does anyone know of a burlesque-style, pin-up inspired deck? nothing too nudie or trashy... just slightly trashy!!! i've been hired to read at a burlesque night and i want to have appropriate cards... thanks!

1. Art Nouveau, Lo Scarabeo

I believe Borders.com/Amazon.com/Tarotgarden.com might have mini and full-size versions.

2. But it's an oracle called "Tarot Yumi" and I believe Tarotgarden.com carries it--sorry, see it's out of stock...but I'll try to find another source.

2. My guess is that fanciful old twentieth-century might be good-so please excuse this take

a.Old style movie personalities...

Cosmic Tarot by N. Losche
I'm having a little trouble with the first link to the Aeclectic.net site - the second link might work better.

If you take out Death and the Devil, the other romantic-style movie personas might make this a costume-inspired deck:

Another take:

b.For fun
Tarot of the Witches (James Bond Tarot)--You can be the Solitaire and order drinks shaken, not stirred:

3. Did you want something bolder in terms of costumes, something with a French/Italian/Egyptian/Asian flavor? Sorry if I've not come up with anything too bold..

This is a pretty trashy oracle deck

A flashy tarot

And a bit sexy tarot

Have fun at your burlesque party :)

What about Casanova? I think that would be an appropriate deck. I think it's a Lo Scarabeo deck.

Emily  04 Mar 2005
Have you thought of the Rohrig? I don't class it as trashy but the Majors and Courts are very arty. Its a Thoth clone and very large. I always think its a seductive deck. Might be what you are looking for. :)

My vote goes to the LS Art Nouveau or the Casanova. Picking just one, it would be the LS Art Nouveau because it's more colorful - to me meaning more fun & celebratory, like burlesque! I secretly dream of learning to fan dance! Not a secret anymore, I guess. lol

Check this one out:

I'm not sure if its what you're looking for. And its majors-only. But its pretty neat, eh?

WOW. That deck is great.

I wish it wasn't majors-only!

gypsy  04 Mar 2005

Here's another: The Black Tarot...by Fournier I believe. Certainly available from Alida (one of their best sellers), and probably from Tarot Garden. Lots of skin for modern tastes, but no explicit sex per se.

MM ~ This thread got me wondering: why hasn't anyone made a Vargas girl Tarot? And why aren't majors-only decks sized the same as regular playing cards, so you can shuffle them in and READ? Free ideas for the taking, people! BB, Stella

MM ~ Oh, dear...I think I've killed this thread...BB, Stella

++++++++++

A pin-up girl tarot would be an interesting artifact indeed! I can certainly see all those Elvgren cuties sitting in for the World, the Star, and even the High Priestess...

(If only there weren't all those pesky males in a set of tarot images...!)

gypsy  11 Mar 2005
yes! a pin-up girl tarot is exactly what i had in mind. something light-hearted (but not frilly) and standard enough to actually do readings with.

I have not had as much exposure to as many decks as most here at ATF but I have to agree that LS Art Nouveau is one of the most colorful, and sensual decks I've seen in my opinion. And it is one that I've been wanting for a while now. I just think that the artwork is so wonderfully done.
I hope you have a great time at your party/show, burlesque thing, lol, no matter what deck you chose :)

Blessings,
Donna

i would love to see a deck like that! ither with vargas girls or like betty page on it, or like just a deck with old hollywood stars on it. and it would have to be photographic deck

stella01904  14 Mar 2005
MM ~ Betty Page, yes! Two decks, a Vargas deck and a Hollywood - Betty Page, Marilyn, Dietrich, Harlow, Myrna Loy...! BB, Stella
