I thought I would open a new thread on this deck due to the fact that I haven't noticed any recent ramblings about it. Anyway...
I was lucky enough to receive this deck in a trade, and I absolutely love it. There is something about the imagery which I find to be intensely engaging and deep. I just thought I would seek other opinions on this fantastic deck. I have been using it frequently since I obtained it! I love the artist's style and mode of expression.
Some of the images on the Spiral can be found here. However, I bet that most of you are already familiar with it anyway! :)

I love this deck for its clear answers to spiritual questions. Didn't know it needed resurrecting :) but then, don't we all in some way?

I find that too with this deck. It seems to provide very clear answers. I actually considering buying it around a year ago, and I once stopped a street-reader and asked if I could have a look at his cards, but I resisted the temptation to actually purchase it. I am so glad that I managed to obtain it in trade!

A coinsidence!!
Two days ago I went back to the Spiral (my first deck - and not used in a long time)
I have changed my reading decks and this is one of them - then I see your thread.
It's always a good old favourite, and even now I picture the Spiral cards above any other when I get a new deck that I am trying t get to grips with.

I just can't believe that I managed to let this one slip me by... as I said, I am very happy to have obtained it in trade a month or so ago.
What do you think of the people in the deck? I love the way that they are depicted...
And the Devil card is amazing. Frightening!!! :)

There are a lot of what I sometimes call "poster-cards" in this deck. That is cards that somehow symbolize the essence of that card so when I see someone writing about 3 of pentacles the flash i get right away is of the ballerina performing on the stage.
6 of cups, 7 of cups, the hierophant, so many wonderful cards...

There have been some that don't like the minors too much in this deck - but I do :D
I 'get' where Kay Stevenson was coming from when she says that she decided on that period (1800's) because of her grandmother - who first taught her Tarot.
To me it's a great gesture and makes the deck very special and personal.
Yes - great Devil...
And jema - I get that 3 of pents picture too - whichever deck I pick up

The Spiral was one of the first decks I really connected with, apart from the Rider Waite. Everything about this deck is apealing, the purple colours (my favourite colours) and the size. I can remember thinking that I'd never had such a pretty deck before - The Empress and High Priestess were some of my favourite cards, the Hermit is a woman and the hierophant is Cheron - I liked decks at that time that didn't show the Hierophant as a traditional priest.
I found that the Minors followed Rider Waite close enough to be easily read but to give a different slant to the readings.
I loved my Spiral but must have outgrown it because one day I picked it up and got nothing, complete readers block and the connection never came back. I can look at the cards now and can read them but not like I could. This deck was like a friend giving advice. It is still a lovely deck though.

Me too. I totally understand why she is using that period. I think that it blends perfectly well. Out of interest, does anyone have the book that comes with this deck? And if so, what are your thoughts on it?

I like the book, of course you don't need it to read the deck because it is so easy to read with but the book gives in depth details of the Majors and the myths/stories behind them. It also points out some of the symbols in the cards and touches on the Kabbalistic meanings.
Did you notice the tree of life in each Major with the sphere representing that Major highlighted?
This deck is packed with symbols and I certainly learnt alot from it when I started out. I am now rediscovering the deck.

Hmmm....I did not realize there was a BOOK Moonbow*...thanks a LOT!!! :P hehehehe
Well, thanks to Centaur's idea to "resurrect" the Spiral, I acyually pulled mine out of its box....sadly after letting it sit untouched for the last four months??? :( Don't get me wrong....I bought the Spiral after MONTHS of admiring its lovely artwork, and I did look through it a couple of times when I first bought it. But, as many of you may relate to, one deck led to another and another....and this little beauty somehow got left behind.
TODAY was the day I dusted her off and spent some time, shuffling and bonding, peeking at the colorful images as they passed through my fingertips....there was an immediate connection!!! :D
I pulled my daily card: Three of Cups....one of my favorite cards!
The Spiral version is particularly special to me...the three women are dancing and toasting, similarly as seen in the RWS deck....but in this case, they are celebrating the autumn harvest, and there are lovely pumpkins and berries at their feet!!! This made the card perfect in my eyes...because autumn/fall is by far my favorite time of year!!! I think it popped out today for a reason....very glad to have made her acquaintance....

