Hello,
I realise I should have searched and I am probably naughty for asking, but I do not get much free time and would love some sincere response regarding this deck.
Feeling, working, reading
Is it as inspirational as it seems?
I am looking forward to your responses!
Basically, as I mentioned when I joined, I have been a reader for a while, stopped reading for a while, bonded with the mythic deck and am needing something 'more' I am an astrologer, not that that is important, but that may resonate with some of you.
basically, a deck must babble when you hold it...so recommendations are appreciated, thanks :)))))

This is a strong deck and I know many readers here who have deep and strong readings with it, many here on the forums.
I have never tried to do a reading with it, but have often used this deck (along with the TAO Oracle by the same artist) for my daily meditation cards.
It is a deep deck, and I don't think you would be disappointed.

It's a great art deck, but I think the author couldn't make a decision on whether to make it a RWS-based deck or an oracle deck. Many of the cards give a zen interpretation of the RWS meanings (a great idea!), but some of them veer off into oracle land like the 10 of Swords which depicts a fable about lions and camels by Nietzche. I like RWS-based decks and also oracle decks, but not a mixture of the two. I can see it being used as a daily card deck though. Sorry folks, I know this is a popular deck.

Only you can know if a deck 'babbles' when you hold it. For me the OZT is the only deck that resonates with my personal values and the only deck I use as a mirror deck for myself. Much as I love some other decks for their artwork, their history or their absurd occult theories, the OZT is the deck I'd keep if I had to give up all but one. But only you can tell how it will work for you and you won't find out except by owning one.
BTW, there'll soon be a chorus of dissenters here raving about that awful man whose philosophy permeates the deck. Everything they know about him they learned from watching tv. Some of the greatest decks (perhaps all of them) were designed by scoundrels and frauds. Osho was far from perfect but he knew the One Big Thing these folks will never know. It's there in the deck.
Agree!!! Osho the man was not perfect (who is?!), but he did have a lot of valuable wisdom, a lot of love for this world, which is all reflected in this marvelous deck. I have studied Osho for years and have found him to be both profound and helpful in numereous ways, it saddens me to hear when people readily dismiss his legacy out of ignorance and tabloid influence without having ever read a single book of his.....but blessed be, we can't educate everybody.
As for the deck itself,- I started reading with it 7 years ago and have found it both inspiring and deep, serious and fun, all the layers and nuances that one could possibly ask and wish in a deck. I don't know if it would be deck I would keep if I had to give up all but one, but it would definitely be among the three decks I'd deliberate keeping!!!! :)
I believe you would not be disappointed getting this deck. Enjoy!!! :D

Interview with Ma Deva Padma, creator and artist of the Osho Zen Tarot deck:

_________________
Some of the cards of the Osho Zen Tarot are some of the most striking tarot cards around.
It's good to have one or more post-RWS tarot decks in one's stable.
For me personally, this is more a meditation deck than a reading deck. But that doesn't mean one couldn't use it for readings, as testified to by posters above.

Thank you SO MUCH for starting this thread! I just purchased the Osho Zen Tarot only yesterday (April 16, 05), and I already find it breathtaking. The vast majority of the images are wonderful--only one or two I don't care for. I find the suits to be unique, as well: Water, Fire, Clouds, and Rainbows. The neat thing about the suits is that if you don't care for the clouds and rainbows thing, the cards themselves do not have the suit names printed on them, so you can call them what you want.
Though I am not a follower of Eastern Thought, The OZT is a great addition to my collection--I think you'll enjoy it too.

I too recently purchased this as a second hand deck and found it to be wonderful. I have tried not to read the book too much, as I wanted to really expand my own mind when looking at the cards, and have on initial perusal, found a depth that I can definitely explore when doing readings
Usually I am a stickler for the RWS, give or take a little depending on the deck I am using. These cards really talk to me with a different outlook and view point that can only advance my readings with a new lease of life, yet still maintaining a strong link with the method I have used for many years.
It will be interesting to get feedback from the first few readings I do with this deck.

Thank you all so much for the indepth feedback as I really appreciate it.
When I purchased my mythic deck, the sales person was trying to sell the Thoth deck instead to me, obviously the mythic babbled so we were meant to meet. I will definitely follow my instinct to add this deck to my stable.
Since then I have obviously read a great deal more regarding the Thoth.

