I don't have a working deck yet. After years of reading and my last working deck going the way of edward scissorhands I'm trying to "break" in a new one.
I went out and bought the Universal Waite and the Goddess deck. I love them both. I put them in pretty little bag (Goddess has a YSL bag.. she's spoiled). I figured I'd connect with one and journal with it a little bit just to get back into the flow and get to know it. But I'm finding myself carrying both decks around like woobies.
To top it off.. my golden and fey should be arriving any day now. I have this feeling I'm going to fall in love with both as I can see myself using either one as a main deck. I'm in a qaugmire.
I've had plenty of decks in the past and never had this indecision of which deck I connect with. I'm turning into a deck slut. I'm loving them all. This isn't going to help me connect with one! I can't exactly carry 4 decks around with me and I'm looking forward to being monogamous with one.
I keep putting one or the other in a drawer and then find myself going back and taking it out and bringing it over to where I am to hang out with me.
I'm going through a fairly big upheaval in my life right now with my boyfriend of a few years moving out and going to another state. It's the right thing to happen but change is change. A little tricky to handle. I'm thinking maybe it might be causing all this weird indecision. I just hope next month I'm not found wandering around aimlessly naked with 20 tarot bags taped to my body.
Anyone have this problem before?

I went through a mad buying phase after getting a raise a work. Now I've calmed down a little bit. Buying new decks makes us feel good and shopping is my drug of choice.
I know what you mean about having too many decks to give any one proper attention. I actually carry two or three decks around with most of the time, and pull them out whenever I have a free moment at work or wherever. I can't be monogomous and I don't want to. I don't think there's a problem using both the UW and the Goddess. They have similar imagagry so you can avoid confusion. I also enjoy getting another take on the same ol' same ol'. I'm not familiar with the other two, but from what I understand the Fey is also loosely RWS based. Soooo, I don't think it's a problem using all of them. Have fun with your new decks, but for goodness sake, remember to eat something! :)
Peace,
April

Most members here have gone through a MAD deck buying spree. Mine lasted almost a year. Well, shucks, you can get them so cheap on eBay! So this being a crazy time for you, I advise you to make a clear decision to 2 per week, 6 per month, to not indulge the buying urge until life feels more settled..whatever works for you. Or throw caution to the winds and fully indulge in the madness.
I will add that I now own about 90 tarot decks and 20-30 oracle decks. I love them all. I've traded away the ones I didn't like so much (another good way to keep total status quo).
As I just said to elf on the phone, I know that I was meant to be inundated with all kinds of decks in the last year, for growth and exposure, but due to my own upheavals it was perhaps just the tiniest smidgen more than was necessary. :D
And I mean tiny!
At any rate, if you want, you can just come look at mine sometime, instead of buying all your own. :)
Welcome to the forums, fellow masshole. (I just LOVE that Mainers call us this. They are such Mainiacs. ;) )

saw the term masshole being used, so I just had to be a part of this thread! Hi!!
I am a former masshole, now living in CA!! hello and welcome to ATF if I haven't greeted you already in new members forum.
Gosh, I must be on the other end of the spectrum with only 2 decks! Tho, I do carry cards around with me a lot, sometimes the whole deck (Thoth) or sometimes just a few cards in my pocket. I just started carrying around some of my new Sakki Sakki, I guess I felt beholden to my Thoth, like it would be "jealous"! Being a member here, I can see myself getting into the whole collecting thing! I do have a 2nd Sakki on the way, it's my first collectable deck, one I will not be reading with. It's a limited edition deck, so I figured I should get a 2nd deck, as I am brutal with my decks and have almost stained the backs of my sakki several times just reading with it!
I don't think your deck buying sounds like a bad thing at all, there are far worse things a person can do during times of upheaval.

I'm desperately trying to keep my Tarot buying under control, though it seems like my habit is quite tame comparitively - I've acquired five decks in a month, but two of those were gifts. I've decided that when I go on holiday next week I am allowed to buy a maximum of two decks. I'm recovering from depression and in the last year I've gone through phases of retail therapy fixated on different things. Initially it was books and CDs (because Borders was a place I felt safe) and more recently it's been perfume oils and tarot cards. I haven't got to the stage of carrying decks around with me, but I do experience great indecision sometimes when I want to do a reading. Last night I just couldn't decide between the Goddess Tarot and the Tarot of the Cat people. I get on better with the Cat People but I feel I ought to pay the Goddess more attention (and what about my Bruegel, and Mythic and Golden decks...).

I have been collecting for about 10 years, and each new deck adds another tick of confusion. I need to go through my decks and revaluate which ones I should keep. There are some that I have never read with, I just love the art work. There are others that I couldn't read them no matter how hard I tried, and a few that I just plain do not like. Before I found this site I would buy a lot off the internet without being able to see pictures of the cards and ended up with some UGLY decks. (THANKS AECLECTIC) However, I find that I will read with a new deck a few times and then usually go back to the Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot. It is a tried and true friend. I will sometimes lay out the same spread on the same question with two different decks and it is interesting on how much more insite this can give you. However, it has also confused me a great deal at times as it appears to have conflicting messages.
I am just plain addicted to new decks.

Heehee Masshole. I hear that allll the time from my out of state buddies AND my Maniac dad.
I went out today and bought 3 yards of beautiful velvet that is very soft and not stiff.. in pale pink, salmon pink and salmon red for my new favorite decks, along with the ribbons and ties and beads so I can make myself some bags. I love making their little houses!
I carried my Goddess deck today with me. It's a sad day because my boyfriend moved out but there's a feeling of feminine strength in the cards. So much so that it's been a comfort.

On yeah. As in, ever since I took up with tarot several years ago! The quest for the perfect deck is one that never really ends--at least, that's the way it's been for me. (If I were more artistic and had the time, I'd make my own.) But first, your decks: The Goddess and the Universal Waite. I bought the Goddess deck about a year and a half ago, and while I like it, it just never turned into THE deck for me--meaning, the deck for self-analysis and reading. My guess is that you'll find the Universal Waite deck easier to work with, only because there's so much out there on the symbolism in the RWS-type decks. Rightly or wrongly, I've come to think of RW as The Golden Standard, so to speak, of tarot. But of course, ultimately, it's about which deck speaks more to you.
As for me, I'm getting more and more into RW-based decks these days, as the reading I've done has steered me more and more in that direction. After years of looking for the perfect deck, I think I may have finally found one that comes about as close as is possible: the Spiral deck. I bought it last night, and I simply LOVE the symbolism and the artwork. The Fool is a little disappointing to me for some reason, and there are a few imperfections, but it's pretty close.
Good luck finding "your" deck!
