In the old forum, I remember that Tarotbear posted something about playing Poker with the Tarot. I don't suppose Tarotbear, or anyone who has his original post printed out or something, would mind re-typing it for the benefit of those of us who never got to play the game!
Thankyou,
Kiama

I still have it somewhere- next time I type it out I'll save it to disk!
Be patient, please - my company is opening it's long-awaited expansion and I am expected to put in 60 hour weeks for the next 2 to 3 !

Kiama,
Thanks for the kiss. (Blush!)
And, no one around to care. But, if anyone saw it, they'd think, "What is a vivacious, intelligent young woman doing kissing an old wreck like that?
All I can think is, if you just happen to be bald-headed and if you wear a beard, someone might see a slight resemblance. Pathetic, that she got stuck with a grandpaw like that! people will say.
Well, I'm guessing that you have hair like flame and eyes like emeralds. Great-grand-daughter, my cards say.

O.K., O.K. - I will try to get this info to you by the weekend. I will also save it to disk so that I don't have to retype the whole thing the next time someone needs it ! LOL!! :P I wish I could 'cut & paste' to the forum, but that doesn't seem to work for me. :(

TAROT POKER
(This explanation was provided by Jana Hollingsworth in her comic strip "Pagan Cowboy Joe" and appeared in GREEN EGG, Yule 1991 issue)
If you can play poker you can play Tarot Poker. The Minor Arcana forms hands just like in regular poker.
The Major Arcana ranks above the Minor Arcana and higher-numbered Trumps rank above lower Trumps.
Major and Minor Arcana hands in ranking order. The Trump hands are marked with a star.
*Trump Straight Flush: any five Trumps in numerical order.
Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Knight, Page all of same suit.
Straight Flush; any five cards in sequence, all same suit.
*Imperial Four: Magician, High Priestess, Empress, Emperor.
Four of a Kind.
Full House: three cards of one rank and two of another.
*Trump Flush: five trumps not in sequence.
Flush: five cards of one suit. not in sequence.
Straight: five cards in sequence, not the same suit.
*Astral Three: Star, Sun, Moon.
Three of a kind.
Two Pair.
One Pair.
*Trump pairs beat Minor Arcana Pairs, In descending order they are:
World and Fool
Judgement and Justice
Any TWO: Sun, Moon, Star
Devil and Lovers
Temperance and Chariot
Hermit and Hierophant
Emperor and Empress
High Priestess and Magician
Fool is wild card.
Wheel of Fortune is wild only in combination with other Trumps.
>> All trump combinations have to make magicakal sense as the union of opposites. <<
{The author makes no mention of Strength, Hanged Man, Death, or the Tower. Does that make them a combination only with the Fool and Wheel cards? I know ZIP about cards playing. I read them- not play with them!-tarotbear}
Ladies and gentlemen - if you please- ANTE UP!

Hey all,
This is purely a gut feeling and I don't mean to sound judgemental... but does anyone else feel that playing poker with the tarot cards is kind of disrespectful to them?
Sorry if I am taking it all a little too seriously...

All my decks are playful. They lie in a house with three kids, (One of them me!) so they are quite regularly played with! My litle sister made a 2D doll's house out of my Robin Wood deck the other day, and used the court cards as people in the house. As far as I'm concerned, fun isn't a sin. And it doesn't bring any bad vibes eithr.
Think of it this way: You have a friend. (You're about 6 years old) Yu never play with that friend. That friend won't be very happy! It's the same wh my decks. They're like friends...
Just my tuppence worth!

Tarot STRIP Poker might be a little disrespectful...but you could use one of the more erotic decks and get away with it... LOL!!!

I agree with Kayne on this one. Not that I really care what anyone else does with their tarot cards, and I'm trying not to be judgemental! But I would not want to play poker with mine. ...........And I would probubly decline to play it with any other tarot deck either. I guess I feel that card games like that aren't their purpose, and also would be disrespectful of the cards' spirituality and higher purpose. But- when you think about it , card games May have been their original purpose?! Personally I find gaming or gambling of most sorts not good for society as a whole( my boyfriend would totally disagree,He Loves to gamble!) Although I don't mind playing card games with a regular deck of cards just with friends. But then , I guess a regular deck of cards can be used for divination too!

~Giggles~ I had to copy this! I do not know that I agree with some of those 'magical' pairings of the Major Arcana, wonder how that might work with Shadow card pairings (which by the way some of these already are) ... but hey! who am I to question the rules? *LOL*
I would agree with Tarotbear that if I were to play it would be with one of the decks I have designated as potential 'decoupage' material (meaning I did not find them to have real symbolism and would never use them for Tarot working).
I have a book that suggests another game, but it is a game that helps one get to know the cards not a gambling game. I will see if I can copy that into a new thread tomorrow. I will also post the name of the book and its information as it is probably my most favorite Tarot book I have ever read (short, sweet, to the point, and includes astrology, numerology, Qabalah, etc ...).
Love & Light,

ROTFL
From Playing Cards by Roger Tilley:
The earliest known original doument with an unarguable reference to playing cards is a manuscript, dated 1377. This document, written in Latin by a German monk in a Swiss monestary describes a pack of 78 cards used to play the game tarocchi or attuti or trionfi.
Tarot Cards were the original playing cards. LOL The modern playing card deck of 52 cards is the direct descendant! LOL The Joker is the Fool. LOL
