I just recieved my first two decks in 13 years (drifted away from tarot, now returning to it). Spent some time with them today and I think I'll get along with both quite well. There are dozens of threads on DruidCraft, and deservedly so, but I haven't seen a recently active thread on the Celtic Wisdom deck - so just out of curiosity, what does everyone else think about it? Pluses, minuses, types of readings you use it for, etc?

A thread on first impressions: new deck
Here's a thread about trimming it!

I got the Celtic Wisdom a few weeks ago, so I don't have it long yet and had not anticipated it either - I was surprised no one else had a bid for it on ebay.
I have not had a chance to delve in it deeply - but I would say a big plus is the artwork and the lovely colours. I also love the stories in the book. Some stories and people sound familiar, others not, but it is another incentive to read up more about those.
I am not too sure about how this deck is organized though - all the majors have been renamed and the suits have also been renamed and some cards have different readings. I think it will work best if I forget about the whole system of tarot and use the cards intuitively.
I also know there are people who use this deck mainly for meditation.

thanks for the thread links, Imagemaker. Need to brush up on my forum-searching skills I guess! :)

I agree, it's a beautiful deck, very vibrant, and the overall style is pretty true to the original Celtic art - bright colors, lots of known/identified knotwork patterns and god/goddess icons, which is a nice bonus.

I think the only thing that *really* throws me off is the fact that Matthews assigned a word to each number in the minors - I understand what she was trying to do, but I think it winds up a distraction... I can deal with Wands = Skill, Cups = Art, Swords = Battle and Pentacles = Knowledge, but the whole "Elopement of Skill," "Dialogue of Battle," thing is trying a little *too* hard for my tastes.
I'd entertain the idea of trimming it as it seems several have done, but physical issues preclude me from being able to do so on my own and I take my tarot far too seriously to entrust that kind of job to someone else ;)

It does seem like it would be a fantastic meditation deck. I'll be interested to see what kind of readings I get from it.

Let us know how you get on with your deck, seanchai.
I have only just started with this deck as well, so I am interested to see how someone else studies and uses this deck :)
