But last week in a weak moment, I grabbed an inexpensive Grimaud Marseilles on eBay.
Now I am NOT a Marseilles fan (the deck, not the city)...in fact I'm rather neutral (and quite uninformed) about it. But after grabbing the Grimaud, the natural thing to do was to grab a Hadar from Amazon.ca.
Huh?
The day before they arrived Elf read for me in person with her Hadar, and gifted me a gorgeous silk shantung spread cloth from a secret supplier only we know of (thanks for sharing Elf). The brick red of the cloth perfectly matches the Hadar. I was rather stunned at how evocative some of the images were. The reading was powerful. And she was good at it. Intuitive reader that I am, I didn't expect to get much off this deck, in spite of the many forum claims to the contrary.
When the Hadar arrived (on the same day the Grimaud did) I whipped out my cloth and cracked her (the deck) open. Sometimes I buy impulse decks that are different from what I usually go for, and get them home and wonder why. I played around with the deck (which does not arrive in the usual order? Can someone explain this?) and rearranged it to verify that it was complete.
And then the the Hermit jumped out and explained that I should journal about him.
Me, who has probably 3-4 tarot journals of about 4-6 pages each.
Regardless, I grabbed him a new notebook, insisting that he share it with the entire deck, and took him to my bed (so soon after meeting him, no less).
And began to write. Just a page, though I know there is more from him tonight. I was surprised at how much he evoked, and that I even came up with a new insight or two for myself with him. Neat! This does not frequently happen - primarily because I never journal. :) I rediscovered the space and quiet inside to do it - This has been missing from me for a while.
I even seem to have an interest in exploring symbolism of the period...who knew?

Isn't it fun and exciting when a new door opens?!
Looking forward to hearing more about your new Marseillian path. And Diana will be so pleased!

I think that hermit may have helped you quite a lot :)
Thanks for sharing - I've been uming and ahing over the Hadar Marseilles for a couple of weeks now.

I see your addictive habits continue unabated. Did you hear the story about the tarot collector who traded decks that had only been used once on a Sunday by a little old lady from Pasadena?
That is an old used car joke. Anyways, enjoy your new decks. Dave.

Make sure you read up about Hermes the three times great (Hermes Trismegistus) if you're busy studying the Hermit.

sd -
Funny that you have the Grimaud and the Hadar. These are the two I own as well, and for very similar reasons.
I purchased the Grimaud in 1996 while I was in Paris with my brother. At that point, I was still not back into Tarot full force like I am now and only owned the RWS. My intent at the time was to own a French language RWS because I thought it would be "unusual". My brother convinced me that since we were in France (albeit many kilometers away from the city of Marseilles), I should own a native deck. That was how I came to own the Grimaud.
Two weeks ago I was in Quebec City with Gardener (a city I have wanted to visit most of my adult life - I imagined it as "Paris Light") and of course had to purchase a deck there. I almost bought an English Language deck I was looking for (the Chinese Tarot) but the Hadar kept calling me. I saw it as a sort of symmetry to that day in Paris almost eight years earlier.
I am still not convinced I will be a convert to reading with either, but I appreciate the beauty and history of the decks. Maybe next get together I can coerce you into a reading with your Hadar? After all, shouldn't you save those readings for those of us of French descent?

Why hello songdeva,
Falling for my Hermit?
Hummph. Men.
He tried that with me too.
He popped up during my first foray thru the Marseilles realm. Just when I was thinking the folk inhabiting it were pretty weird Hermit shows himself and explains that if I just give them all a chance I will grow to like them...maybe even love them.
I haven't journaled much about him or them, just recording my readings as I play...
Thanks for saying I was good at the Hadar.
You must have been raptly staring at the cards the couple (ahem) of times I had the deer in the headlights look.... :)
And so glad you are enjoying your new spread cloth.
Gifting and receiving are marvelous, aren't they?

I've actually had the Hadar sitting in my basket at Amazon.ca for a couple of weeks now, waiting for the day I could afford it. Just one click away...
But then, there's the Camoin-Jodo...
Are we all having a mass conversion experience?

I prefer to think of it as a mass enhancement experience. ;)

Me too, but with a darling little Spanish Tarot deck (Fournier).
At the first proper look at the cards (as opposed to the first sift-through) the fool gave me a whole new insight and with response like that.. I can't help but be swayed. :)