I never thought the Spiral needed ressurection.
The Spiral is my everyday deck. I keep in the Crown Royal bag I got from a dear friend here on Aeclectic. I carry it in my bag and take it with me everywhere I go. It's the deck I use to read for myself and others.
I will continue to use the Spiral until I actually finish one of my own decks.
Can you tell I love it?

Oh yes, the Spiral is one of my favorite decks. It's got a lot of purple (my favorite color) and it's easy to shuffle. I find the images are better read intuitively than with memorized meanings.
I've gotten some amazing readings from this deck. I should spend more time with it, but there are so many wonderful decks, and so little time.
The artist, Kay Steventon, has a new deck that is supposed to come out this month according to Amazon. It's called the Celestial Tarot, and I pre-ordered it sight unseen from Amazon just because I like the Spiral so much.

I agree....the Celestial should be beautiful when it comes out!!! :)
However....I would not put a whole lot of faith in amazon's release dates...nor would I count on them to hold your preorder if the publishing is delayed for some reason (and if it is US Games... be prepared for delays!)
Sorry, don't mean to sound negative here, but I have seen this happen time and again lately, where US Games has a 3-4 month delay in publishing a deck, and amazon ends up canceling the preorders....
Regardless, I will definitely be ordering the Celestial somehow, when it is released!!! :D

Don't worry, Luna, you don't sound negative, just realistic. I've also had a few "delayed" experiences with Amazon, but I was hoping they would get it right this time. Oh well, I guess I better not hold my breath....

So...yesterday I drew the 3 of Cups...and so I decided to pull another Spiral card for today! :)
The Knight of Swords is interesting....he definitely looks "restless" and eager to do battle!!! I love the colors in this card...a beautiful, celestial blue color to represent the Air element....swirls of movement surrounding the knight and his lovely blue horse. I am trying to read his facial expression: he does not look angry or frightened really...confident, brave...excited yet controlled at the same time. He does not seem to be an emotional man, more of a thinker, a strategist....
Now, I tend to struggle with reading court cards so....I consulted the LWB for some clues:
"The Knight of Swords sweeps into your life with the force of the wind. He is very intelligent, and as a lover, will charm you with his eloquence. He might leave you wondering what happened.
This card signifies a disruptive influence; you feel impatient, you want movement. Caution is needed before signing documents or delivering hasty words.
VERY interesting....sounds like I might be swept off my feet by a charming, knightly gentleman....OR that I need to not act in haste, practice patience.....LOL definitely can always use more patience! :P
Also interesting that my Osho Zen card for today is TRUST.
If I combine that concept with the idea of caution and patience, I am thinking this means that I should trust my instincts (of course) and by doing so, I will need to be patient with the part of me that is anxious for things to start happening. Let instinct override intellect today....GOT IT!!!

One of my heavy duty well loved and used decks.....
There's one card that really cracks me up....
The 5 of Cups.
The woman has a mustache and boy does she need her eyebrows plucked.
Everytime I see this card I think...
"Well, if she'd just turn around and look at the bright side it might include some electrolysis in her future."

I never noticed the size of the magician's feet (and we all know what big feet stand for, right?) LOL Or the 5 Cups hairiness, I thought she was sneering but now I'm really confused. :(

Interesting....another Knight today!!! Hmmmm??? ;)
The Knight of Cups is quite handsome, actually...he is wearing a long, red (or fuschia?) colored cape, and is holding a lovely, golden chalice in his hands. The chalice is encrusted with a large ruby-red stone, perhaps heart-shaped, and there is a bright light emanating from inside the cup. Does the cup contain material treasures??? A magickal potion??? Or...does it radiate the warmth and energy of love itself???
Lovely card, lovely knight...he is standing in the water while his horse drinks from it...behind him are two trees, symmetrically bending toward one another...for some reason this is making me think about romantic love being shared between two people. I just noticed the bullfrog in the foreground...and water lillies nearby. Does anyone understand the significance of the triangle near the top center of the card???
From the LWB:
He is the romantic knight on a quest, and has a dream of ideal love. Sometimes he is so caught in the dream that he lacks the initiative to complete his task. He is gentle, loving, sensitive, easily hurt and can be moody.
When the Knight of Cups appears in your life, he could signify a new romantic interest or idea. However, he could also indicate that you are about to enter a creative phase in your life.
Hmmm....interesting!!! :D
Anyone have other thoughts on this card???

