Just looking at the catagories of tarot, what do you all prefer? I break them into three catagories: Traditional (Old-school stuff like the Visconti-Sforza and Tarot de Marseilles), Rider Based (Any of the Rider decks, Robin Wood, that sort of thing), and Non-Traditional (Forgive me, but I put the Thoth deck in here as well as the Chaos deck or Elemental or any other newer, original decks). I personally like Rider Based stuff, but non-traditional sits well with me also. What type do you like? Or would you catagorize them differently?

Well, I'm weird. I prefer illustrated decks based on RWS symbolism (though I like intuitive reading as well, so intuitive decks do well by me. I never go just by symbolism). Yet at the same time, I HATE the Rider-Waite. I just never liked this deck, especially the colours in the original. On the other hand, I don't really like reading as much with Thoth-based decks (too weird) or Marseilles-based (I think most of these are ugly) because I prefer the illustrated minors; yet I own the Thoth and other Thoth-based decks, and I also own a Marseilles-based deck--and I love them all. So, I guess you could say I'm mixed--or just mixed up :)

I also love all three categories.
I learnt tarot with the RWS, although I don't use the RWS anymore decks based on this one are still the easiest for me to read, and there are also a lot of lovely decks in this category.
I have only just got an appreciation of Marseilles decks, I am now learning to work with them and I think I will love them a lot too.
And untraditional decks - I also love oracle decks, and I treat untraditional tarot much as such.

I tend to go for RWS symbolism - the Morgan Greer and the Rider Waite being two of my most used decks.
I'm not overkeen on the woodcut artwork of the Marseilles and find the Minors very hard to read but I do appreciate the symbolism and age behind the Marseilles so I do have the Fournier and a reproduction Conver - the Conver being the closest to the Marseille woodcut imagery and surprising to me I do like it.
The decks that don't follow RWS and go off and do their own thing I have the most trouble reading with - the Haindl, the Quest, Osho Zen being some - I like these decks but they are hard work. :)

I go with RWS clones, but just recently I've been drawn to some of the Thoth-based decks, as well as the Thoth itself. Hopefully I'll be able to stretch my limits a bit. Eventually, I'd like to work some more with Marseilles-type decks.
So I guess my preference for RWS clones is more a stage of development than an actual preference. It's just what I started out with, but something tells me I'm due to try some new stuff.
