taro-holics anonymous!!!!

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 12 Apr 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

OK we've got the beginnings of a taro-holics anonymous group going ---- Me, Jewel, truthsayer, All is One, and quite a few others if truth be told!!!

Anyone else want to join our pit-e-ful group and spend all your hard earned money - ending up as a bag lady (or man) sitting on the street corner (of course right next to us) begging money to get your fix of the next tarot deck that just HAS to be yours!!!!!

ROFLMAO

Original Destiny  12 Apr 2002
Sign me up..thought I had got it licked...but back on the hard stuff again...need cold turkey (tarot)...:TFOOL

truthsayer  12 Apr 2002
rofl at faunabay. i really will write those steps eventually but i have the flu right now and feel weak. i wonder how many more decks i will acquire before this month is out. there must be something about the month of april that's bringing out the obsessive compulsive side of our nature!!!!!!!

original destiny--i absolutely love you signature about parking in a parallel universe. i feel that way all that time. my husband teases me that i'm "just visiting this planet".

Liliana  12 Apr 2002
me, im down to trading away my wicca books for a deck lol,and I really want to order that rohrig but i already cant afford my cable bill, we at least i had pity taken on me and she decided to trade for one book instead of two, thank you :)

Kiama  12 Apr 2002
I think I need to join this Taro-holics grounp... My collection needs expanding.

;) :P :*

Kiama

Bella  12 Apr 2002
i was going to say "me too"... but taro-holics anonymous..doesn't that mean we have to stop buying new decks? um, sorry, can't make that promise, don't even want to try. yes, I too will be a bag lady begging for change to buy the latest deck.
**bella... sure that she'll get home to find her phone turned off since payment is way overdue, but somehow managed to order three decks (from Alida!!) two weeks ago**

Eventually is not good enough! ~LOL and ducks before getting hit with an empty Tarot box on the head~. By the way Truth ~grins~ I got two more decks coming to me via trade ~giggles~ ... that makes about 7 or 8 this month (and it is still not the 15th!) *ROFLMAO*. Get to feeling better and let us know how we can help in writing those watchamacallits *LOL*

Hope Quolus finds this thread, I was trying to recruit him *ROFLMAO* ... I am a bad influence ... how sweet it is to be bad! *ROFLMAO*

Fauna sis, thanks for starting the thread!

Are you insane? *LOL* we would die if we did that! This group revels in its addiction! *LOL*. We come together to support each other in the sense that we understand the vital need to have new tarot decks at all cost (but would recommend you pay your bills first ... eating is up to you *LOL*)

(Truthsayer, we really need those steps ... see people are already getting confused *LOL*.)

Kiama!!!! Welcome, I figured you'd join sooner or later *LOL*. So now, about where to expand you decks to ... ~giggles~.

Rhiannon  12 Apr 2002
Kiama's *joining*? Jeez, I thought she'd be the Grand High Poobah! LOL :D

And I'd be joing too if I still had any money left from my tax return... stoopid car being behind me like that where it's not supposed to be.... if it wasn't there I wouldn't have hit the stoopid thing.....

Rhiannon :) (who ALMOST bought the Celtic Dragon yesterday but her card was maxed out! LOL :D )

MeeWah  12 Apr 2002
I have been on a sabbatical from acquiring any more decks so I doubt I would be member material. I think I have about 30 decks or less.

Umbrae  12 Apr 2002
Psssst…

Hey you, wanna buy a Tarot deck? Only used once by a little old lady in Overland Park. It’s clean.

Yeah baby, and it’s cheap.

What?

Oh yeah baby, the first one’s on me…free…

You’ll like it, I promise…See the artwork? Pretty huh…wanna see more?

Well now…that’s gonna cost ya…

How about a nice set of Rune Stones...

Oh yeah baby, that's what we're talkin' 'bout...

Liliana  12 Apr 2002
You know, they should start a Tarot deck club like a book club, uy 3 decks for a penny, then buy 10 decks in the next 3 years, Id sign up!

Zhritza  12 Apr 2002
Is there enough demand for a LoScarabeoholics subgroup within this group? heh.

ROFLMAO!!!! Oh Umbrae, that is too good!!! If this was a dark street corner I'd be bagged, tied and you'd have all my money!! ROFLMAO

Liliana  13 Apr 2002
This groupsd a pretty funny oxymoron, since noneofus are anonymous and none of us plan on beating the addiction hehe, I think we are really the PTA (Proud Tarot Addicts), oh thats taken, maye TAP (Tarot Addicts and Proud) or TAROT (Tarot Adicts Relieving Our Tension) lol

sarahenglish  13 Apr 2002
Since Truthsayer is under the weather, I'll take a stab at the 12 steps of Tarot addiction:

1. We admit we are powerless over wanton tarot deck acquisition - That our tarot decks have become so numerous that they are unmanageable.

2. We came to believe that Tarot holds a power over us and we have lost our sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn every last cent of our money over to the acquisition of as many decks as possible.

4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of our tarot decks. And have studied them until we have gone blind.

5. Admit to Aeclectic Tarot members, ourselves and any other human being who will listen, the quantity of decks that we own, have on layaway, order, or wish for.

