Sherridan. A very 70's deck.

Last week I got an old deck off the net, I think it must be the ultimate 70's deck.
It is called the 'Sherridan deck' and it is rather old (and scruffy). From the early 70's.
The art is so incredibly 70's it's unbelievable. Even the box is wearing flares and an afro.
Everything about it is redolent of that era. Lovely!
It's an odd old thing, the cards are very thick, and the LWB is just a fold out sheet of paper that has been unfolded so much it has fallen apart and been stuck back together with sellotape. Then the sellotape has dried up and fallen off...
The poor old thing.
But it's so funny and sweet, it's obviously been well used and well loved at sometimein the past.
And no one else wanted it but me.
But I like it, dispite (or because of) it's scruffiness.
And the weird thing is,I am sure I have seen it somewhere before. But I can't remember where. I have never owned it before. It just seems really familiar.
Does any one know anything about it?
I searched for Sherridan, but nothing came up.

Ha! Yes, I just checked on the box. One R.
My life would be so much easier if I could spell!
Right, there are a few posts here about it.
One says it is the ugliest thing on the face of the earth!
A few mention money.
But if this is so I don't understand why no one else wanted it.

My denim bellbottoms faded into the day-glo paisley sunset
long ago, but I can still speak 70's if you need a translation
for the little white book ~ we called them: Bummers, Man!

I would not say they are the ugliest deck, different but not ugly. The Knave of Batons kind of reminds me of the Riddler in Batman (the series). Nice lttle piece of nostalgia you have there.

The Diamond Tarot came psychedelically out in 1997.
Some few may have just then been emerging from the
fog that was the 1970's :smoker: or was that the 60's? ;)

The Sheridan Tarot was used to illustrate Douglas' classic book on tarot, which I think originally came out in the 1970s. If the images seem familiar, that might be why. The deck overall seems to be a really interesting period piece!

Yeah!
The riddler, it'smost definately him. How funny.
To be honest I have to say I am a little weirded out by all this.
Not what I expected from some wacky old 70's deck!
As you probably know (cos I've mentioned it on here) I am into 70's & 80's decks. For me this is a sort of nostalgia trip back into my youth.
The fact that the Sherridan deck appears to be collectable and possibly worth a lot of money is really odd. It was not the reason I bought it, and will probably never make a difference to me as I bought it because I wanted it, and not to sell.
Also, mine might not be worth anything anyway. The box is all but dead, the fold out sheet is definately dead, and some of the cards are slightly creased. I did not realise how bad they were when I bought them, only when I recieved them. Bummer! :D
I must have seen some of the cards in a book somewhere, cos only a few seem familiar to me.
What a strange thing to happen. I am a bit lost for words.

Oh yes! I have heard so much about the 'Hoi Polloi' since I started coming here.
I never even knew it existed before. I have been and looked at pics on Tarot garden and here, but have never seen a deck in the flesh.
I have seen a few for sale on Ebay dot com, but never here in the UK. I get the feeling it was never published here.
£6 is well good though. well done!
Maybe I'll get my hands on one someday.
I saw one of the 'Fronteras' recolourings of the RWS for sale today, the purples in the pictures reminded me a little of what I have seen of the hoi polloi.
So many decks... so little time!

Lillie, if you do like the Hoi-Polloi keep an eye out for it on E-bay uk - that's where I got mine from.
I think it's often billed as just 'Tarot deck' - mine was described as 'Vintage tarot deck' - the name Hoi-Polloi was nowhere to be seen but I recognised the cards.
Do you have the Morgan Greer? It's got a very retro 1970s feel to it but it's still very much in print and available.
Love
Sulis xx

Yes,I have thought of the Morgsn Greer.
I have been looking out for an old Morgan deck to come up!
I picked up an old Morgan Aquarian a while back. That's a particularly nice example of 70's art.
Also these old decks often seem to be in nicer boxes than their modern counterparts.
The Aquarian has this lift off lid, and I have seen a Morgan Greer in a box like that, but that was in the USA.
If I ever get round to a 1JJ Swiss I'll look for an old one in a box like that, or in one of those odd wooden boxes I've seen a few of.
I have a bit of a box fetish!

Dear Lillie and all,
I also found my first deck. Major Arcana only of The Pop/Rock Tarot Calendar of 1972. It is really cool when a piece of yourself comes home to rest. I really like the Aquarian and Palladini because the art work is similar to my first deck. But, I can't get past those nasty swords sticking out of the poor slob in the 10 card. Can't you only die once? I keep thinking that I should buy a deck and color him out or something.
Oh, and by the way Fulgour(sp?), there is a saying that if you can remember with accuracy any part of the '60's or the '70's, you weren't really there (tease, tease). Now who do you suppose moved my mushroom garden?