Well, ever since the "hairy-lipped" 5 of Cups has been brought to my attention, I just couldn't stop thinking about it (and NOT liking it). So, I got out a marker and colored in her mouth with a tiny dot of pink, and now it looks more like the mustache is her upper lip and her mouth is opened. Or like she's been drinking chocolate milk - maybe that's why the 3 cups are toppled, because they only have white milk in them and she doesn't like white milk; only chocolate! It looks like something white flowing out of them! Oh, BTW, all of the men wearing boots have LARGE feet ;)

Yesterday I pulled the Knight of Swords for the second time in three days!!! I had a sneaking suspicion that he came up to represent the evil forces that caused the shutdown of the forum....;)
Today I pulled the Two of Cups....ah, love! :D
There is a couple toasting their union with two golden chalices....he is a tall bearded man dressed in formal (wedding?) attire, and his love is dressed in a beautiful blue gown. The background of the card is also a vibrant blue color...to me symbolizing the water suit, and emotional matters...
Above their heads is a yin-yang symbol....perhaps indicating that this couple is perfectly matched; complemenatry, in synch....meant to be together. They have united as one...
Beneath them are some lovely red and white flowers; red symbolizing passion, love and strength...white for purity and spiritual love. The butterflies remind me of a feeling of freedom and lightness, as their love takes flight....

OK...I must admit...it has been a LONG time since this card came up as my daily card. There was a time (a few months ago) that it would come up several times in a week!
This card shows a woman standing on the beach, surrounded by eight swords. She is blindfolded, hands and body bound together loosely with rope. The idea of this card, according to standard RWS definition, is that the person is in a self-imposed "prison"...able to escape but afraid or unwilling to do so.
Clearly in this card...I felt I could actually see the frustration on this woman's face! It looks to me like her jaw is clenched, and her hands are struggling to untie the rope....anyone else agree or disagree with this??? It is not a question of laziness or lack of desire on her part...she wants to be free of this anxiety, the prison in her mind...but cannot quite escape. It looks to me like she will, however...only a matter of time.

My daily card for 6/16: Four of Wands
Ooooh one of my favorite cards...interesting choice of card!
Another picture of a happy couple celebrating their union....
yesterday I pulled the 2 of Cups (and my OZ card for tomorrow is The Lovers!!! :D )
This card makes me think of stability, harmony, family relationships. There is a happy couple getting ready to start their new life together....I see optimism, hope and, of course, love.
I also think about the idea of openness...because of the outdoor setting. Perhaps this card signifies that open communication is important in this relationship....feeling supported equally by one another (symbolized by the four symmetrical wands supporting the flowered garlands above them).
A lovely card....combined with the Lovers, I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings....

I love the Spiral. It is one of my regular reading decks. Like so many others, I was immediately drawn to its period imagery -- so unusual, but still evocative.
Dang, that is a moustache on the five of cups! Never noticed it before ...
Here's something I did notice: the Fool gazes upon a chalice; is this the same chalice that's contained in the orb at the Emperor's feet? Is the orb the same as the one held by the angel depicted in the Lovers? And then there's the orb held by the Queen of Wands -- are those keys inside of it? I've never noticed that imagery associated with this queen before.
My favorite cards have to be the Wheel of Fortune (love it depicted as a spinning wheel), and the Devil -- that mirror does it for me.

LOL....funny you should mention the Queen of Wands, as she is my card for today!!! :)
I am also curious about the orb she is holding....is it some kind of crystal scrying ball??? It almost makes me think of a fishbowl...it looks like there is something moving inside it!!!
Does anyone have any thoughts on this???

In the Spiral book it says it is the "ouroboros" (symbol of time and the continuity of life.)
Inside the orb is a salamander biting it's tail.
Salamanders are a symbol of fire, and fire is associated in this deck with the Wands cards.
"Pictures from the Heart" has a long write up on the ouroboros.
It even mentions the orb held by the Queen of Wands in the Spiral deck.
In the RWS deck all the Wands court have salamanders except the Queen.
But in the Spiral deck our Queen finally gets her salamander too!