6. Not only are we not ready to have anyone remove our tarot decks from our possession, you'll be taking your life in your hands if you so much as approach them with bad karma.

7. Humbly beg for more tarot decks.

8. Make a list of all the decks we have wanted, and have dreamt about owning them all.

9. Make direct purchases or trades for such decks wherever possible, except when to do so would leave us homeless with nothing but a grocery cart full of decks to haul around town while we preached the benefits of tarot at every street corner.

10. Continue to count, shuffle, admire, and do readings with our tarot decks and when we find a new one on the market we promptly buy it.

11. Seek through readings and meditation to increase our knowledge of tarot and our collection of decks. Praying that more will be created and that we will have the financial ability to purchase them.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening through tarot and as a result of these steps have acquired an embarrassing number of tarot decks, we try to infect others and drag them down with us!

VGimlet  13 Apr 2002
It's so nice to be around people that understand LOL.

What has it been about this month? I had decided firmly to limit my purchases, and only get one or two decks at the most. I already have two, have three more on the way, and two others that I am hoping for. However, if I get a certain deck I'm after, I will be on a self-imposed slowdown for a couple months.
Maybe. Probably. Unless I find a deck I....
Nevermind.

Pedeka  14 Apr 2002
Im looking at a BIG tarot problem here. The place where I have to pick up my paycheck for my new job is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to a metaphysical shop. Brand new paycheck in one hand..... racks of cards next door.....Im going to need a some kind of support group. Either to stop me from going in every week or to help alleviate the guilt Im going to have from spending all my money.

slinky_jo  14 Apr 2002
Hi, my name's Slinky, and I'm a ...

Wah wah!!

...mine gott - I bought FOUR decks today. Do you know how expensive decks are here? Sheesh. I need a pill... ;)

truthsayer  14 Apr 2002
to sarah english--after the perfect job you did on the 12 step program, i think i won't have to write a separate list of steps. embarassingly enough, i can see myself in all 12 steps! :p maybe we need to do a taronon--a support group for the significant others and family of tarot-holics. the purpose of taronon will be to help them understand our need to have more decks and take extra jobs to pay for the other bills. then there's adult children of tarot-holics. when our children are grown, we don't want them to have difficulty getting along w/ ppl who aren't tarot-holics. this group will help them deal w/ their own tarot needs and fitting into a non-tarot community.

blue  14 Apr 2002
I'm a taro-holic.

I used to buy decks and use them. Then I'd use them a few times and put them away. Recently I just looked at the artwork and would not even shuffle them. A few days ago I bought the Victoria Rigena Tarot and never even took the cards out of the wrapper!

When I realized I had a problem I was afraid I would eventually die pathetic and alone. Then I realized that I'm already pathetic and alone but at least I have a great collection of Tarot decks.

I have my priorities after all.

Kiama  14 Apr 2002
ROFLMAO!

SarahEnglish: Yep, been through all those steps already! Maybe there are more than 12??!!

sarahenglish  14 Apr 2002
Our Children will be Children of The Light, guided through life by our superior intellect! Because we spend all of our money on tarot, we are sparing our children from the awful fate of being spoiled. Because we spend all of our time absorbing tarot, we are able to impart ancient wisdom to our children. We are providing the world with enlightened progeny that are closer to our archetypal ideals than their repressed classmates. Which archetype do my children represent? The World, they may be naked, but they are dancing and are the center of my world! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

This from a girl with a pitiful 2 decks and 2 books, but with a universe full of fellow tarotholics to urge me on! Do you suppose there is a sychronicity that our beloved forum starts with an A as in (AA?) What about the initials AT which is clearly a reference to TA which stands for Tarotholics Anonymous. Which is in order because you have to find the symbolism in our sickness, we arent just going to give it to you.

PS who's reading Tiger's cards? A Master no doubt (pun intended!) lol

Lee  14 Apr 2002
I absolutely am not a tarot addict.

To prove it, I went to my local Border's today. I saw three shiny new copies of the Faeries' Oracle, which has been intriguing me for months, but it's not something I need to have. I felt an urge to buy it, but I resisted, because a) I really need to stop spending money, and b) I really want to spend some time working with my latest favorite deck (Victoria Regina). So I firmly told myself "No," put it back on the shelf, and started walking out the door. End of story.

You probably have guessed the real end of the story... I am now poorer by $25.00 and richer by one copy of the Faeries' Oracle.

I guess you better sign me up.

Kaz  15 Apr 2002
haha, lol @ you lee !!!
it's a good thing we don't have these kind of stores where i live, i have to order decks online otherwise i can't get them, and it's easier to stay away from them.

kaz

catlin  15 Apr 2002
Ok, count me in.

