Good art decks

Hi all,
There are some decks that just have absolutely stunning artwork. Some of the pictures in these decks could be in an art gallery. The Victoria Regina deck is one such deck that I think has outstanding artwork. I'm curious about what decks other people think have really good art.

I think the Rohrig is incredibly artistic and beautiful.

Strange2  28 Dec 2004
The Margarete Petersen Tarot, Ironwing Tarot, Mary-el Tarot, and Blue Moon Tarot immediately come to mind as decks with stunning and unique artwork.

As a matter of fact, the paintings for the Blue Moon Tarot by Julie Cuccia Watts were on display in an art gallery recently!

Strange2

I don't know the first three, but I'm in strong agreement on the Blue Moon Tarot

The Golden Tarot by Kat Black is a deck I think is stunning. Of all my decks this is the prettiest - and it reads like a dream too :)

ambermoon  28 Dec 2004
The Tarot of Prague
The Goddess Tarot
The Faeries' Oracle
The Lovers' Path
The Enchanted Tarot

Just to name a few of my favorites.

I've only seen it online, but the Gilded Tarot is also breathtaking. It may well be my next deck, but I want to savor The Lovers' Path for a few months first.

Cerulean  28 Dec 2004
Celestial Tarot -Brian Clark/Kay Steventon
Lovers Path Tarot - Kris Waldherr
Druid Craft - Will Worthington

A little older 2004

Golden Tarot - Kat Black
Golden Tarot of the Estensi - Jo Dwarkin/G. Berti

Of course there are more, but I'm looking at some stunning ones with just the above.

Regards,

I'd rate the majors in the Haindl as the most beautiful of all ... but I really don't like it as a deck.

SunChariot  28 Dec 2004
I guess all Tarot decks are works of art. And like any work of art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For me the decks with artwork I find most impressive are:

The Lovers' Path
The Gendron Tarot
The Haindl Tarot
The Goddess Tarot
Maybe the Ancestral Path too

oh, and of the decks that have not yet been released:

The Tarot of Dreams and
The Gaian Tarot

What don't you like about the Haindl? It was my first and I still love it. I have heard people say they find it negative, but I have never seen that myself.

I think the druidcraft deck is stunning and very readable as well!

SunChariot  29 Dec 2004
Me too, on the stunning part. :-) When you mentioned it, I went and looked it up, and it went right up there on my list of decks I want to own one day. :-)

The Archeon Tarot coming out this coming Spring from US Games.

northsea  29 Dec 2004
The Robin Wood, ...I don't use it for readings so it's one of my decks I keep for the art.

WolfSpirit  29 Dec 2004
Druid Craft
Druid Animal Oracle
Ancestral Path
and a selection of cards from the Merryday.

These are the ones that spring to mind immediately, but there are probably more. I also have collage decks, but when it comes to just artwork I pick decks with good old fashioned painting on them :)

Magi  29 Dec 2004
I'd have to say the Celtic Dragon deck. It was the first and most loyal deck I've ever had, and still my main deck.

smokey  29 Dec 2004
Copy & agree with a few already named, such as:
Gendron.
Blue Moon.
Mary-EL.
Selected cards from Faerie's Oracle.
The Golden Tarot by Kat Black.
((Edited to add:)) Goddesss Knowledge Cards, by Susan Seddon Boulet. (I just got these in the mail, and felt some belonged here for their art!)

Sulis  29 Dec 2004
Isn't taste strange?

Many people here have mentioned the Gendron - I traded that one away because I thought the artwork was so dissappointing.

Out of the decks I own I'd say that the artwork is really good in;

DruidCraft
Thoth
Light and Shadow

Why didn't anyone give any LoScarabeo examples yet? Most of those (if not all) have INCREDIBLE artwork... The Da Vinci Tarot, Dürer Tarot and Crystal Tarots always take my breath away.

with the artist as Jo Dworkin and the text by Giordano Berti

Just my suggestion above.

