Just an FYI they've got a tarot book and deck for sale together at Barnes & Noble for only $10. I just myself an acquarian but I'm one of those people that can never pass up a good deal. It may be a little bit of a chinsy deck and book (it says made specfically for barnes & noble), but who knows, 100 years from now it may be an interesting and obscure relic of the past like some old cracker jack prize. Also noticed they have handson book and deck for gilded tarot for $25.00. Seems like a pretty good price and unlike the $10 deal it looked really nice, really nice illustrations etc.
Just thought I'd let people know incase anyone's interested...

Yeah! I was just at a Barnes & Noble today and saw the Gilded Tarot... and was tempted to get it (o_O). But I was really looking for the Thoth deck and only had so much on me. They didn't have Thoth, so I ended up going to the Borders around my job (I swear, they must know me there by now since I go there so often on my lunch breaks during the week.).
I don't know if I saw that kit you were talking about in B&N. I know I saw a small kit called "Tarot to Go" or something at Borders. It had a very small version of the Mary Hanson Tarot.

The jonathan dee deck is not a very good deck. The art is lazy and ugly. The book is very basic.
The (mostly) un illustrated minors make it harder for a beginner, even though it is usually called a beginners deck!
Also it is not rare. In fact it makes up about a tenth of all decks on Ebay uk.
It as been published in various formats, including in a tin!
All in all, there are a lot nicer decks you could spend your money on.
However, this is only my opinion. Some people might like it. And that is just fine.
But I bought it onec and found I had totally wasted my money.

brh986: I think the deck is the same as this one packaged in a tin & listed in Aeclectic Tarot's deck directory:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/jonathan-dee/
The advantage to non-illustrated minor arcana (pips) is just that. No scenic pictures per se, but those representing the number of the suit & the objects corresponding to the suit or element.
This can encourage familiarity with the numbers & their correspondences from which meanings can be derived. Also promote the intuitive promptings; thinking outside of the known associations or parameters.
I like this deck as a change from the very detailed decks.

Barnes & Noble has had a variety of inexpensive deck sets for sale that I cannot find elsewhere, the Jonathan Dee deck among them. Most are really not bad, but not great either. What you think of them really depends on whether you like to work with plain pip cards or not.
My favorite find so far on a Barnes & Noble clearance table has been the Mystic tarot set (aka the Mystic Meg tarot, shown here: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/mystic-meg/). I love Caroline Smith's art...she also did the art for the Elemental tarot (the first edition, by the way, is still on sale at the Barnes & Noble web site) and the Runic tarot. I really love the majors of the Mystic tarot, but the minors are so-so...just plain pips.

I had the Jonathan Dee deck. I found it bland and moved away from it pretty quickly. However, I did look back at it many years later and thought it was not that bad; it got me kickstarted anyway. I gave it to a friend in the end. I have no idea what he did with it.

Take no notice of me.
If you like the deck than that is great. I just never did. I'm a bit prejudiced against it.
