Was the eBay deck called an "Original" Rider Waite?
I see lots of "Original" decks listed for GBP amounts,
and while similar to the standard RWS the "Original"
has some striking differences. You mentioned about
the backs of the cards... that would be a big clue.

The so-called Original Rider Waite is the one with no blue and thick outlining on the cards.

hi everyone thankyou, I think this is just the standard 1971 with blue and black diagonal checked backs, just thought it was interesting that they changed the blue background to green in the later 1993 deck ,and some of the faces have better definition on the 1971 deck and other cards better definition on the 1993 deck does anyone Know if there is a site to have a look at the original?

Hello.
I don't really know all that much about the RWS deck, there are lots of different versions. I have one with an ankh on pink backs!
I think you first had the 'original' deck, first published around the early 90's, and now you have the ordinary one that has been in print dince the early 70's and was published by both Rider and US Games.
Please, anyone, correct me if I am wrong.
You can find out loads about this deck, and about very early editions of it here;
http://home.comcast.net/~vilex/index.html
It is a brilliant site for anyone who want's to know about this deck.

Hi earth en lady,
It took me a while to get used to the sombre expressions of the Radiant but I can say now that it is my favourite re-coloured RWS. The colouring isn't garish or really that bright - its just right. :D

Now need the disabling thread to talk me out of the radient one;) There are two "recoulred" versions of the Rider Waite:
1990 The Universal Waite by Mary Hanson-Roberts
2002 The Radiant Rider Waite by (Mr.) Viginigus Poshkus
My humble opinion is: get the Universal version...
the Radiant is very good, but imagine it like this:
1. The "1971" Standard RWS
2. The "1990" Universal Waite
3. The "1993" Original edition
4. The "2002" Radiant version
See what I mean? The Universal has staying power. :)
