Hi,
To everyone who uses the standard size Thoth- do you also own the large size? Has it made studying them any easier? How much larger are they in reality? Does a lot more of the detail come across?
Many thanks
Regards,
Ian

Yes. Yes. About 4" X 5.5." Yes.
Be sure and get the 1986 A. G. Müller edition; it's the best printing so far.

Yes, definitely yes! Get a large Thoth even if you already have a small Thoth. I have both a large and a small, and love them both. I like the small because it is a useable size...but the detail is so much clearer in the large cards. When I got the large deck, I remember being surprised at all the things I saw in the cards that I'd never noticed before in the small cards. The large cards are so much better than the small ones for study purposes.

If you cut the borders of the large size Thoth, you lose an inch total of borders, no change in image size--so the size of the image is three inches by four and one half inches in the large size.
If your eyes are perfectly fine with the standard size and you feel the wealth of detail is adequately portrayed, than there is no reason to invest in anything larger. Sometimes for work/travel, I use smaller Thoth cards to keep the weight down.
My workday has tiny numbers and small fonts, so a larger image is a nice change. In a limited lighting situation at night, a nice larger size of tarot image is like having bigger pictures on a television or flat screen monitor.
In terms of color, I'm just using the green-tinged large deck as a change. I learned and used the AG Mueller one when I was first beginning with Thoth, about five years ago.
Best regards,
Cerulean

You're so right, Mari; the Mona Lisa and 'Guernica' could use a nice trim, too.

If you're going to use the Thoth as a study deck, it's good to have a large size one in order to make out the various details.
If you're going to use the Thoth on a macro rather than detail basis, going on general concepts from Book T (Golden Dawn manuscript) and RWS rather than intricate study of Crowley's system [ok, i realize that that's heresy to suggest such a macro approach], the medium size that you have is fine. I have both the medium and large sizes, but, personally, I prefer the medium size because the cards are not as flimsy and it's less hectic (at least for me) to have the images smaller when they're next to adjoining cards. As well, each card of the deck is so different in style and colour and feel, that it's helpful to have the cards smaller so that you can see these differences between the cards side by side. It sounds strange, but for me, with the Thoth deck, less can be more.
If you're going to get a large size one, you might like to wait for the much-awaited 'restored' Thoth deck that is soon coming out from Urania in deluxe and non-deluxe editions.

I have all three sizes of the Thoth and agree that when studying the deck its easier with the larger size - You can see details more clearly, small details that might be missed on the standard size deck. When I bought my large Thoth it amazed me at just how much I had missed when using my standard size deck. :)

1.Large size, gray borders (AG Mueller, gray borders)
http://www.wicce.com/thoth.jpg
Empress, Hermit, Universe...
I'll see if I can find online scans of the green border or smaller deck...then you can see what works...
2. Gray vs. Green, large size

3. Large size, green borders (U.S. Games/Llewellyn)
Moonchild posts different cards, Empress in green borders included--size of cards in relation to others can be gleaned...the lighter, faded coloration can cause one to miss details, as the two birds facing the queen on the undulating edges of the wavelike fronds on the top of the cards.

LOL  IDN your committment to a 5 deck maximum has not lasted very long!! :D
I say YES get the large one. There are many small details and hours of pleasure studying to be had in the larger size. Get yourself a pile of books to go with it, cause you'll want them all (at least I do).
(And since its the same deck as the medium size, you could convince yourself its not really a new deck...}) )

Many thanks for eveyone's help. I think I will get a large Thoth.
What I meant by 5 decks was 5 different Tarots. (if that makes sense?!)
I would love to get a large Haindl (if you can get these?), but would still consider that I have only 5 different Tarots.
Regards,
Ian
