G Rated Non Offensive Deck

Hi,

I currently own the Old Path deck, Rider-Waite deck, Thoth Deck and the Halloween Deck. I use the Rider-Waite deck sometimees, but I don't like the Christian imagery. I use the Old Path for my self and my family, but it has a lot of nudity. The Halloween is great, but I like using it seasonally.

I may be doing readings for a group of Girl Scout leaders, with some older girls as well. I am looking for a G Rated deck I can use for kids, since parents are sometimes offended by the nudity, but without a lot of Christian imagery.

Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere (maybe another thread here) that this is a good deck to read for children with.

The Morgan Greer and the DruidCraft are pretty non-offensive. There is still a little nudity in the cards - Lovers, Star etc but Ok for the older child I would think. The Morgan Greer reads very much like the Rider Waite Smith with it being a clone deck. :)

The Fradella Adventure Tarot uses comic book imagery. i agree about the Vision Quest. The Sakki Sakki is another. How about an antique tarot?

Oh, you know how much I LOVE the Druidcraft, but the Hanged Man is completely nude as well. I guess it depends on just how young the "kids" are. The nudity in the Druidcraft may be too well drawn! :o)

The Tarot of Timeless Truth is pagan based and has no nudity. Well, the Star is naked but she does not show much.
All cards can be seen at: http://tarot.leila.ca/

I think it all depends on what type of deck you're looking for. It should be something that both you and your audience find relevant and enjoyable.

A few examples:

The Victoria Regina is very decorous and does not exhibit an overt Christian theme--except perhaps for the Hierophant, who is depicted as a robed and bearded bishop. However, younger girls might find the deck too serious or intellectual.

Animal-themed decks, such as The Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot or Tarot of the Animal Lords, would be lighthearted, inoffensive choices. Really, many animal-themed decks would do the trick, these are just two personal favorites.

The Housewives Tarot is another fun deck that is unlikely to raise anyone's hackles.

The Sakki-Sakki is an excellent suggestion; its colors are fantastically bold and it is wonderful for imaginative work.

And of course, there's always the Whimsical Tarot.

Can I suggest the International Icon Tarot? I can't wait to get it for myself, but until then, I'm trying to push it off on everybody else...

It's unoffensive, you can't really consider that nudity, and everyone can relate to those figures, I think.

I would say that the inner child cards
might also work

There is the Stickfigure Tarot and the Ator Tarot, and (will he puke before he types it in?) The Hello, Kitty Tarot.

SphinYote  24 Jan 2005
I don't think the Hansen Roberts deck has any nudity in it. I could be wrong...I'd have to check.

Dark Inquisitor  24 Jan 2005
I think the Aquarian might work ,- or the Fantastical . You can see the whole Fantastical deck here:

Dark Inquisitor  24 Jan 2005
Ok- went upstairs to check :

The Aquarian has no nudity except for some tiny figural non-detailed side profile outlines on the bottom of the devil card- sort of mannikin-like. The Hierophant looks more like some kind of Mongol warrior, the Judgement card has a person blowing a horn over an open grave - the banner has an equal armed cross, but that predates Christianity anyway.

The Feng Shui has no nudity, and no Christian symbolism .

The Sacred Circle has no nudity , however a couple of the gowns on some ladies are a little filmy. But, you'd have to be looking with a magnifying glass to see any details probably and it's not noticeable at all.

There is no nudity in the Hanson-Roberts deck. Well, the Star is technically nude but she has long hair that covers all of the privy parts. I would have to say, IMO, that that's definitely one you should look into. Also, Moon Garden is recommendable. There is only partial/non-detailed nudity in the Star and I can't think of any instances of overtly Christian imagery in it: http://www.tarotpassages.com/gregoire1.htm

One more thought...as this sounds like a get-together that involves primarily women and girls, have you considered the Goddess Tarot? I've found that it's a great deck to do group readings with on a girls' night. It involves very gentle appealing artwork, everyone is fully clothed, and it's not full of Christian imagery (it is, after all, the Goddess Deck). Hope this helps, good luck!

I agree wholeheartedly on the Goddess Deck, and the Hanson-Roberts is a very sweet deck that is also very easy to read. The Goddess deck is one I find fascinating, as it forces you to look at some of the Majors in an unusual way, thus expanding the meanings to include women's experience a bit more.

A pretty deck, very bright and Springlike

LOVE THIS DECK! International Icon would be my first recommendation. Gender, race and occult tradition neutral without being neutered... A genuinely fresh take on the RWS that meets all of your criteria re: nudity, religion, etc. Yields superb in-depth readings and extremely appealing to people who aren't Tarot-oriented.

Housewives is a funny choice. And has a humorous hipness factor that might be useful and disarming. The Fey is another with a hipness and really appealing art, but may alienate folks not into the anime-styling.

Some people might suggest the Whimsical, though it's pretty saccharine (borders on twerpy) for older girls, or the Connolly which is about as defanged as you can get, and very lush visually, but somehow flat.

Hello Kitty would probably make the girls yack before Tarotbear does.

But my money is on the International Icon.

Lurea  24 Jan 2005
If we are talking about a girls' gathering, then you simply can't go wrong with the Goddess Tarot. It's wonderful! Even traditionally 'scary' cards such as Death, the Tower, and the Ten of Swords have been re-worked to be gentler, and more accessible. And think about actually giving young women, female-centric, empowering images! Not images that reinforce the current beauty cliches or the idea that they must 'get' a boy. I really can't praise this deck enough, it's gentle but still capable of busting up your illusions when there's a need... :D

BUT if you like Rider-Waite-Smith, then the Hanson-Roberts is another of my all-time fave decks. The artwork is very appealing, there is no actual nudity (all private parts are covered, either by hair, or by body position), and yet this deck pulls no punches--it is honest, insightful, and easy to read. :)

FlashFighter  24 Jan 2005
I second the Fradella Adventure Tarot..... but I dunno if the girls will dig the superheroes.... who knows, they might.

Rosanne  24 Jan 2005
How about the Osho Zen as a gentle feel good Tarot?

Dark Inquisitor  24 Jan 2005
Unfortunately, the Osho has a big pic of the criminal cult leader , the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh in it. ( I guess he is the Osho in Osho..) Lots of people have no idea who he was, but some might recognize him and think there is something really fishy going on.

Ceit  24 Jan 2005
I would say the Tarot of Oz- You might give a second look at the World -- Some skin but no outright nudity.

Rosanne  25 Jan 2005
Woops, I had forgotton about the great Bagwan, I took him out of my deck and use the blank card. I doctored it with picture of Ank shaped peice of Lapis Lazuli.Seemed the right thing to do so I could use the deck, regardless of my thoughts of that cult leader. Thanks. Regards Rosanne
