I want a new deck--I want one that will really stretch me, make me work, I'm getting very jaded and want a change. Anybody recommend one for me please ? Mary.

A Marseilles style deck will stretch you. I've had mine for all of 4 hours and it's already making me work for interpretations!
The Majors are similar in many ways to RWS and clones, that being because Waite drew on the Marseilles for much of his Major Arcana imagery. However the pip cards are throwing me for a loop. I don't want to look at the LWB (not that it's any help anyway....) so I'm really working on ways to draw the meaning out of my own mind, without picturing the same card from other decks. So far I've started pairing the suit meaning with the Major Arcana of the same number.
I really got thwacked with the reading I did for myself with it earlier (I've got the Ancient Tarot of Marseilles by Los Scarabeo) It was one of those intensely painful readings that ended up making me look at the situation from a whole new perspective. It's what I needed!

I agree with Gwynne, Mingbop.
But I don't think it's customary to use reversals when you read with the Marseille  I don't know anyone who does.
The Ancient Eygyptian is a beautiful deck as well.
Have fun choosing. Why not look at all the decks in the deck section of Aeclectic? There are scans and reviews of most decks.

Let's see. I find my Thoth tarot very hard to understand and very challenging. There is a huge book on it with all of the links to astrology the quabbalah and its surprisingly titled the Book of Thoth :) If you just look at the cards, there are so many little things you wouldn't have noticed before. Personnaly, I hate the Thoth, it just doesn't connect with me. That's my recommendation if you really want to go the extra mile if you don't have it already.

mike, I only have 2-3 decks at any one time, I'm not a collector. the one mainstay that I can't do without (shut your eyes, purists !) is my own old cards which were £5 out of woolworths about 200 years ago ! Mary. Blushing!
Ok I iwll go and lookat thoth. It sounds like a speech defect.

Mornin' Mingbop!
I have to pick up different decks every once in awhile or I get bored, but it's so hard to decide where to go, and I've wasted money on decks that just didn't work for me (only once -- the other dud I have in my collection was a gift, but the spendthrift in me thinks it's wise to get advice)...
I'm fairly fascinated with the Marseilles decks lately though I haven't bought one. The imagery has all these intriguing French/historical elements, and I keep thinking it would be really interesting to learn them. The Ancient Egyptian, too, though I really don't like some of the contemporary versions. So I echo what's been said before. But only get one that seems to enthrall you when you look at the images (and thank heavens we have them on-line!). If they don't grab you somehow, move on to another deck...

Hi Mingbop
I recommend the Marseille as well. There are two threads banging about at the moment - one by me and one by Holmes - they may be some help if you are still interested.

Oracle cards? I'd say the Faeries Oracle. They are challenging in that they will open up parts of you that you never new existed. And try getting the Faeries to shut up....

Have you thought of the Shining Tribe tarot by Rachel Pollack? The cards are "primative" in style, and you may not like them (I don't like the art style!!) but the symbolism is great. They read clear and deep and solid and in ways you'd never expect...they'll stretch you. The book that goes with them is a treasure all on it's own.
To my mind, this is very close to being a sacred deck, if such a thing exists.

I'd have to agree with Gwynne about trying an Ooracle deck. I'm a bit partial to the Faeries Oracle as well, but I think anything that is a little 'out there' might be just what you need.
I too get a little resentful of the traditional system at times, so I relate to your description. I'd suggest trying something fun and different and unlike anything you already have at home. What are you using now and what are you sick of?

Haindl - you may like it Mingbop - each suit is from a different culture, one of which is the north american indian.
Some really diverse mythology behind it and inspirational images.

The navigators of the mystic SEA is a deck that is for experienced readers. Its quite nontraditional but it has amazing artwork that takes time to get used to, but really opens your eyes. The companion book is an interesting book too.

I'm starting a study group for the deck mid may so feel free to look at the threads and chat--i wanted to start it for the appreciation for the deck since some people do not like it because of how much symbolism is in it.

Tarot of the III Milennium is a friggin' trip, but it's not for everyone. Sometimes it only gives me a headache.
I suggest a Thoth, also, unless you've already been there and done that.
Peace,
April

Mingbop: There are a lot of choices out there, and some very challenging ones, IMHO.
The Navigators Tarot of the Mystic Sea has been mentioned.
If you wanted into a Kaballistic path, there is the "Tarot Cabalistico", that should be available from Alida, at least. It combines the Marseille deck with Kaballah. Also see "Tarot of the Sephiroth".
I have found both the "Kazanlar Tarot" and the "Egorov Tarot" to be endlessly fascinating.
Using a somewhat different system and with some amazing art is the "Bruegel Tarot" by Lo Scarabeo.
The "Margarete Petersen Tarot" has fabulous abstract art and waves of meaning.
There is a reason the "Greenwood Tarot" is so sought after.
As to Oracle decks, depending on the tradition and system you might want to grow in, there is the "Haindl Rune Oracle"(nordic), the LS "Karma Angels" deck(byzantine), the simple and lovely "Holitzka I Ching" deck, and the "Green Man Tree Oracle"(celtic). Any of these could prove very challenging to master.
Check them out, and enjoy!
Peace be upon you and all others who search.

instead of a new deck like the osho zen tarot, or jungain tarot, or pythorgorean tarot.
try instead using a new system such as numerology, or astrology or kabbalah, or colour, or something along those lines.
(the heart of the tarot for a counselor approach)
then as you study the system, apply them to your studies of the tarot then every reading you do.
you will see the tarot in a new way, and the system in the new way as well.
:)

MM ~ I agree, Marseilles forces you to THINK. Etteilla is also a challenge, as is Minchiate. A good non-Tarot oracle like Lenormand is also good, if only because there are no books in english and you HAVE to hash things out for yourself! BB, Stella
