I can't recall if someone told me or if i read somewhere, but i remember something about the Haindl deck being only for...advanced readers. Readers with more than 10 years of real tarot practice, because it was a deck too hard to use and all.
Recently i found the Haindl deck for sale...it's kinda expensive for my student pocket, but not unaffordable. My question is: can i, being a four/five-years only tarot student, use it? And more important: is it worth the money?
I particularly think the cards are amazing, as i'm very attracted to such...surreal images. It kinda reminds me of Thoth, specially because i was also told that deck was 'too complicated for begginers' and now it's the one i use most.
I don't know...any ideas?
Love,
~Yuko

It was my first deck.
I don't know if I would have been so strongly affected by Tarot if it had not been the first one I used. I found the images so strong, and the ideas so much a mirror of my life at the time.
I don't know if it would be good as a first deck for everyone, but it is a strong deck and well worth using.
As I mentioned in the thread "Haindl Tarot: opinions and observations" it is not the deck I use the most, as its themes seem "bigger" than those of most other decks.
If you're attracted to it, you'd probably be missing something if you didn't get it. You've been using tarot for five years? The Haindl is a deck with big themes, but I don't consider it a hard deck to use, and I can't see there being justification for some sort of timespan before which one can use it.
Sometimes it is compared to the Thoth, and in some ways the comparison holds but it is really a thing unto itself.
Maybe if you are meant to use it, you will find it when you need it.
The Thoth is my second favorite after the Haindl, and I don't see why it couldn't be used by beginners either. Athough, to be honest, my main deck in the sense of getting the most use around the time I first started was the Russian of St. Petersburg, which is more RWS based.

You too??? It was also my very first deck. My Haindl was the deck I learnt Tarot on.
And I can only say starting with a deck that is not classified as a beginner's deck did not do me any harm. I have great readings, adore my Tarot, and am up to 12 decks now. :-)
If the Dreamer and I could learn on that deck, there is not reason for you not to work with it after 4-5 years of Tarot work. And BTW, it is a very beautiful deck, not just for the images, but also for the beauty of the messages it has embedded in the cards.:-)
It really is not as complicated to learn as you are making it sound. The deck has some Thoth influences in it, but it is much easier to learn than the Thoth deck. And if you get the books that Rachel Pollock wrote on the Haindl deck, and they are probably the best way to learn the deck, I would suggest the two volumes (she has one book out on the Haindl Majors, and a second book on the Minors). Rachel also has a one volume book out on the deck, but it is not really as good...

Very welcome. That's why we're all here to help each other. :-)
It is still a deck I like very much. It is caring, very interested in preserving the environment, and in cooperation...I love the I-Chings on the cards. I always find them really accurate.:-)
