I've been reading for over 30 years. I have gone from deck to deck and some speak to me at times, others at other times.
I just saw pictures, for the first time, of DeAngelis' Universal Tarots. I LOVE THIS DECK!!!! I have really taken a shine to other decks, but this one simply screams at me. It's like the characters are living. AND....they make a mini deck!
A new addition has just been made to me Christmas list. :-)

I have the Universal Tarot and it is a beautiful deck - very close to the Rider Waite imagery but done in a different style. All Lo Scarabeo decks are of the same quality and card stock and usually all the same size. Its a nice alternative to the Rider Waite style but still easy to read with.
I did actually buy the Mignon (small) size first for carrying around with me then ordered the standard size after. The Mignon is very easy to carry round.
Its a nice deck - Hope you get it for Christmas :)

:-) Absolutely. Me too! :-)
Yes, the drawings have a much more raw and earthy feel to them, to me. The little details like the type of boots they wear and the way their clothes hang, and the landscape and the clouds...it just seems more alive.
Like you, I usually will buy both the regular size and the mini of a deck I like. I do love carrying around my cards in my purse, and also I like the mini deck because I like to read in bed at night, and it gives me more room when the cat wants to lie down. :-)

I am a fan of the Universal as well. I like it better than the Rider Waite becuase of the different style artwork. Very good deck!

Hmmm. I finally saw most of the cards from this deck. I just noticed. None of the cards seem to have yods. I haven't seen the tower, but the Ace of Swords and the Moon don't have them.
Any thoughts on why he would delete them? Still love the deck, but find it curious.

I hadn't noticed that either bigcaat - maybe because its a completely redrawn version and some of the symbolism has been lost. (off to find my big version of the Universal) :)

and I've seen in old webpages that this was originally marketed in a 22 card majors only version as a kind of gypsy deck art novelty. I guess at some point it was expanded to 78 cards and De Angelis chose to omit the PCS details to be closer to Waite--this is a guess. I read the reviews on tarotpassages.com and there's not a mention to the lack of yods--unless I missed the information.

I enjoy this deck, it's pretty in my eyes and works well for me.
