The Tarot of the Dead and the Medieval Enchantment decks arrived here yesterday. I know several of you have already acknowledged the broadcast email and have sent or approved payment. I think I should be able to get those orders out today.
Anyone who ordered either or both of the above titles from us, but didn't receive the broadcast email with the shipping costs and payment instructions, please PM me right away, so I can get the info to you.
As for USG: in my last contact with Bobbie Bensaid, I was told that there are no delays currently anticipated for any of their 4th quarter releases. Bobbie wasn't able to give me exact release dates, of course -- but she indicated that so far, everything seems to be on track for their decks to be ready to go sometime within the month for which each title was announced.

I asked him again and here's a portion of a reply to my email:
"...they (USGames) did not change my art too much. There were only some rescaling for printing specifics, aside from that everything else was left intact. As for release dates, I assume that it is very near. I was told around October. I did update Jeanette at Tarot Garden as soon as I got the news, perhaps you should go check with her. She may know more about the latest news on Felisis (or any decks for that matter). "
So I assume it's going smoothly....can't wait.