Maybe rather than go through every deck I view and resonate with from online, perhaps I could ask for a general recommendation.
I shall tell you how I work which may help you help me :)
As much as I love the mythic deck, I have outgrown it. I have tried different spreads but it does not give me enough detail. I resonate by the question/picture and what we all resonate with, so I need more detail
Does this make sense? I hope so as you have all been so helpful and I thankyou for that :)

As I am primarily an Oracle deck reader, I love the Osho Zen Tarot deck. It's definitely a deck that I can intuitively read with. I think that's what attracted me to the Oracle decks in the first place. If you buy OZ and you don't like it (which is hard to imagine), I'm sure there would be zillions of people that would take it off your hands :)

Well, I clicked on Rusty's link (thanks Rusty) and read the interview with the artist and I was interested to learn that her (???) first tarot deck was the Rider Waite, which may explain some influence.
But which cards are supposedly like the Rider Waite anyhow? I thought they were all reasonably unique.

Pictorially, the R-W deck and the OZT deck differ enormously. However, if you look at the numbered minor cards (Two to Ten of each suit), you can often see that the OZT keyword for a card can be corresponded to a meaning inferrable from the RWS image for that card. Sometimes, it's quite a stretch, I agree; but it's there. However, the court card meanings are quite unique to the OZT, and the major arcana meanings sometimes correspond and sometimes not at all to the RWS images for the major arcana card. The OZT's reconceptualization is especially apparent in the major arcana cards.

I know there are a few threads around in the archives which debate the "tarot-ness" of this deck.
It is, and has remained for a few years, my favorite tarot deck. The readings are clear and dead on. Plus, someone who doesn't know tarot can pick up the message from a reading with this deck very clearly.
It is always my go-to deck, and my good friend.

I dragged this deck out once when I was sitting round a table with two of my sisters, my niece, and my aunt. None of them are card readers. I laid a couple of spreads and sat back and said....here, you tell me what these cards mean to you. It was amazing what they came up with.

oh northsea, we must introduce you to the quote function on this forum. lol
Forgive me if you already know...but I thought I'd share the secret ;)
It's easy, at the bottom right-hand corner of each post, you'll see the word "quote". If you click on it, it displays a screen similar to the post reply screen, only the poster's message will be displayed with some formatting characters. Anything that appears between [ quote ] and [ /quote ] will display like this. You can delete the bits you don't want and leave the bits you do want. Then, you can add your own bits.

Purple_scorp is a treasure! She also helped me to use the quote function and a few other tips that make life easier and communication clearer at ATF!!!!
I also have her to thank for my intro to the OSHO ZEN as I went to look at it on her suggestion and absolutely fell in love first with the artistic design of the deck! Maybe shallow I know but hey, the bookshop I went to wasn't "friendly" and had them in a cabinet under lock and key and all I could initially go by was the illustration visible on the front.
Then I saw the readings thread on it here at ATF and became more intrigued.
Next I went to the Osho website and it was a great day when I then went and bought my own Osho Zen deck! I hadn't felt so excited and happy in ages. It's a really good feeling don't ya'all agree when you do get a deck high on your wishlist!!!!
I find the deck a "deep" deck and it is taking me a slow luscious time to get to use it fully competently but I really treasure every minute spent with it.
I hope all your experiences with it are awesome...

I just moved, so I had a reading done for me(of course:-)), by an amazing and wonderful lady... And she used the Osho deck(along with an I-Ching deck, an animal oracle, and another one I unfortunately can't remember). But the reading was centered around the Osho, and it just blew me away, I had to run and get it myself! And it is a truly beautiful deck, I am so happy with it. Very peaceful, intuitive, and it somehow captures all of you, the whole picture, the grand scope - I find. And it has me interested in reading and finding out more about Osho...

I have to say this is one deck I am seriously thinking of getting a second of. (not something I usually do).
I want to have one deck with me as a travel companion as I feel it is the most insightful deck I have used to date. Not knocking the rest in my collection, as they are as beautiful, etc in their own right and also give good readings.
This though.... I reckon it has that little extra something I can't put my finger on.

Davina I appreciate the artistry and zen-istry of this unique deck. It gets beneath the roles I play to who I am, without all the superficial games and winning and losing. How is it the "most insightful deck" you have? Does it tell you about the real you? Or is it a different kind of "insight"?

Osho Zen Tarot is great. And I agree with just about every comment that the people threw out. It is humorous, insightful, deep, playful... etc...etc...etc... And the colors are gorgeous. Albeit, I do not like other cards as much (very very very few cards, that is). Overall, this deck is a must, in my opinion. But do as you wish. To buy or not to buy, that is the question...

