Cosmic Tribe Tarot: A few questions...

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 19 Oct 2004, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Hi,

I have looked through all of the on-line images of the Cosmic Tribe Tarot and I am really interested in this deck.

Could people who have this Tarot, please tell me:-
- Are the colours as vivid and bright as the images on the net? (I am really into vivid, bright decks)
- What are the borders / text like? The web site shows no borders or text at all- I would love it just like this. I assume there are borders and text?
- What are the card backs like- colours / design?
- What is the deck like to read with?
- How big are the cards (dimensions?)

Many thanks

Regards,
Ian

Hi Ian,

I traded mine away so I can't go and get it. Joan Bunnings' site shows the card backs. Here's a link

As far as I can remember there is a slim black border aroung the cards and the colours are very bright. The deck is Thoth based and the book that comes with it is excellent.

There is a study group dedicated to this deck right here on AT. You may find some answers there - I've just noticed that Solandia has put it back in the forum archives so unfortunately as you're not a subscriber you can't see it.

Love

Sulis xx

Hi IDN,
Cosmic Tribe has become one of my favorite decks even though I got it by accident. (I got it confused with the Cosmic Tarot.) If you look in the upper right corner of your screen you will see a "Search" feature. Click on that and type in the name Cosmic Tribe. You should get a list of some of the discussion we have had about this deck. Personally I think the nudity is very tastefully done. At first I was a bit shocked by it but the more I studied the deck, the more I saw that the nudity works well on these cards. This deck has one of the most beautiful High Priestess cards that I have ever seen! One look at this card and you really can see the way the energy is gathered into the solar plexis, focusing in on the person's intuition. Great deck! Enjoy!

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback so far. I have done a Search on this site and read the various threads- they all seem to generally favour the deck. Any other specific comments on the colours, card quality, etc; would be welcome.

I found this to be a stunning deck to read with- both visually and Tarotly. (Crikey, I'm making up many new words today!)

The backs are gorgeous, and the cards are indeed very bright. Also very well done. Very expressive.

The nudity I also found loses its shock value after a while, bt maybe that's just me growing up: I was 17 when I got the deck. It's great reading for close friends, drunk people, nudists (duh!), a lot of Pagans, hippies, etc. It also tends to get conversation flowing and a crowd gathered when you read for somebody at a party with it!

Where I live, it has been dubbed 'The Nekkid Tarot', and at the Tarot Coffee Club it tends to be the deck that everyone wants to show the newcomers... })

Blessings,

Kiama

I have this deck and I read with it just at the privacy of my own home .
It has vivid colors, and the images are outstanding.
However, the card stock may not be the best, and it seems that because it was manufactured in China it suffered some basic quality finish seen in most US games decks, Lo Scarabeo's, llewyellyn's and some other privately published decks.
The size is a bit largish, the borders are white, and there are 3 lovers' cards, making it an 80-card count.
This deck is usually sold as a set, and the accompanying book, which is made of very good paper quality, that should have gone into the deck as well, is a good 200- page read, but the packaging, as far as I remember was a bit awkward.
But one can and will usually overlook these minor imperfections in favor of the outstanding artwork of the cards.

I was on Amazon tonight- ordering Joan Bunning's "Learn the Tarot"- couldn't resist putting one more item in the Basket..... The Cosmic Tribe. Can't wait to get the deck!

A few days ago I downloaded each of the jpeg card images from the official site and have them loaded onto my Palm handheld- can't stop looking at them! I really like the minors.

Also looking forward to reading the book

IDN: The Cosmic Tribe Tarot is one deck whose online scans mirror its actual vividness & vivaciousness; do the deck justice.

It represents the first deck I ever bought online (after stumbling onto Stevee Postman's website) & the first digital-photo montage art deck acquired. I immediately liked the artwork & the 3 Lovers; The Hermit & The Star.

The borders are white & frame each card's images. The card names are on the border at the bottom of the cards (2 Priestess; 2 Swords; Princess of Disks, etc). The font appears to be New Times Roman or similar.

The card backs are quite intricate & colourful with a shadow box appearance. Consist of divided segments with images evocative of each of the 4 elements & a stylized eye in the center.

The deck is Thoth-based (new to me at the time). The nudity seems natural to me & I find it reads well. I use it for pesonal readings & for others.

Card dimensions are 3 inches by 5 inches.

In the book, each card is introduced with a commentary or a poem, followed by an essay related to its imagery & ends with its divinatory meaning. It is not written in the "usual" style of a Tarot book but more like a stream of consciousness; free-flowing thoughts complimentary to the free-spiritedness of the deck's theme.

Hi IDN, now that MeeWah answered your specific questions, and you have already ordered the deck, I will add some other comments not specifically related to your questions.

This is my primary tarot deck, and has been since the day it arrived at my home. I did not expect to fall in love with it, I ordered it for collector reasons, it is the first deck to have 3 lovers cards. The backs are beautifule, but not reversible (which has not been a problem for me, and yes I use reversals).

In reading with this deck I have found brutal honesty, which is just what I like in a tarot deck. The colors are very vived, and several cards have hidden images in them. The cards never quite look the same to me in each use, seems to depend on the question as to what will just pop out and hit me in the face *LOL*. The nudity is a design element, and the creator used all kinds of body types. This deck is not a sensual or sexual deck, it is solid and well done. It is Thoth based so the minors are not full illustrations, they are what I call "moody-minors". The colors and images give you the feel of the card.

I hope you love the deck as much as I do. It has been my primary deck for over three years, and I honestly have to say that it has been the easiest deck I have ever worked with.