Welcome Sillanza!
You're right the two chalices are the same.
They are to represent the Holy Grail.
In the Fool card he looks at it longingly because it is the symbol of his quest in life.
He knows that if he attains it it will make him whole.
In the Emperor card the Grail is held within a sphere behind a veil.
The Emperor still can not attain it because you need to have a balance of intellect, conscious mind, and feeling.
The Emperor is so single minded that he is in danger of missing the object of his quest.
It's a warning not to be to rigid in our opinions or overbearing in our attitudes.
The angel in the Lovers card is supposed to be holding a pot of gold.
The pot of gold is a symbol for the meeting of opposites.
It is alchemicals gold, and represents wholeness and complete integration, like the act of sexual union.
This deck is so full of symbolism that you could go on and on all day about it.
The book really opens up the cards with the wonderful way she explains her choice of symbols.
Very well thought out.
I love the choices for the Devil and the Wheel card too.
Brings a new perspective to the cards for me.
And even more so after reading her meanings for all the symbols represented in those cards.
Here is one time when reading a book really helps.
Like the checker board floor in the Emperor card...
I would have just though it was a nice decorative art choice for the card.
But it represents the Celtic goddess of the land.
So it's saying " too much Emperor without a little goddess leads to arrogance and narrow thinking."
One of the reasons he can't have the Grail, he hasn't learned to balance the feminine with the masculine yet.
The Emperor card is just packed with symbols.
He's a card I've always had a problem with but this deck helps to clear him up for me.

If you have a magnifying glass (like every good taroholic should)
you can see it has four little feet.
The book is excellent.
Also look up salamanders in Pictures from the Heart.. thats facinating reading too.

Yes, every Major has the Tree of Life on it, and she ties it in very nicely in her book, how she sees it pertaining to that card.
Where that card fits on the Tree of Life.
I don't know a whole lot about the Kabbalah so I appreciate anything that explains it in simple terms that I can understand.

Yes... I agree that it is a really neat idea. I have an interesting book which has a section pertaining to tarot and the tree of life, therefore it is a good reference for me to use when looking at these cards. I notice that she also has some other information on the cards... letters and such-like? Are these Hebrew letters?

Yes, they're Hebrew letters.
For instance the Magician has the letter Beth, meaning house or temple, the dwelling place of the spirit decending into manifestation.

I really need to get into that kind of stuff. There just never seems to be enough time to fit it all in. Hehehe.
The book I was referring to is actually one devoted to the Thoth... Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot, by Lon Milo Duquette. There is a rather good chapter re. the Tree of Life. It is something that interests me a great deal. I think that it is very interesting to explore the various pathways and centers situated on the Tree of Life in relation to both the Minor and Major Arcana. Again, I never seem to have enough time to do it in any depth! LOL.

I have that book...but I haven't gotten to read it yet.
It's on my summer reading pile.
Humm good, another thing to help understand this deck better.
Like you said so much to get into and so little time.

This is very interesting....I also pulled the 10 of Cups from the OZ for tomorrow...sounds promising, LOL!!! :D
This is a very interesting card....so much detail, not sure where to begin! The Queen is apparently underwater, surrounded by fish, sea serpents and a pair of seahorse/fish hybrids. She is gazing at her jeweled chalice with a look of longing...is she seeing her own reflection in the cup, or glancing into the future, trying to discover the face of a potential lover??? Her face looks almost sad, yet calm and gentle. There is compassion in her eyes. I also notice that she is holding her gown against her chest...trying to protect her heart??? The Queen of Cups is generous with her emotions, very sensitive...she needs to be aware of her own needs and to nurture her heart.

OK...this is getting a little strange.....
I pulled the Queen of Wands two days ago (so I don't plan to post a detailed description of the card tonight).
My card for the 18th was the Queen of Cups....three Queens in a row??? Hmmm....
I remember last week pulling three Knights in a row....so I went back to check my posts just now. Sure enough, on the 11th and 13th I pulled the Knight of Swords, and on the 12th it was the Knight of Cups!!!!
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on this???
Is it fairly unusual to pull the same court card (different suits) for three consecutive days....or am I just overthinking here??? :P
Thanks....
:) Luna

Hi Luna,
At least the court cards for the Spiral are gorgeous lol - but I have no idea why you are pulling so many of them. I've just got my Spiral down, can't remember the last time I looked at it - I'd forgotten how beautiful they are.
Edited to add:-
Looking at the Queens again, these cards could mean you moving from the Wand Queen faze to the Cup Queen - the Knights last week could have been either people or situations again that you were passing through.

