Hi,

you might want to consult these threads:

I have it and it was my main reading deck for 5 years - you'll need to invest some time in reading up on Greek Myths, but that's fun - and the companion book is not a bad place to start. The best Greek Myths book is Robert Graves'.

Enjoy!

Did you buy it in a set?
I bought the set with the book when I studied it I bought the workbook and did the exercices.
It's for beginners but that didn't stop me.
(I don't see myself as a beginner but I don't see me as a proffesional tarotist either)

I like the stories behind the cards and the way the minors ace to 10 make one story a suit.
It took me a long time to study it but apsolutely loved it.

moonlight  10 Apr 2005
Helvetica thanks for the links! I never think to search! I will try and remember that from now on! Sorry if it put you out finding those links for me. I appreciate your effort mate.

We meet again Snowy! Yes i got the set. I didn't get the work book though. I'm hoping the set will be enough for now.

Hi Moonlight.

I think it is a great deck. The continuing story for the minors made learning so much easier for me. I did buy the workbook but never actually used it (I'm not much of a color-inner-er). I've since lost it which is a shame. (Somewhere I have a photocopied version I made when preparing to color in some of the cards....)

It's a nice deck. The cards are a little thin for me, but I like chunky decks. I saw an old copy recently that was quite thick and had black backs intead of the more modern purple. I quite liked that version.

The book gives a simple explanation of the myths the illustrations are based on. I was already basically familar with them, so found it enough. I really liked that the symbols related to stories I knew, rather than unknown occult symbolism. There's no reversals with the deck and concordances such as astrology etc. are not stressed (although they are present).

I recently got a bag to suit it from shop.wiccked, and so I've dusted of the deck and have been using it again recently a little bit.

This is so inspiring! I want the deck now!!!! Amazon take like a week and a half to get stuff to Australia :(

I'm not into colouring in either so I dont think i want the workbook... although i'm sure it would consist of more than that. I think i will just go down the research path if need be and buy more books on mythology.

I have this deck. It was the first deck I ever had and what I learnt with. I love this deck. I feel the fact that it is based on mythology makes it a really easy deck to learn with and the artwork is quite pleasent. I have also given one of The Mythic deck and book set to my sister to learn with and she has found it really great although she lacks a bit of the maturity to not just do "will this guy ever make a move" readings. Oh to be 18 again :D

Emeraldgirl  11 Apr 2005
PS Amazon is shipping really quickly at the moment I got an order today that wasn't due til the 20th

moonlight  11 Apr 2005
Well I hope my deck gets here soon then! I love when Amazon are nice and are quick with the delivery :).

I am looking forward to this deck so much. From what I've read - most people pick it up fairly easily. I have to say that i'm happy that the myths continue from one card to another - i think that will make learning it a lot easier.

this is the deck I was taught with, and cannot bear to part with it even though it is not used as much these days. A great deck for learners

I hope I develope that kind of connection with the cards.

Junia  11 Apr 2005
I got lucky and found the complete set used (well minus the LWB) for $10.00 U.S. just before Moon Hare (Ostara's day) as a gift for my sweetie. He is into Greek Myths big time and I have a minor knowledge. Love the Medusa story in the minors and was kidding him about having to choose between the three goddesses Hera, Athena and Venus. Poor Paris-drop that apple and run for it! Also, the Cupid and Psyche story is very dear to me. Delightful deck. It has a lovely cloth drape to read on top of with the Celtic Cross Spread etched into it. The book is terrific for a deck book too. I hope you enjoy it! P.S. We kinda are used to Edith Hamilton's, "Mythology" probably not as good as Graves (loved his I, Claudius series on PBS), but easier to navigate.

In case anyone is interested: I found the deck-bookset for sale for AUS$19 in QBD The bookshop in the Myer centre Brisbane.

This was the first deck I owned and the only one I can truely say I can read with it. It is a lovely deck and as mentioned by other people the mythology makes learning the minor arcana so much easier. I adore this deck totally and mine is looking a little worse for wear these days...

I have the colouring in workshop book as well but am yet to deface this as I try to colour in the lines :D
- it is a nice idea that by using one's creativity that intuition will be increased.

the one complaint I get -
because it is a chunky deck my querants who shuffle it always comment on how awkward they feel and I feel it makes them quite nervous.
Means I always get reversals though. :)

leapylees  16 Apr 2005
The Mythic was my first deck too - I bought the set with the book and spead cloth thingy. I now have decks that I much prefer but the Mythic is definitely a good starter deck. I paid full price for mine (£18 I think) and am mildly irritated as I spotted it in a discount bookshop in town for £9 a few weeks ago. Grrr.... why didn't I think of looking there first?

persephone1  16 Apr 2005
Hi Moonlight,

I have not had a deck for 8 years and was mainly rider waite back then. I bought this deck and being heavily into astrology, the cards and I truly bonded. It is easier if you are already familiar with mythology and the cups myth of eros/psyche has always been a favourite of mine.

If I had to criticise, it would be on the major arcane. I was a touch disappointed but then that is simply as I become mesmerised with myths and I probably wanted a whole book on each card *chuckle* Well, since I am just getting back into it again it was indeed the perfect deck to rub for 10 minutes before purchase *blush*

Enjoy your deck!

