Hi guys. Have been practicing tarot for a year or so now re reading for other people - but I have only ever used the Rider-Waite deck; great at first but now thinking about going onto another one. Which one would people recommend? I'd like an 'older' , more 'original' deck, if that makes sense, and would also like one with some original and beautiful images......the one I was thinking of was the Marsielles deck.... help!!
Thanks, Alice x

An older feeling deck but is wonderfully illustrated is the Medieval Scapini. I love this deck.

I'm not sure how you are defining older, but I sense you're looking for a deck that is older than RWS. That said--and if you will permit a tangent--take a look at the Mythic tarot. It's "older" in a different sense, but a very nice deck.

I am currently using the 'Ancient Tarot of Marseilles' and that has a very antique feel to it. I have been reading a lot of the 'how may it be read' threads here, started by jmd, and they are really helping my studies of the Marseille. I also have the Grimaud. There are some good threads here which look at all of the popular Marseille decks and which ones are prefered.
Best wishes with your search

That the Medieval Scapini is a beautiful deck. There are several ancient decks like the Ancient Tarot of Lombardy, the Anciet Tarot de Marseilles, etc. I do like the Esoteric Ancient Tarot by Etteilla. It has a mystical feel about it.--Tao

I also like the Ancient Tarot of Marseilles.
The Soprafino is another old-look deck. It looks different from most other decks - it is unlaminated, is smaller, and has square corners.
We have just had a few threads on it - you may want to check those out.
And let us know which one you decide on !

If you want a version of a classic deck, but in a better finished and more colourful incarnation, check out the Tarot de Marseille by Fournier. If Alida doesn't have it online, Il Trigono will, with six pictures or so. Its well worth consideration, but not "fully illustrated" like the RWS.
For a "fully illustrated" standard deck, but with a lot of beauty, and a classic look, check out the Golden Tarot of the Renaissance by Lo Scarabeo.
From your description, these might be really good choices for your "next step".
Best wishes, as you continue on the path!

Kat Black's Golden is a good choice, since it has magnificent art from the Renaissance, seamless collages seamlessly combined with the Waite-Smith symbolic system, which you know. Go for the Golden. (The other Golden is a good choice as well, although not Golden Dawn based.)

Hi Alice
Well you asked for a recommendation... and mine is a Marseilles (much as I still love other decks and Oracles everyone :))
If you go for a Marseilles, it's wise to decide whether you would like a modern production (like Hadar and Camoin), or a reproduction of an old deck, like the Conver (Heron or Lo Scarabeo).
If you look at the categories section on Aeclectic here:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/marseilles.shtml
... it gives you some idea of what I mean. (Some of these listed are Majors only). Although there are other decks which don't appear on this list.
From the UK I have found one of the best sites to order from (from a postage perspective) is:
http://www.playingcardsales.co.uk/cards/
OR
http://www.alidastore.com/
(Shame but you have just missed the Lo Scarabeo $5 sale I think)
Tarot Garden are also a good source:
http://www.tarotgarden.com/
AND of course sometime Amazon UK have what you want.
Felicity's site shows many different types of Marseilles decks too:
http://home.comcast.net/~felicityk/tarot/marseilles/index.html
Good luck with your choice, if you go for a Marseilles it would be nice to see you in the 'How may they be read' threads.