Deva Padma will also be coming to the International Melbourne Conference in July this year... and have also checked with the main wholesalers as to whether any sets are left, but they are also all sold out and unable to be re-ordered at the moment.
Apart from eBay, what may be worth looking into are some of the smaller stores that may have a set left on their shelves.

I love this deck! Perhaps it's because I'm a Buddhist and so much of it resonates with me. However, I never use it for full readings (for those I find the Ancestral Paths tarot is best). But for short questions (such as what would be the outcome if I did . . . ?) I find it invaluable. Sometimes it's so accurate it makes me laugh in amazement.

Didn't hear anything about it being out of print.
The Online site of Osho gives several places to buy the Deck.
When I was in Holland I bought it through Osho Publikations which gives the deck for 26.50 EURO, and shipping costs WorldWide is only 7,05 EURO standard, and 10,80 EURO priority (Non insured). (These are the prices if the deck is 500 gr, which it is according to Amazon, but I do not know for sure, since I can't weight mine)
Might be worth a try. I emailed and phoned them, and they are very nice, and very caring, and I got the package in top condition and very fast.

I just looked at it and I find it very confusing. I don't have it but I think it would take a lot of studying to interpret it correctly because it doesn't have the names as regular tarot cards. I would be so confused if I had it. Just my opinion.

Honestly it is not that bad. (re: thought of having to study them for a period of time).
I always thought I could never work with anything other than the traditional cards. If you have an idea of what number correlates to what title in traditional decks you may find it possible to still use traditional interpretations. However, I do believe the key words on the OZ deck give a new and different perspective for me. I find I tune in to them, in ways I would have never thought possible.
This expands on what I would normally say when presented with each card. My readings are more 'fruitful' for it.
Davina
PS I know it won't suit everyone though, so you do have to go by your own instincts and intuition. Thankfully with so many decks around we tend to find one that resonates with us, even if it is not one that others take to.

Hi Mike,
I've heard of some OZT owners who have cut the borders off the cards so that they aren't influenced by the card's title. The reason why I like this deck so much is that I don't need to look at the book or study anything. This deck speaks to me intuitively. Davina expressed exactly my sentiments in her post.
I don't know if you read my post where I talked about doing a reading with my sisters and an aunty (none of which are card readers). I sat back and got them to interpret - solely off the picture and the card title. They had no trouble with it.

I've noticed that there a lot of comments on this thread relating to the "tarot-ness" of the OZT. I recently posted a question in the "Using Tarot" section, but I only got one response; so I'll ask it again:
Does anyone else have a problem with the Page of Clouds in this deck? Is it not the most unattractive and unlikeable card in the entire deck? I kind of understand how the image and interpretation relates to Zen and eastern philosophy (surrendering the mind, etc.), but I seems a little harsh.
What do you all think?

29 Apr 2005 |

*chuckle* this has become a large thread hasn't it!!!
well it is obviously a well-loved and respected deck, so a true testimony to it.
I have been absent as through the confusion that abounded with my purchase (I paid for them in advance) and you all know how you get that 'vibe' prior to 'something' happening and I said to my partner an hour before my store contacted me that I don't think this is going to happen for some reason, and it did not! I guess the whole experience sort of tainted it somewhat for me so part of me feels the deck and I would not have fondled each other the correct way!
So, I ended up purchasing the Medicine cards and have been working with them as an add on read with my main deck. I have to say they are providing what I wanted them to provide and the feedback has been positive and pleasing so no complaints.
If they cross my path one day I shall certainly look into it and contribute to the mentioned thread, but for now, I will just play with the animals.
Quite amusing as my friend and I are always cracking bad 'gas' jokes and she continually pulls the skunk *chuckle*

I showed these cards to a friend of mine who is a very qualified and experienced counsellor. She immediately wanted to buy a deck as she saw the benefits it would bring in her role. We discussed the way her clients could perhaps choose a card they think reflects what they are experiencing at the moment, which could open up the channels for further communication and exploration.
SHe is very excited about them, and I will wait to hear with interest how she gets on with using them in this way. Due to the fact they do not have any 'tarot' indications on the cards as such, she doesn't have to introduce them as a tarot deck.

Yeah, I guess if I had it I would cut off the borders. I don't really understand the words but the pictures are pretty cool. I just like to know the basis of the card and I like the usual words so I can compare to my own definition. I just like to fall back on the words every once and a while. I don't particularly like decks that have their own definition printed on the card like the thoth.
