I came across a French theatrical tarot
http://www.playingcardsales.co.uk/cards/moreimages/11092_6_tar_comediens_francais.jpg
and after researching the Dotti Maria Stuarda (double figure) tarot with French pips, discovered the scenes of the majors and characters of the court loosely seemed to be personages depicted in an opera of Maria Stuarda by Gaetano Donizetti, first produced in the La Scala of Milan on December 30, 1835.
The other tarots that I can think of offhand with theatrical links include the Norman Losche and the Cosmic Tarot...and I guess there are various comic/movie/anime tarots.
Has anyone come across or have opinions on interesting tarots such as this?
Thanks and very curious for fanciful diversions...

Hmm, the only one that came to mind immediately is the Dario Fo tarot (which I have, it was a lovely gift from a friend). Dario Fo's work is influenced by Commedia. The deck is here:

There must be others surely? Very interesting question Cerulean.

The last post in this thread was by me, I remember reading the intro card with the name of the artist and the exhibit for the paintings, for the Festival of the Blue Moon....
-----------------------------------Cerulean's note----------------------
It was based on an art exhibition...
done at the festival of the Blue Moon in Italy, it seems. When you receive it, there will be a beautiful card with information about the exhibition and a small foldout telling you about the 'archetypes.' It's in Italian, but I do not believe you will have trouble with it.
There will also be some information about a performer known for puppetry shows, I believe.
Even though I found it lovely and distinctive, I have some other lit-based decks, so it went to a special trade.
I think with your storytelling bent, you will probably do many wonderful things.

And maybe the Tarocchi di Cinema, also a Lo Scarabeo majors only?
