Like many people here I'd adore to have this deck, and I check Amazon, Abe-books etc. regularly to see if one's come up. I've just seen one retailing from an Amazon marketplace seller at $605. Ironically, right beneath the price there's the little 'low price' logo!!!!!! :( I'm afraid the Greenwood will NOT be winging its way to me in the near future.
Question is - is any deck worth this kind of money? What do you think?

I don't think so!! Not unless it was an antique genuinely rare deck. You will probably get this deck eventually Bean Feasa at a decent price, might take a while though.

I saw that one too, ridiculous price.
Keep trying, I never thought I would own this deck but I was lucky enough to find one very recently in perfect, new condition, complete with the book for only $45 !!
Miracles do happen, you will find it I am sure.

No, it is not worth that.
It's a deck of cards, that probably cost. . .I don't know somewhere around $5-$10 to produce.
It was in print within the last 5 years I think too.
Silly.
People are greedy, but we allow them to be by supporting this nonsense and believing the hype.
I asked about a copy of the Hermetic once. The person was asking $150 US. When I balked and said I would never pay that, they wrote back and told me that that was the going price and they had every right to ask that for it.
Not in my life. Not in the life of anyone rational.

Although it is a great deck, I don't think any deck is worth that much money. No way, no how.
I would not pay more than $100 for any deck at all. Anything else to me would seem obsurd. $600 PLEASE!

That's the one I spotted & brought up. I have just been to EBay & have seen a *genuine* antique - a 1760's TdeM - going now for over $300, but the reserve hasn't been met; I suspect it will probably be $500. That *still* makes it less than this absurd price on a modern, *recent* deck! I'll post again with whatever price that one goes at.

Booksellers will tell you that the internet has driven up used book (and by extension tarot deck) prices to a ridiculous level. When an internet seller digs what he suspects is an OP book or deck out of the slush pile at a garage sale he immediatey checks the selling price at Amazon or American Book Exchange, where he may find some ridiculous price he thinks he has to match. It never occurs to him that the other dealers have all done the same and have settled by default on a price that no one will actually pay. Remember, these are asking prices; no one may ever have actually bought one of these books or decks at the listed price. I can often find these same books at Moe's or Shakespeare & Co in Berkeley priced at 60% of their face value. But if you're far from the cultural centers you're basically out of luck.

I asked my Greenwood what he thought of people having to pay $ 605 for his brothers. He told me 7 of cups "Mourning".
I paid $ 38 for mine - but I could not have done it without Ravenswing, I bought it from a seller who only shipped inside US and Ravenswing shipped it on to me :)

Of course it's worth it to those who bid it up to that price. If you're not involved in the transaction, then your sense of 'worth' is irrelevant in this case. Pure Capitalism is codified greed, and to even the smallest extent, we all participate in it. Ridiculous, mournful, absurd, no, this is just business, those terms are better applied to the state of the world that fosters it.

I'm not so sure about that TdM on eBay. There's a thread around here somewhere on it, several people feel doubtful about its authenticity.

I could never justify paying that much for a deck...regardless of its heritage!! And that much for a modern, recently OOP deck is amazing!

I think the prices for used decks on amazon are pretty random. I've seen the Tarot of the Dead on there for something like $200. I paid $15 for it on ebay. People think they can get that much for an out-of-print deck, I guess.
I'd love to own the Greenwood, but I can't even justify paying around $100 for it. Though if won the lottery or something...
Peace,
arcana

The Greenwood she was talking about does not involve bidding, it is the asking price of a marketseller. So far it is not sold yet, so that would mean potential buyers think it is not worth it.

Hehe, thanks Wolfspirit, I like the idea of the Greenwood itself getting upset over the price being asked for it.
Oh well, the search continues....
Funny thing is I do feel quite convinced that I'm going to have this deck some day. Don't know where I get that sense of conviction from. On my way to and from work everyday I pass a little antique furniture shop called Greenwood, and I always sort of nod to the name and smile to myself and think... it's on its way.

I think it all comes down to perspective and what a person can afford. I know people who think spending $25 on a deck is ridiculous.
Six hundred dollars is more than I want to spend for a deck but if someone else can afford it, they're welcome to it. I don't think it's any more irrational than any of the other things I see people spending money on these days.
My husband spent money on a mint Hermetic deck last year for me on our anniversary and I spent quite a bit on a de la Felicite. I can afford it once in a while and have no qualms about it.

About Ebay:
I have seen the scans of the deck & I figure, hey, if it turns out to be a crock, they will just have to refund somebody's money! It looked genuine enough to me, but I don't think you can *really* tell without actually having it in your hands.

well, it really is up to you. if you have the resources (money) as well as the desire for it, then by all means, don't let any negative comment here stop you.
i guess if i had the money, i'd go for the felicita tarot too.

I believe intentionality is a powerful force! You are doing your part, the universe may just do the rest for you. :-) Good luck!!

sorry to post again. couldn't resist.
paraphrasing from grace kelly: when it (originally LOVE) beckons you, follow HIM. though HIS voice may shatter your dreams.
if ya want it that much, go for it. this may just be one of the rare moments given to you to get it.

That's what I did - more debt to pay for the Alchemical, I mightn't have the opportunity again! Thank goodness for EBay saving my butt, sold another kind of rarity & can pay for this plus some besides!!

amen to that.
just did a search with "greenwood tarot" as a title on abebooks.com and got 0 matching results.
so: 1) i'm lousy at using a search engine or 2) the seller sold it at that price.

It's an amazon marketplace seller, Kissa, not abebooks who is offering the Greenwood at €605. It's still for sale, no takers yet.
AND
I notice it's the very same seller who's asking $989 for the Servants of the Light deck.
Hmmmm.....!

What bothers me most about this thread... Last year, when I was looking at Tarot decks at the local New-Age shop, they had 2 copies of the Greenwood! At the original market price! I'm guessing they don't have them any more... not if the used ones are going for over $600.

Not in my life. Not in the life of anyone rational.
And yes, anyone who is selling something, especially something "collectable", has the "right" to ask just about any price they want. But we, as consumers, also have the right to tell them they're full of it (or full of themselves maybe?).
By the way... I have a vintage Aladdin/Stanley brand thermos-style bottle. Slightly used. I bought it myself clear back in the 70's. Asking price is $235,000.00 (USD). Any takers?
