Hey everyone, my name is Yazmin. I'm new to Tarot, thought I've been interested in it for about a year. I don't have a deck yet, but I've been researching spreads and similar things. I'm fascinated with the Robin Wood Tarot Deck. I mean, ALL the cards from that deck amaze me. But I'm also interested in the Aquatic Deck. The Aquatic Deck is similar to the Rider-Waite Deck which I know is the best deck for beginners. Since I don't know that much about Tarot, which deck do you recommend for me, the Robin Wood Deck or the Aquatic Deck?

Hi NYCTeen!
Don't take my word for it (cause I don't own it), but it's my understanding that the Robin Wood is similar to the Rider Waite as far as interpretations and imagery go just with a more pagan flavor. I would get this one over the Aquatic any day. I always prefer an original Rider Waite to a recolored one.
But don't get me started on beginners decks! I will give a punch in the nose to the next person who tells someone they have to start with a Rider Waite. (totally kidding) Use which ever one you like best! I'll stop there.
Peace,
April

Just pick wich ever tarot you are drawn to. It's not enough to use a deck just because some one says it's the best one for you because it's a "beginer's" deck. You have to enjoy the imagery to enjoy reading the tarot.

Hi NYCTeen;
The Aquatic is not published at this time.
The Robin Wood was the first deck I connected with too, and many years later it is still my main reading deck.
I don't think you can go wrong by getting it as your first deck.

Hey Yazmin,
If you're drawn to the Robin Wood, I'd say go with your instincts. The Robin Wood is a terrific deck with lots of layers to explore right off the bat. And if you choose to work with it. I heartliy recommend Robin Wood's book that she wrote to accompany the deck, which is jampacked with observation and anecdote about how the cards were designed and how they evolved over time before they reached their final form...
I've had the RW deck for years and got amazing results from it from the start. That said, I only recently discovered that the companion book even existed... Totally engrossing and enjoyable, and doubly so if you're working with the deck simultaneously. I hadn't worked with the deck in years and reading the book rekindled my enthusiasm for it. What was startling was how much it opened my eyes to elements/details of the cards.

I don't often find that the books that are written for certain decks are of any value, but this one is a big exception.
Scion is so right, the book helps you see the many layers for the cards.
Why she chose the colors she did.
Her thoughts as she designed each card.
Mine is falling apart I've read it so many times.
Congratulations on your new deck!

I'd recommend the book too, it explains why she put the things she did on the cards, and why she used the colors she did. I found mine at Half Price Books, but the book can be bought pretty much anywhere (they can order it for you).
The Robin Wood deck works very well with total beginners, and give a good read. Don't get bogged down with using the Celtic Cross spread, though, that's for more advanced readers--the number of cards can get confusing if you're only starting out.

The B&N I went to, didn't have the deck. I've gone to 2 different B&N's and neither has had them. I don't know where else to go...

B&N can order anything for you.
They all carry USGames and Llewellyn decks.
Tell them you want to order a Robin Wood deck and the publisher is Llewellyn.
It'll be there within a week for you to pick up.
I have had good luck finding decks at Borders too.
You can't order over your computer?

You can also order it from Robin Wood herself & have her sign one of the cards, the box or the booklet. She sells the book also (alone or together with the deck) AND the deck is available in Spanish now also.

(it's the third from the bottom on the left hand menu).

If you decide to shop at Morgana's Chamber, be sure to call ahead. For whatever reason, they don't keep very regular hours.
