Is there such a thing as a deck that gives bad readings?

I've always believed that it is the person using the cards that had the special ability to bridge the gap between the person being read for and the cards...all the decks i've used have given me consitently reliable readings, and the accuracy has been consitent from one deck to another...that is until I used the Radiant Waite....I just could not, no matter how many times i tried, get an accurate reading from them. I interpreted the meanings as I would using any other Rider style deck, but it seemed that the messages I got from these cards were always wrong and way off base! So, I stopped using these cards, and went to one of my other Rider style decks, and then my readings improved and were significantly more accurate again! This made me think if indeed the cards we use could have any sort of influence in the message we get? The funny thing was that the first deck I used was the basic Rider Waite, so why would the Radiant Waite give me such skewed, mixed messages??? Any comments, suggestions?

Hi yve, my guess would be that the specific colors of the Radiant do not appeal to you on an inner level, and this interferes with your ability to connect with your intuition when doing readings with it. Others will have different responses (for example, I get excellent readings with it) so it's probably just an individual thing.

I ended up giving my radiant RW to my four year old daughter. It just looked so kiddie and I realized I could never take it seriously.

I'm having this trouble with the Gilded tarot. :( I like the deck alot but for some reason I'm not connecting with it. (??) The readings always seem off base.

The Gilded has been like that for me, too, also!! (<- "Mutts" fan) I have gotten a better reading out of it since the first time I used it, but that was in person which is rare for me. I agree with Lee: I think this (RRW) doesn't pan out with your intuition - I guess the same is true of the Gilded, though I *hope* to give good readings with it in the future!

After I bought and bonded with my Spiral deck, I read the reviews of it on Amazon. One reviewer said they found it actually *lied* in every reading!
I chalk it up to personal preference, reading styles, and maybe even the energies varying from one copy to the next. I trust my Spiral!

Yes, the Thoth.

I wouldn’t say my Thoth gives bad readings, but it doesn’t like giving me good news, that’s for sure!
I’ve stopped pulling cards for the day. I got tired of interference, cruelty, strife and failure. I still really like my Thoth, I just hope it’s a phase it was going through.
But I’ve noticed that my mini Hanson Roberts doesn’t want to talk to me lately. I used to get fantastic readings for myself, and I still get good readings for others, but not for me :( Yesterday I asked it why and got the 7 of cups. I think it might be jealous that I’m polydeckamous. :p

I think Tarot is always right on the cards it uses to answer any of our questions but we can not get the message because we can not connect to the deck or we can connect but deep inside we don't like some of the cards or the art, in many threads is common to find people longing for "the one" deck, maybe our subconscious plays tricks on us and we can not get clear messages from certain decks.

I think you have a point there! I'm longing to get the Baroque Bohemian Cat Tarot, and am having trouble getting it. I think longing for this deck is getting in the way of my connecting with my Gilded (a recent purchase).

Everyone has a valid and valuable point...I guess, I just can't understand how I could connect with the regular Rider Waite, but not with the Radiant? I actually like the colors, and the cards seem more pleasant and appealing than the regular Rider deck...but it is like it is always lying to me! Giving me false readings....how could I interpret this deck differently or wrong from the regular Rider?

Or because, I would add (& open myself up for loads of counterargument :) ) the deck itself is an impure or imprecise expression.
I use Marseille-type decks mostly now, but I do like to pull night-time comment cards from other decks, & I find, more & more, that the other decks, while pretty, often make no sense at all. If, on the other hand, I close my eyes & focus on what a card from another deck would look like in a Marseilles deck, the message comes through & I almost always understand. So, I've developed a very personal opinion that Marseille-type decks are pure tarot, or as close to it as we have now, & that other decks reflect (or, in some cases, deflect) it's impulses. This opinion is based on the simple fact that (for me) other decks just don't work as well.
Looking back, other decks did work very well before I "discovered" TdM  So, maybe it's just a trust issue (but no, I do feel that some decks--for example, the Thoth--are just bad--unusable--detrimental to health safety compassion & personal well-being-- . . . !!)
