do you read those cards that fall out of the deck when shuffling?

yes. often these cards are important to your reading. so make a note of them, put them back into the deck and continue shuffling your deck and choosing your cards. see if those cards show up in your reading and take note of their importance. if they don't show up, remember their meaning and add your thoughts to the layout.

How do I choose a deck?

You must decide what you want from a deck before you can choose one. Do you want it to have a religious basis? Do you want it to have traditional names for the suits, majors, and courts? What type of art style do you like? Do you want full scenes on the minors (like Rider-Waite) or just pictures of the suit symbol the required number of times, called pips (like Tarot of Marseilles). Do you want a more intuitive deck or a more educational deck?

The most important thing to look for is a deck that speaks to you. Many people will say this, but they never explain what they mean by it. What it means is that, when you look at the cards, you should easily be able to determine the meaning of the card by the artwork on it. Often you'll feel a click inside of understanding. Sometimes the deck you feel this with will surprise you in someway, not adhering to one or more ofthe requirements you set in the above questions. That's OK, trust your intutition. Intuition can be a big part of reading Tarot.

Also, don't be afraid to collect numerous sets of cards. Every card set may add new insight to the card meaning. Also, it's likely you'll find yourself outgrowing your decks once in awhile, if youfeel like you arent getting anything from the cards you are using anymore, go ahead and find anew deck that speaks to you. Youcan either trade the old deck, or keep it for your collection, that's totally up to you.

Most of all, Tarot should be enjoyable. Don't stress out over choosing the "wrong" deck. No such thing exists, as all decks have something to teach you. Look around the net at different sites with card pictures, and soon you'll find one that you like enough to call your own.

Um doesnt anyone have anything to add to this? I figured more people would jump at this chance to help newbies :) No one to answer about reversed cards, or care of cards, orhow to shuffle. or having to be given a deck (hehe)