Luna I looked in some of my books about multiple card draws of the same suit.
3 Queens and 3 Knights have similar meanings.
In both cases thay talk of you being in social situations.
Have you been going out with alot of friends in the last two weeks.
I think it was last week that you went out with friends even though you had no $ and you found your Greenwood deck!
Maybe all those people cards has to do with you getting out more and being more social.
In one book it said three Queens could indicate a group of women gathering over coffee or lunch.
Three Knights indicate a party of people that are all adults, as opposed to 3 Pages that would include mostly young people or children.

VERY interesting.....thanks Emily and lark, for your thoughts on this...I have been thinking about the events of the last couple of weeks, and YES it is becoming more clear to me...
Emily~I agree, the courts in this deck are GORGEOUS, with so many little details...I have enjoyed studying them!!! I also agree with your interpretation....that the Queens are representing different aspects of my personality on different days (I have been going through some changes lately....) and the Knights representing other people in my life...
Lark~I looked back at the dates, and the Knights actually came up right around the time I went with my friends...overall I would have to agree with your idea that the courts represent my being more social lately....definitely true, I have made several new friends recently, both in person and online!!! :D I tend to be more the "Hermit" type, so this change has been very exciting and a little scary for me.....definitely having an impact right now!
Thank you both for your help and insight....

*whew* (relieved not to have another court card LOL :P)
This card traditionally makes me think of sharing material gifts, monetary grants or loans, generosity....yet in this card, I am seeing something different....
The king stands facing a woman, and between them, facing the two of them, is an older gentleman. It appears that the three of them are all embracing hands...there is a pair of scales hanging down below their hands. My first thought upon looking at this card had nothing to do with an exchange of money....it looked to me like a wedding ceremony! The old man--"beggar" according to the LWB--looks like a religious figure, performing the ceremony to unite the king with this woman. Strange!!! I wonder if anyone else might see this too....
Maybe this means that there is a financial matter involving some type of long-term commitment between both parties???
Anyone have other thoughts on this one???
:) Luna
PS: since I have no plans to either attend a wedding or take out a loan tomorrow....I am stumped!!! :P

Six of Pentacles: The six of pentacles denotes equality between all people, giving and receiving with no strings attached. You may receive gifts of material value or simply gifts of love. You may be the donor, able to give with an open heart. Practical help may come when you need it. With this card you are not on your own; there are others who are willing to share with you and you with them. There is a karmic message in the six of pentacles: you reap what you sow.
And the intro. para. to the sixes says: The four sixes correspond to the card of the Lovers. Six is a number of harmony and balance; these cards signify the opportunity to find equilibrium by making the right choices in life. According to the Kabbalah, the four sixes dwell in Tiphareth, where harmony is reached. The knights also dwell here; they represent the masculine force of each suit coming together.
I put my Spiral deck in a plastic zip-loc baggie w/some Nag Champa because it still has the "plastic" smell, even though it's a year old. Slowly it's absorbing the incense smell. Bit by bit, I'm determined to use this deck more because I really like the size of it and most of the artwork!

Thanks Jeannette....GREAT information!!! :)
I definitely need to get this book....the LWB does not give much information...I really found it interesting the way she configured these three people. It really did remind me of a wedding ceremony...maybe it has to do with the six being related to the Lovers, as well as the idea of balance, give and take....
Regarding the new-deck smell....this deck does not bother me at all, BUT I did need to "cleanse" my Radiant Rider Waite....sealed it in a bag with some white sage, and that did the trick!!! :P

You're welcome for the info. The book is pretty good, it gives you more than the LWB (but doesn't include all the info. from the LWB. Go figure!). Unfortunately, though, the book isn't in color, just b&w. Color would have really been better I think. In case you wanted to study the cards, but might only have the book with you ~ you wouldn't need both. White sage might be a good thing to try, too! I'm very "smell sensitive."

WOW.....another Queen!!! This makes....four Queens in five days???
Interesting to note that the Queen of Pentacles is what I consider one of my significator cards (along with the 9 of Pents and the Moon....go figure, I can't decide on just one, LOL!!!)
This is a beautiful queen....she is out in her beautiful garden, enjoying the sights and sounds of nature....breathing in the aroma of freshly cut grass, roses, honeysuckle....
She looks very relaxed, laid-back...none of the "rigidness" I would expect to see in a royal figure. She is mother earth--practical, comfortable and generous toward others.
I love the way her dress appears to be made up of actual red roses...very lovely!