Hi Ya' Moonlight,
Mine just arrived a coupla' days ago, so I've not had time to really get acquainted with 'em yet, but I'll let ya' know soon as I do!

Ilithiya  17 Apr 2005
I've loved all of mine. :)

Yup, multiple copies. I've had it three times previously, and each deck loved to be shared, so they'd go to people who didn't have a deck or who absolutely loved the Mythic.

My current Mythic, though, hopefully won't go anywhere. My DH gave it to me a few days ago, still practically new in box. :D He's had it for years, but only used it once or twice, and because he's been toting it around, it's special. I think I may pick up an inexpensive copy somewhere so I don't break the passing-on thing of mine.

Good luck! It's a great deck.

A fun deck, I got it because I want every deck connected with Classical Mythology.

The trouble with any theme deck like this is that people have certain expectations about who will be which card. For example many people have felt unenthusiastic about the various Arthurian decks because they wanted Morgan Le Fay to be on a different card. So of the Classical myth decks this has my least set of favorite majors. I understand why choices were made but I feel that the creatrix erred too often on the side of tarot tradition for my taste. This however makes it a great deck to learn with. Take the Magician for example. I understood why it was Hermes, the connection between Hermes/Mercury and the magician card has been well established. I understood the layout, though one review pointed out that reversing his hands is a problem for the As Above So Below axiom. But I didn't feel that there was much in the way that explored the nature of Hermes. The Olympus tarot went non-conventional and made Zeus the Magician, which struck me as odd, but it grew on me. That deck through convention to the wind and turned out well but it would be difficult as a learning deck.

On the plus side I thought the depiction of Persephone as the High Priestess was rather good.

I received my mythic deck a few weeks ago and fell in love with the art work straight away.

The design of the cards makes it very easy to learn from. Although I haven't been through many cards because i've been so busy!

The book is very simple (from what I've read of it) and I'm finding it very easy to connect the symbols of the cards with meanings.

I love this deck so much and am pretty sure I will be using it for a long time to come. It is so beautiful. I feel a really strong bond. I just love it!

Moonlight: I got the Mythic many years ago because I love mythologies.

Although a themed deck with a good companion book, knowledge of the mythology not necessary to read with the deck. Familiarity with the stories behind the images, however, can enhance the readings.

Emily  07 May 2005
I've been checking out the Mythic deck out on Amazon UK and there seems to be two versions - One the older 1986 print and the other a 2001 version.

The older version has the ISBN 0712630023 - is this a deck and book set? or just a deck?

I didn't realise until I read on here that you could get just the deck on its own but I know next to nothing about greek myths so need the book.

Any help would be appreciated before I click the order button :D

similia  07 May 2005
The 2001 version of the deck has a reversable back, so if you want that, get the new one.

In earlier versions the back was not reversable (the deck was designed to not use reversals, and there is no discussion of them in the accompanying book). Both backs are purple.

The very earliest version had a black non-reversable back.

The older book that I have is a hard cover one. (I think I bought the deck and book seperately.)

The deck and book set also contains a spread sheet with the Celtic Cross printed on it. The new book is softcover. They have them in local stores here very cheap at the moment ($19AUD for deck and book set). You can probably find them quite cheap around the place.

I agree it's a great deck and I could use a brush up with it. It has been sadly neglected by me in the excitement of getting other decks.

Free Flight  09 May 2005
I would love to join, please count me in :)

Vadella  09 May 2005
I was going to get the Mythic Tarot yesterday. I had walked away for two seconds to go to the bathroom and when I came back it was gone. :P I guess I wasn't meant to have it.

Fudugazi  09 May 2005
I love my Mythic, which is ancient and much worn! I much prefer the non-reversable backs, as I learnt to read without reversals thanks to that deck. My deck has a dark blue back with a gold filigree design and it is one of the most elegant backs in Tarot, IMO.

Sinner  09 May 2005
I also started with this deck and it was probably the reason why I decided to learn more about tarot.
I think its an amazing deck and as long as you're interested in the greek myths it can be a valuable and captivating resource.

Whats reaslly great about the set is, with the aid of the book, it helps you attribute a story to each card. It really helped me out when trying to learn the meanings for the first time.

I would also like to see a study group on this deck as its still my main reading deck even now it hasn't lost its utility.

The Dreamer  09 May 2005
A thread for a study group about it was started last week. [thread=41268]Mythic Tarot[/thread]

Emily  10 May 2005
I've gone and ordered the Mythic tarot and book - I love the tales of the Greek myths and have been doing a little reading up on them in the past few days - I think this will be a really interesting deck to get into. :)

Junia  13 May 2005
Hi anyone who is left:

First off--Thanks for the link Dreamer.

Second, Mythic Tarot Deck sets available at Overstock.com for $16.29, catalog #2621618!

persephone1  26 May 2005
I had not used this deck for months until two querents specifically requested readings from her. She is still a sensational deck and I am still a proud relayer for her.

Wonderful deck :)
