Something I have been wondering since I have been visiting this site is the question of music and the tarot.
When I meditate I usually have something playing, likewise for a reading. If I am reading for someone I get them to select the music. I find this helps to get the emotions focused on the question.
For my daily readings I always listen to something.
Here are some of the pieces:Miles Davis-In a Silent way; Brian Eno-Discreet Music; Debussy-Preludes, Book 1
I am really interested if anyone else uses music with the tarot, or conversely, if they feel they can't.

In the past two months since i picked up the tarot, i find it hard to meditate when there is silence. So yeah, i always make sure something is playing in the background. I don't know if the type of music matters when it comes to readings but i always play rave tracks like Fat Boy Slim.

It really depends what mood I'm in as to what music I listen to. When I'm reading a spread, I prefer to to have any music that requires me listening to the words, thus taking my concentration from the cards.
When I meditate, I love Pachelbel's Canon in D, and Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings...
But sometimes when I'm reading and meditating, I'll listen to A Perfect Circle, Papa Roach, Blink 182... It really depends.

Sometimes music, sometimes silence (but silence at my house isn't really very silent-kids, pets, farm across the street....) Overall, I prefer something soothing, especially in the evening after a long day. Vivaldi's 4 Seasons can be nice.

Barber's Adagio is a beautiful piece, and I have used it before for a reading. Along a similar vein, I can recommend Gorecki "Symphony 3", Mahler "Adagietto from Symphony 5",and Arvo Pärt "Cantus in Memorium for Britten".
I am sure you will like them. All of these are tried and tested for meditation and readings.

for some reason--the lyrics, perhaps--music by the police and/or sting seems to work very well for me, when i'm playing with my cards. when i'm doing a reading, i prefer the music to be instrumental and not too loud.
enigma, bach, enya, loreena mckennit, robbie robertson, wagner and the music of hildegaard von bingen are some that i'll throw on the player.

i'm only into listening to reggae right now. bob marley's One World just makes me so happy!
oh, and i like the Animaniacs theme song to get me going! it's a cartoon show about annoyingly clever animals. any moms out there know this tune? >grin<
but for reading i like it quiet, not that it is ever truly quiet in our age. nature sounds are ideal.

I have to agree with Wagner, particualrly the preludes to Tristan, Lohengrin, Parsifal.
I too prefer no lyrics, but Gorecki's 3rd Symphony has singing, but it is Polish, so I don't understand it literally, but I understand the emotions.
If you are not aware of this piece I really recommend it to anyone. It is one of the most beautifully sad pieces of music.

I like calm melodical music (without too many words) when I'm reading.
Especially when doing readings for others, I find that this tends to put people at ease.
My favourites are Enya (and other celtic airs), Ennio Morricone, John Williams (especially selected music from Star Wars), Peer Guint Suite, just to name a few.

I certainly agree with the calm melodic idea. Calm, steady emotionally music is important I feel.

I agree, seeker_11...I tend to listen to music that is in other languages, so my left brain isn't trying to follow the words of the song while my right brain is trying to read the cards!
Lately I've been listening to music from Cirque du Soleil because so much if it has a tribal or world music feel to it. Kind of gets me in touch with that collective unconscious. ;)
Peace,
Melvis

Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain" is a wonderfully ethereal album to meditate to.
and of course there is much classical that could be custom written for this purpose.
but i want to get a little off topic here.
does anyone know of any music written ABOUT the tarot?
there was a solo album put out by the guitar player for Genesis (Steve Hackett) back around '76 or so called "The Voyage of the Acolyte". it was his first solo album, and all the songs are named for tarot cards. it is very typical of the day, with lots of synthesisers, and very 'arty'. but it is pretty good (some beautiful guitar), and parts of it are very beautiful and mello. song titles include "The Tower Struck Down", "The Hermit", "Ace of Wands", "Hands of the Priestess", "The Shadow of the Hierophant", "The Star of Sirius" and "The Lovers". it's probably out of print these days, but i thought i'd bring it up.

i believe that someone connected w/ the rohrig deck did accompanying music for that tarot deck. i saw the ad in back of the full book for the rohrig. i've never found it or heard it tho so i don't know how good it is.
i think my favorite tarot reading music would be adaggio for strings by samuel butler, paschebel's canon, enya, loreena mckennit, yanni, kitaro, the fairy ring by michael rowling?, and other soothing classical pieces.

I completley forgot about Voyage of the Acolyte. A great prog lp!!!
Another, but far less inspired rock lp is Mike Batt's "Tarot Suite". Not very good. His tarot information is a bit off I feel.
Most tarot music is unfortunately in the New Age vein. I don't get that stuff, it makes the tarot too 'airy fairy mystical' for me. The tarot desrves to be treated in a far more abstract and artistic way, maybe even scientific. The music I have composed for the tarot is of course my view of things, which won't suit everyone, as the tarot is open to loads of subtlety and difference.

electronica. i prefer to listen to lots and lots of electronica when reading. particularly trance or something like that. orbital is good. some aphex twin is good. paul oakenfold is awesome too. i actually will read listening to anything though, be it punk, electronica, ben harper, jazz, or even the sounds of the boys next door playing Quake (i.e. "Jon you f***ing suck!! i hate you!" "bookah! i just fragged your sorry ass." and the like)

I listen to a number of stuff. From Enya, to Papa Roach, it depends, and I also have J-pop running. (J-pop- Japanese music)
