Templar Tarot Revisited

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 04 Feb 2005, and now archived in the Forum Library.

I'm thinking of getting the Templar tarot, and would love to hear from all of you about it.

I saw that there has been discussion about this deck, but not for a while, and I would really love your input.

If anyone is still interested (are you Dan?), I would love to exchange ideas about the cards when I get it.

(Seems difficult to get, for some reason).

Love to hear from you all! :-)

Hi Namaste -

I assume you are the Dan you are referring to? :)

I have this deck but haven't used it much (heck, haven't used many decks recently), but for some reason I love it, especially since it speaks to my troubled Catholic background.

I did have two copies but traded one away last year. I know there have been many available on eBay (some were signed by the author and illustrator). I believe the shop in Burlington, VT may still have a copy (it is where I purchased my first). Should I come across one, I can pick one up for you if you are interested.

I would love to get to know the deck better, so should you get it I would be up for a chat.

I have both of those decks, and honestly have never known what to make of either of them. If others want to discuss either or both, I am up for it. Thanks for the links RN.

I just checked Tarot Garden & it looks like they have it.
Go to The Tarot Garden & search Templar. It's the first one, click on boutique & as long as they haven't run out recently it's $25.

Is this deck sanctioned by the modern day representatives of the templars??i doubt it seriously.it looks way too new age.

I seriously doubt that any themed deck is sanctioned by the body it represents.

Plus, as a "secret society" which may or may not exist, I find it unlikely that any member would violate centuries of tradition to come out of hiding to sanction a tarot deck.

I doubt it. I personally do not care if it is or not. Official sanctioning of anything usually means a santizied version.

Who are they? If they should manifest themselves, maybe we'll know ;)

The Templars being Frankish, we might find that Jean-Louis Victor is one of them :)

I have neither these decks, but am attracted to the Tarot des Templiers - first time I've seen such a blowsy-looking Queen of Swords who looks like Rita Hayworth as a brunette (scroll down the page). Also - check out that fantastic Hermit swinging his lantern! Here, I'll try to attach it.

LOL Or Hedy Lamar.

I have Vassaux's Tarot des Templiers and have learned a lot from it. It's a very strange deck, all sorts of anomalous details that pop out at unexpected moments, in a clever tip of the hat to Language of the Birds. And it keeps sending my up th eladder to my half-forgotten templar histories. It has further eroded my mild terror about nonscenic/pip decks, though it's certainly no Marseille. :D

Anybody else have any experience with this deck? It's use doesn't seem very widespread here in the States.

Thank you, Rusty Neon, for the links. They are very different, but I find myself intrigued mostly by the Templar. :)

Yes, you are, the Dan. :D

Hmmm... That would be great. I find that up here, in Montreal, I have to order the less common decks, and it takes up to 2 months for them to come in, depending on the store's supplier. I've seen two on eBay, but both are up for auction. One of them ends in two days, and I shall see how high the bidding has reached. Sometimes, the end amount of the auction is higer than the store price of the deck...

I'm very glad that you would be up "for a chat" about the deck. The historical Templar "phenomenon" has always intrigued me, and, although I hear these cards may not adhere completely or solely to the Templars, I think they are quite "vocal", if I may use this term to describe them.

As to the skull and bones proviso, that I have also seen mentioned, I am always in mind, from an Art History perspective, of the Classic scholars who were portrayed, more often than not, with one hand resting on a skull.

I look forward to our chats! :)

It would be great to discuss this deck with you, Marion. :) I'm working on getting it at the moment.

Will keep everyone posted.

Quite right, Dan and Marion. :)

I would imagine that they have become a secret society, if they descendents even exist. (Might be interesting to investigate, though). Sanctioning usually does mean sanitization. Who knows, though, if we start discussing this or both these deck, someone with a remote affiliation might wish to contribute an insight or two. Knowing the synchronicity of the universe, anything can happen. I am deeply intrigued...

LOL... I don't have the deck, either, but I have seen images http://www.wicce.com/templierspix.html and, it's true, there is something very humorous (?), even strange, about these cards. I mean, look at the grin on the Fool's face. Death seems to be going about his business with unusual alacrity; the knight of pentacles (?) seem very jaunty, and will you look at the expression on the king of cups' face!

How do you find the other Templar deck?

I picked up mine on eBay. A while ago, can't recall how long ago now, less than a year though. They seem to pop up, the seller I bought mine from has listed it several times. Marion

Thanks, Marion. I'm waiting for the auction on two at eBay to come to an end. :)

When you handle and examine the Templar deck, what are your reactions, feelings, ideas, etc.? (I'm curious, having only seen images of the cards). :)
