Universal Waite

I've been enjoying a rediscovery of the Rider Waite Smith deck, and last night bought the Universal Waite. Has anyone else got this version?

I like it very much but have been feeling a little guilty. Although it claims to use the Pixie Colman-Smith illustrations, the lines are finer, and the faces of people seem to be more finely etched and sensitive.

The colours are by Mary Hanson-Roberts and are a little more subtle than the original. The cards themselves are sturdy and laminated.

Would be interested to know the experience of others wiith this deck?

I have this deck and like it but I feel as though it taunts and teases me most of the time and doesn't like to be shuffled sometimes. It mocks me,LOL. I do like the colors of this deck.

I'm using this deck for a Tarot course, altough I was used to the "original" RWS deck, the change was a good one, these cards make me feel more relaxed during the readings because of the softer lines and colours. I also find this deck more comfortable for mediation and study.

ADDED: I forgot! the card back for me are much more beautiful than the RWS design.

i have been using this deck for (oh God, can it be true), 15, years. i always buy my decks in person, i like to pick up every deck in the store, and the one i feel a connection with i buy. i have always been willing to change, but the good ole, u-w is always the one that i feel. and yes, i too have noticed some times they do get an attitude. i guess that is why i get along so well with them. they are as stubborn and playful as i am. i find it helps to talk to them when they are acting up, ask what is wrong, and if necessary tell them to stop now and act right. and don't be suprised if they somtimes decide to talk in riddles. i know the tarot itself can be a riddle, but if you use the u-w very long you will see what i mean. sometimes, they want to phrase things the way yoda in star wars, or the chesire cat would. but that is the u-w for you. they can be as fun as reading itself.

I chose the Universal Waite over the Original RW for these very reasons. However, I just read a post from a member who prefers the original over the "clones" because details are lost in the re-coloring. What do you think? I'm tempted to stop at Borders after work and pick up the original deck to compare the two. I find myself drawn to the details.

Hi Maggie and others ~

Thanks for responding. Here are some comparative images. The differences are mainly in colour intensity and the fineness of the lines.

If colours are important to you, then this could be significant but I think for me (I am sensitive to colours in interpretations} this may simply be a matter of adjustment..

With VI Lovers, you can clearly see some differences in the hair colour of the Angel and the colour and detail of the fruit and flower bushes behind the woman and man.

In VII Pentacles. you can see again the difference in colours but notice also the difference in the shoes of the man. In the RWS version, this is significant and is sometimes used in interpretations.

I will persevere with my new Universal Waite in reality and see how it goes. I use the Orphalese Tarot program a little and the UW was more easy to read on the computer screen than the UW.

Actually, looking at the images on the screen, the overall impact of the colours is very significant. It is much less obvious in reality.

Sorry... this is a little bit off topic but why the shoes colour in 7 of Pentacles are considered for interpretation? Thnak you

The Universal Waite was my first deck, and still my favorite. I have it in several different sizes, too! I like them all....

azuremariposa  10 Dec 2004
I got the Universal Waite earlier this year and now alternate between it and my Fey as my main deck for readings. I used the RWS for about 15 yrs straight before any deviation, so I was automatically comfortable with the Universal Waite. What I didn't expect was to notice things in the cards I hadn't really seen before. I mean, after 15 yrs w/practically the same deck, you'd think there wouldn't be any surprises. But it's true! There were many details that "sprang to life" for me with the Universal Waite that had never appeared to me w/the RWS. I truly love the Universal Waite, and honestly can't imagine going back to the RWS at all.

Anyway, best of wishes for you and your new deck! May you both grow to appreciate each other more and more as time progresses. :)

PL&L,

The Universal Waite was for a long time my favourite colouring of the Rider Waite - the colours are softer and as someone posted earlier faces and expressions are seen more clearly but I did a sort of full circle - I've just discovered the standard Rider Waite, the normal coloured one, and I've found that I love everything about this deck - some of the detail is a little harder to see but it just makes you study the deck.

I don't think I would have gone back to the Rider Waite standard without having first used the Universal so the Universal will always hold a special place in my heart.

I love the Universal Waite.... I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, they wouldn't have coloured the Rider Waite the way they did if they had the same opportunities for colouring as we have today...???!!

tarobones  11 Dec 2004
I also am a big fan of the Universal Rider Waite, and actually I consider it the standard Rider Waite, although I know it isn't actually. I just see it as a vastly improved version of the deck and will remain my favorite. Peace and blessings to all........Michael
