VINTAGE TAROT CARDS AND BOOK IN BOX, OLD
Is anyone else here following this? Or, indeed, bidding.

That is very old RWS. I have never seen a deck with that back before. I would be interested to know what edition or which company published it.

That's the third one in the last month or so on eBay. At least this one has all 78 cards. (Hopefully all 78 are different. :))
The previous two decks only had 77.

78 cards and a blank one. not sure of age, came with stuff from the 1940/50's book looks old but is undated, great illustrations.box is in good condition too. postage is charged as near to cost as I can estimate and is for the UK ONLY, please email for costs if you are outside this area, International bidders are welcome but cash and paypal only please, bidders in the UK may pay by any means. Please ignore multiple paypal notices, these are generated by ebay, not me. If you have not emailed or paypalled in a couple of days I will send and invoice.
Apparently someone is bidding on the deck. It's up to $207 GB.

The posted photo of The Sun card marks it as a (1937) Pamela B
http://home.comcast.net/~vilex/SunComparison/main-Sun.html
The last Pamela B on eBay sold recently for over $500 USD. IMO that's too much for this printing.
I agree. A Pamela B is from 1937 and according to Holly's site is not the best quality printing.
I bought one of the recent decks on ebay. It was a Pamela C from 1931. It, too, is lower print quality than the Pamela A. But I am delighted with it. It was missing a card, too, but I promptly scanned the back and printed out a copy of the missing card for myself! LOL! And I sure didn't pay $500 for it.
The Pamela C, that i have, is apparently the deck that was the inspiration for the "Original Rider Waite" that USGames recently put out. The colors on my real one are far better and less pea-soupy than the USG version though. The yellows are brighter and there ARE blues, which the USG version doesn't have at all.
Holly's site and the Mantegna article which she links to at Tarot Passages give a great deal of information about the first editions of the Rider Waite. I have had this deck on my wish list for YEARS! LOL.
Love,
Rachel

You can thank me (you're welcome!) for getting the info to identify that deck onto the seller's web page. I had an e-mail exchange with him (her? - I've forgotten) that got me a jpeg of the Sun card and its vertical addition to the squiggly line. The seller added more pics after I explained the different printings.
BTW, I also did the same service for the seller who eventually got over $500 for her "Pamela B". In the course of our correspondence I found out that she has access to a RWS deck from 1914 along with a copy of Waite's PKT of the same vintage (!) Her verification is a sales slip from the store that sold them (yes, she sent me a copy.) She's not sure whether she'll put this online or try to sell it through private auction, but if anyone is interested in this possible "Pamela A" PM me and I'll let you know when/if she puts it on eBay.

Thanks, Fyreflye! LOL!
I would definately like to know when the Pamela A comes up, if it does. Not that I would be bidding, mind you. I think my luck with ebay has just about run it's course and can't afford any more major aquisitions. If I get a Pamela A, though, I might just have a "c" for sale! LOL!
Love,
Rachel

You are absolutely right, Fyreflye. This is a Pamela-B indeed. And it is the third one in a month that has come up on Ebay. It must be Pam-B time or so. And this is the first complete one I think. There was another that got sold privately that was also missing a card.
I also agree that $500 is too much for a Pam-B. I may pay it for a Pam-A though :-). Soooo.. fyreflye, if you hear about that Pam-A, keep me posted :-). I love the old Rider-Waites.

Though I won't necessarily respond to every pm or post here, I'm keeping track of all inquiries about the possible Pamela A deck. I'm considering e-mailing the seller in question to see if any decision has been made yet about how to market it. She doesn't own the deck or book herself so it's not her decision but she's a friend of the owner.

The latest addition to the "early" RWS decks offered by an addled eBay dealer is a worn, water-damaged University Press edition described as "1900 TAROT CARDS PAMELA COLEMAN SMITH WAITE." And it's in its "original" banged-up wooden box!! If this were in good condition with its box and lwb it might be worth $15 but two näifs have already driven this miserable piece of wreckage up to $10.50. That's eBay...

The winning bid for the "Pamela B" deck in the last eBay UK auction was 321 GBP or $753.16 USD. In the meantime the eBay auction bidding for the worn, water damaged University Press RWS deck claimed by the seller to be "1900 TAROT CARDS PAMELA COLEMAN SMITH WAITE" has reached $100.00. There's one -or maybe two - born every minute.
For those wondering about the possible auction for a "Pamela A": I e-mailed the potential seller and she tells me the owner of the deck and book is still considering whether to sell them or not.
Surely we could all find something better to do with our money.

Glad you posted this...I noticed that auction yesterday, but wasn't sure if it was on the level or not, and hadn't taken the time yet to try to ID the deck on Holly's RWS site. But you are right, what this person is selling is a complete piece of junk. Pity that someone out there is going to pay upwards of $100 for it.

I got a university press RWS a little while ago. In very nice condition, (my first ever RWS). £5.
Not in a box like that, though.
The red box with the High Priestess looks very old. Anyone know how old?
Is that the same as the red box that was with one of the genuinely old decks?
And does the wooden box have anything to do with it? or is that just a red herring?

After an unexplained drop in the maximum bid from $100 to $67 yesterday the UK dealer with the "old" University Press deck today cancelled his auction because of "errors" in the listing. Somebody must have clued him.

Was it a UK seller?
I didn't see it on Ebay UK, I must have missed it!
Good that it's gone. It's a shame when people sell things that are not what they say they are.
I know, buyer beware and all that, And buyers should really research what they are buying before falling for the 'vintage' or 'rare' con, but all the same it would be nice if sellers could list things honestly.

There was a discussion going on about this particular auction on one of the mailinglists and quite a number of people mailed the seller and also bidders about this mistake. And one member withdrew his bid on the deck (that is why the drop) and all of this resulted in the seller contacting Holly Voley, hearing the truth about the deck and cancelling the auction. Sometimes it is good to actually speak up in public.
