Does anyone have this deck? What do you think of it? The artwork seems to be middle-of-the-road, but a Saint deck might be handy when reading for "Christians." Is the text give insights into the saints and how they might connect with tarot?

Hi, FaerieStorm (like the name, by the way!). I have this deck, and actually have it up for trade. The book does give detailed insights into the saint, his or her story, and his or her relation to the card. As a recovered Catholic, I had some disputes with Place's assignment of saints, which is why I'm trading it. However, the artwork, I think, is lovely. Very strong and crisp, and I imagine that, in general, Christians would be more comfortable with this deck than with, say, the Thoth. I add "in general" because when I was a Catholic, we'd come out of church some evenings to find pamphlets stuck under our windshield wipers advising us we were all going to burn in Hell because we were idol-worshippers or some such nonsense.

I just got this deck and really like it. The cards are quite lovely. I like Place's artwork a lot. He has a very clean style. (Almost cartoonish, but not in a bad way!)
I am not a Catholic, but I am a Christian and for me, the saints are wonderful examples of people who were in deep relationship with what I call God. That is inspiring to me. The book describes the saints in good detail, which means that the deck is useful even for someone who might not know who all those saints are. It may be a less intuitive deck for some, since you really do need to know who the saints are in order to fully appreciate the cards.
Since I just got the deck, I have not had a chance to read with it... but I am going to add it to my rotation of working decks and see how my clients like it!
I myself find it lovely.

Here is a recent thread on Tarot of the Saints:

I'm not a Christian but I've always loved the art and iconography surrounding the saints. Owning this deck was a natural extension of my interest. It's a lovely deck though it does require a learning curve. However, the book is well-written and very informative.

I would never suggest the "Tarot of the Saints" by R. Place as a beginner's tarot deck. But as an interesting deck that can carry one into unexpected places and strongly encourage some serious tarot study, it is great! The book that comes with the deck may be a little heavy for some at first, but will reward sustained effort.
One feature of his work I've never seen a comment on is that the clarity and uncluttered nature of his images is very "direct"; there is nothing romantic or "cute" about them. There are no distractions; Place gets right to the point, as it were.
To be honest, I guess I'd have to describe myself as a FAN of Place's work. I have four decks by him (Angel, Saints, Alchemical, and Buddha) and look forward to the next. I also have his new book on order, due out shortly. Thus far, all things Place have been pleasing!
