What Can I Pick Up In New Orleans?

I'm going to New Orleans next week. I'll be marching in a couple of parades as an escort for a parade participant. Although I'd like to have more time, I'll have one free day while I'm there.

My son tells me there's a bunch of occult and voodoo shops in the Big Easy.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what I might pick up while I'm there?

Stay away from Bourbon Street- you might pick up a social disease there!

Just Kidding.

Have you ever been to New Orleans? It's beautiful and dangerous. Do not go walking anywhere alone outside the Quarter in broad daylight, much less after dark.

Most of the 'Voodoo' stuff you're going to find is very commercial and Kitschy. If you are looking for the 'real' thing, do not expect to simply walk into a store and expect to find it. VooDoo is alive and well in New Orleans, and if you make too noticible a figure, ...starts sounding like a bad horror movie. Don't go anywhere alone, and do not trust anyone. If you are sent to odd streets in dark, peculiar neighborhoods...don't go.

Remember, The French Quarter has the highest crime rate in the country.

Hi Tarotbear,
I know nothing about New Orleans - Just wanted to say I sincerely enjoy reading your posts. You truly have a way with words. (Smile)

Enjoy your day.
Love and Light,

Ummm . . . the Garden District is safer than the Quarter, day or night. You probably won't get jacked in the French Quarter because of all the plainclothes cops, but you might get your pocket picked. Not likely in the Garden District.

Hi Divinerguy!

This is a bit off the subject, but whenever I think of New Orleans it reminds me of a book by Tom Robbins "Jitterbug Perfume." Its a humorous but thought-provokng novel about the search for eternal youth. It takes place in New Orleans, Paris and Seattle but begins in ancient Scandanavia. Its a wild, wild ride! Deals with religion, time travel, myth, synchonicity, metaphysics - you name it. Pick it up if you can to read on the plane.

Anyway, I haven't been to the big easy yet, so I'm not much help. Enjoy yourself, but I agree with others here... be careful, be aware!! Its a dangerous city (and that's coming from a former New Yorker!)

january, isn't Jitterbug Perfume great? I loved it too!!!

divinerguy, yes New Orleans is not exactly a safe city, but don't get too hyped about it. I've always gone by the notion that what you focus on is drawn to you. So if you go around N.O. looking for someone that might rob or assault you they will. Just be smart and careful but have fun too. I was there a couple of years ago and had a ball. Not a bit of trouble anywhere around me. :)
tarotbear is right though - most of the stuff you find in the Quarter is trashy tourist stuff. But again it's still fun. There's a Marie Leuvau (spelling?) Voodoo store in the Quarter that is hilarious. Definitely the trashy tourist but so much fun to see. Now then, even I (after what I just said) would not go looking for voodoo or the like without a person who knows the town and the people. So again have fun, but just be smart.
It's just one of those places - like New York - where you can have a blast but have to be smart and careful. Have loads of fun!!!

Ahhhhhhhh New Orleans ... love that place *LOL*. I went a couple of years ago and had a blast, and plan to go back next chance I get. And yes I was roaming the Quarter Streets at night with friends. We just had a ton of fun and no problems. Things I enjoyed while there were the the Vampire Tour which started infront of the Cathedral on Jackson Square ... I also went to the Voodoo museum (during the day), and of course to the Mardi Gras Museum. I enjoyed them all ... you can also get a tarot reading at Jackson square if you would really like *ROFLMAO* ...

As for things to bring back with you .... a Zydego (sp?) CD *LOL* happiest most fun loving music you will hear. A feather boa and plastic beads are also customary ... ahhhh and the hang over! *LOL*

Have a great time!!! If you can find it go to Marie's Voodoo Bar on Decatur for a drink ~giggles~ ... interesting things hanging around the bar. I am so jealous ... :(

... and jasmine and halos of buzzing bees! What an awesome read for a Wicca class! I'm sure Faunabay will agree. A very dear friend of mine who first encouraged my spiritual growth recommended the book to me.

BTW: if you run into a "Kudra" (or is it Wren?) on another msg. board .... ;)

Gary - I suspect you can find whatever you look for in New Orleans...I had a great time when I blew through years ago. :-) Mardi Gras is great fun!

I'm a big Tom Robbins fan - I've read all his books - my favorite is Still Life With Woodpecker

I actually heard about Jitterbug Perfume from someone in a tarot class - one of the other students and I were talking about Pan. LOL So of course I agree it would be a great book for a Wiccan class! :P

BEETS!!!! hehehehehe
