About a week ago we were making the rounds to a couple of used book stores and I found this Thoth deck in a tarot box that I had never seen before.
The box is white and made of a heavy cardboard and the lid slided off the top and leaves you with a standing gold box (kind of like the Golden Tarot's box) that holds a large sized Thoth tarot deck. Does anyone have a clue as to how old this is or any info?
I posted pics of it here http://groups.msn.com/DolphinDaze/deckdiscussion.msnw?action=get_message&mview=1&ID_Message=660
Thanks for any help
Samantha

dolphingirl--
My first wife had a box like that one on her Thoth deck. That was a good twenty-five or thirty years ago. So you might be going back quite a ways...

when he talks about his first Thoth bought in the 1970s. He describes the publisher as Llewellyn and talks about the slipcase.
He writes it up in at least one of his books, it may be in his Crowley Thoth book.
Enjoy your good find!

I purchased this one on Ebay a few months back, and posted a thread here asking about the edition it was. I think we came to the conclusion it was either First ed. or somewhere pretty close.

I saw a deck like this at a friend's house. She told me that it was a special edition. She said that she bought it in a little bookshop in NYC during the 70's. It was impressive!--Tao

I also recently acquired this version of the Crowley/Harris Thoth deck on eBay (inspired by Kiama's post). Per Kaplan's Encyclopedia of Tarot vol. III, this gold slipcase boxed version of the Thoth deck was printed in 1969. It appears to be the first full-color version of the deck that was printed, and the second edition ever printed.
The first edition of the Thoth deck was a limited edition of about 250 decks, printed in the early 1960's. It is also known as the Sangreal One-Color Tarot, as it was printed in blue inks on the front and red ink on the backs, with the illustrations taken from photographs from Crowley's Book of Thoth.
The cards from the gold slipcase 1969 edition have a plain border on the fronts, not like the patterned border on subsequent editions. The colors and images on the 1969 edition are a bit diluted and fuzzy on some cards, but nonetheless this edition is one of the prizes in my collection because of its packaging and significance.

Wow thank you all for the info on my Thoth deck. I really debated on buying it cause it was $20 at the used bookstore (not exactly cheap) but it was in such good shape and the box was so neat I just couldn't resist. It is also really fun to find out that it was done in 1969 (the year I was born).
Both the box and cards are in super shape and I will have to take them out and use them for special occasions.
I hope that with the new decks comming out with a similar box (golden tarot, pocket universal Waite) that more of the tarot compainies will move back to this kind of packaging.
