So, Lillie's thread inspired this one. I did some searching for a thread like it and came up empty so I figured I'd start one. Note: my search-fu is pretty awful, so if I missed one, do post it and that'll be the end of it. :)
Talk of the Sheridan and Lillie's professed interest in vintage decks has me all curious about other decks from the 70's and 80's. Shall we make a list for easy reference? In print or out of print, doesn't matter. Here are a few:
+ The Sheridan
+ Morgan Greer
+ The Aquarian
+ The New York Tarot (all pictures were taken between 1979 and 1986)
+ The Hoi Polloi
Others?
These are the times when I wish I had Kaplan's Tarot encyclopedias...

The Royal Fez Moroccan is another, with that orange box it had. And I believer the Cat People Tarot was from the 1980's.

Is 33 years vintage though? I wouldn't eat cheese that old, but wine or scotch might be good!

I have a Tarot of the Cat People with a copyright 1985 on the box and in the LWB. The cards have "1984 U.S. Games Systems, Inc." I bought it in 1987 or 1988.
The Hanson-Roberts Tarot: I don't see a date on the box, but the LWB says 1985. The cards say 1984 like the Cat People deck. I was surprised to see 1985 because I thought they came out in 1990. I was just checking to see if they maybe came out in 1989.

Could someone direct me to the museum which supposedly has the Visconti-Sforza? Is there a link w/pictures?
Thanks awfully!
I couldn't find a site about Accademia Carrara in Bergamo (which about 30 kms from Milano, where I live).
This site in Italian as a few pictures: http://www.sapere.it/tca/minisite/arte/nonsolomostre/tarocchi.html but not the complete deck.
The deck is also known as "Colleoni" from the family name of the former owner. The Colleony family sold cards to Accademia Carrara and Pierpont-Morgan Library (New York), keeping a few cards. So the deck is currently split in three different locations!
"The Castle of Crossed Destinies" by Italo Calvino is a collection of short stories based on this deck. I think it's fun :-)
Ciao

DoctorArcanus - Welcome and thank you for the web site. I didn't realize how beautiful the originals were. The reproduction doesn't do them justice. I added the site to my favorites. You'll love this site. Folks here are proof that in each and every country and state there are still wonderful people in the world. I'll also see if I can locate the book. I was just asking the other day about a fun Tarot (noninterpretive) book to read!

That's what I thought too, I got mine in Madison at a convention and I haven't been back there since 1989. I moved in 1990 and I KNOW I had it before I made the move. But it is from the late 1980's. Not overly vintage!

I don't think there are any really old Japanese decks. Not that I have heared off at least. But there is a long history of Japanese playing cards. And from what I hear, the Japanese are crazy about anything collectable anyway, especially cards. Not just tarot cards, but any kind of collectable cards.
Most of the decks I found in this list from the 80's are not really anime or manga though. Their art is quite different. Here is the list:
Ai No Tarot 1988
Aino No Tarot by George Domon 1989
Astrologic Tarot 1989
Asu ga Wakaru-Yasahil Tarot 1989
Gamieru Future Tarot 1989

The Deck from the film?
I always thought that was really ugly.
What is the 'game'?
Is it a game that is played with just the cards, (like tarrocco) or does it have other bits, like pieces or a board?
Have you played it?
Is it a fortune telling game, or just an ordinary game?
Sorry to be so nosey, but I get curious about things.

Start saving up. The James Bond movie promotional deck (basically the Tarot of the Witches, but with James Bond movie images on the box and the 007 cardbacks) is relatively cheap on eBay, but the James Bond Tarot Game set (consisting of James Bond movie promotional deck plus book and game components) went for $52.00 U.S. on a recent eBay auction.
Beware the eBay auctions that sell the deck "that was actually used in the James Bond movie" as they'd be selling an ordinary Tarot of the Witches deck.

Truelighth, I've had a look at a few on Tarotgarden's web site. Like the one from Moon Princess Himiko(sp?). A lot of them are majors only. Interesting that in a country with so little space, the Japanese like to collect things--less land more stuff maybe? Thanks for posting this list.
As for the James Bond Deck, somewhere in the threads on Tarot in the movies there is a discussion by TarotBear and others on exactly which Decks were used in, "Live and Let Die". Plus TarotBear actually has a Solitaire Doll!!! If you search for the thread be sure to take a look at T-Bear in his full magician's regalia! "Silly Old Bear"