Lo Scarabeo decks are so TINY though! If they had larger decks of the Durer & others with nice art then I think we'd see more mention of them.

Frank Hall  29 Dec 2004
Along with the excellent modern art decks , let us not forget the original Pierpont Morgan Visconti , and the original Tarot of Marseilles . And I must add the Roots of Asia and the Nigel Jackson Tarots as artistic successes of recent time.

I'm going to second HudsonGrey's assessment of the Archeon Tarot. I cannot WAIT for that deck to come out. I've only seen it online, of course, but what I've seen looks incredible.

Go here for pictures of the full deck. Gorgeous in my opinion.

I like for historic Art inTarot -Estensi Golden Tarot of renaissance
For modern Art in Tarot- Mary-el Tarot
For computer Art in Tarot -Ethereal tarot and unpublished Soul Radience
My admiration goes to anyone who has the skill to create a deck for tarot. I imagine it is extreme hardworkas in Kat Blacks Golden. regards Rosanne

The Golden Tarot is incredibly beautiful, as is the Crystal. And they are both good reading decks, although I am admittedly just learning the Crystal. The Golden just grows more and more beautiful as I use it.

BlueLotus  22 Jan 2005
I love the artwork of DruidCraft, Lover's Path, Spiral, Golden, Chinese, Celestial, Gaian, Blue Moon, and some Lo Scarabeo decks such as Medieval Scapini, Ramses, Journey to the Orient, Witchy, Vikings, Fey, and Native American.

But I had also come across an interesting new/old deck with some exquisite art. I think this deck is still in print.

Moonbow*  22 Jan 2005
My choice:

Rohrig
Roots of Asia
Ancestral Path

I'm sure I will think of more, if so I'll be back :)

Fudugazi  22 Jan 2005
The Tarot of Prague and the Tarocchi di Vetro (Crystal Tarot) any day.

I've seen the Golden Tarot on the net and it looks wonderful, very cleverly executed too.

The Dante Tarot looks pretty amazing too, though I am not sure if I could read with it, as I like faces with expressions to read with - but its artistic style reminds me of surrealist posters of the 1920s, which I've always liked.

Dorothy Simpson Krause's Millenium Tarot has just been published as a 78 card deck - well, what can I say, I've followed it since it was a majors deck. The Devil - oh yummy - is portrayed as a beautiful, temèpting, decadent-looking young man. And it's gorgeous - a mixture of Renaissance and classical art, mainly, but arranged very cleverly- - it has a strange not-quite-familiar look, though in fact several of the pieces DSK uses are familiar. I don't understand why it's not been reviewed on AT yet. I can't wait to own it :) Here's a link:

1. The Rohrig is my first deck and I still love it! I have issues with certain cards, though.

2. I just got the Gilded Tarot and it is fabulous, though the cards are not large. They make up for it in beauty. I am patiently awaiting the artist's (Ciro Marchetti) next deck -- the Tarot of Dreams

3. H.R. Giger (22 card) deck -- stunning, plus a heavy, deeply psychological companion book.

4. I got the Haindl for the art but don't use it much for readings.

5. Brian Froud's Faery (Faerie?) Oracle 66-card deck is stunning and a must-have, especially for intuitional iconoclasts.

6. The Celtic Dragon is very pretty, but to be honest, I haven't looked at anything other than the box in about 3+ years.

7. I want the Fey Tarot -- more lighthearted, and I haven't seen it in person, but I think it'll be a good buy.

8. I also want Luis Royo's Black Tarot -- he's a phenomenal artist in his owh right.

So, I'm wondering when id Michael WHelan going to do a deck?
(or has he already...?)

OMG!!! That is phenomenal -- definately MY type of art!

Well, I can't comment on many of the decks already mentioned because I don't own them (yet!), but my favorite deck art deck so far is the Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg. I also love the unusual art style of the New Century Tarot. The Ship of Fools tarot also qualifies as a beautiful art deck in my opinion, although it may not be to everyone's taste as it isn't in color.