Last week my fav book store got several new decks among which a Giant Haindl deck, the I Ching dell' Amore, the Veccheta tarot and some more and I had the feeling that they are just what is still lacking in my collection.

i can definitely commiserate, they are most likely the same price here too, you'd be lucky to buy three decks here for 100 dollars...damn currency conversion...

i don't think i am at the point where i would try and sell my brother on ebay for a tarot deck but i'm sure i'll be getting there soon LOL

isnt there a system in support groups where you get a sponsor who helps you out when things look grim and you decide to give into temptation? :p

:)

truthsayer  15 Apr 2002
yeah, you can get a sponsor but s/he'll probably only tell you to forget about food and gas in the car! BUY THE DECK!! we escalate each others spending frenzy. for one i wouldn't have wild spirit if it hadn't gotten such enthusiastic reviews here. the froud fairy deck is on the way b/c jewel and faunabay insisted i had to have in order to keep up w/ them! :p

I will help you relieve the guilt ... there is no way I would EVER be so mean as to try and talk someone out of acquiring a new tarot deck ... that would simply be against my religion *ROFLMAO*. I keep trying to convince my fiance that me owning a metaphysical shop would be great, and that then we could right off my tarot decks as business expenses *ROFLMAO*. I do not think he is buying into it *LOL*. But I will keep trying. ;P

I just e-mailed a special place to see if they have anymore copies of the Greenwood ~giggles~ ... if they do, do you need me to order your copy as well? ... just thought I'd let you know since I know that you too want this deck.

truthsayer  15 Apr 2002

Emily  15 Apr 2002
I am a tarot-holic :)

I had one deck, Rider Waite, when I joined this site now I have 7 - and 2 more ordered. I'm using will power now, no more visiting bookshops or Amazon (until the next time a deck catches my eye and calls out for me to buy it lol ) :)

truthsayer  16 Apr 2002
i'm having a crisis guys and i need serious help! i want to order the mountain dream deck. ok, i can handle $22. but last night i saw the neferteri deck and feel driven to buy it. it's $45 tho!! i really don't want to spend that much!! the art is so beautiful and it's done on pressed gold foil. i like egyptian stuff and don't have an egyptian deck--but $45? i'm out of my mind!! i also want to order the glastonbury, inner child, whimsicle, celtic book of the dead, and cosmic. if i buy all those decks i'll be digging myself out of the hole for 6 months!!!!! someone please help me stop the insanity!!!!!!! <<<<<<<>>>>>>>>> that's about $175 dollars total in decks. i'm going to have to get some moderation in here. i'm still getting to know wild spirit, wheel of change, dance of life and i finally got my froud fairy deck today. i think the first line of business is that i have to order the mountain dream before they go out of print again. Whew!!! one decision down. <<<<>>>>> :p

sarahenglish  16 Apr 2002
LOL!!!

Jewel  16 Apr 2002
~Galops in on her horse and falls off landing at Truthsayers feet~ Are yoy OK? The distress in your voice made me come ASAP ~catches her breath, still panting~ Okies let look at your problem:

1. Dream Mountain deck is reasonably priced, you already ordered it so you are done there!

2. Neferteri deck ... you don't own an Egyptian deck? I would have never guessed! we need to solve that. Have you considered waiting until the reprint of the Clive Barrett deck? That is what I am doing :) ... just a suggestion.

3. Glastonbury: Faunabay just got this deck and really likes it! (I tempted her when I ordered it *LOL*). Mine will not be in until mid-may (due to a book I ordered :() Can you wait until I get mine so I can help talk you out of it *ROFLMAO* (like that is going to happen *LOL*).

4. Cosmic: yes you want this one, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Go on and order it. You might want to get the book too *LOL*.

5. Celtic Book of the Dead? Ohhhh do tell me more I might need this one too *LOL*.

6. Whimsicle: only get if you are prepared to purchase the book as well. Could that wait until June? I do not believe it is in any fear of being out of print ;)

7. Inner Child: hmmmmmmm I have toyed around with getting this deck several times, but always find something else more interesting. Don't get this one until you have the rest *LOL*.

8. The Greenwood: I am working on it. No promises, but I am trying. If I am able to secure 2 copies of it I will. Just give me some time *LOL*.

Hope I was helpful *LOL*.

truthsayer  16 Apr 2002
oh thank you! thank you! thank you! you have such reasonable advice. i can order the clive barret in advance. good idea. i didn't realize it was a remake of the same deck. it won't be here til june. if i just get mountain dream and cosmic for right now i can handle that financially. truth is dripping sweat from such a serious anxiety attack. <<<>>>>oh! it's so wonderful to have friends here. TA does work!!!! ROFLMAO

Jewel  16 Apr 2002
The Clive Barrett deck is up for preorder? where? Amazon? you must tell me Truthsayer!

Pedeka  16 Apr 2002

The things popping in and out of peoples bottoms all over the deck makes me laugh and laugh!

truthsayer  16 Apr 2002

faunabay  16 Apr 2002
Are you guys having trouble finding the Greenwood deck Jewel? It's still in print isn't it??

And I hate to tell you this but I love my Inner Child cards. LOL

But look what you did to me. I don't have the money at all, but for the Clive Barrett I might have to make an exception. ROFL

dolphingirl  16 Apr 2002
Hi

I got the Neferteri deck from a gentleman in France for $25.00 and shipping was reasonable. If you want to e-mail me I could give you his address :)

R. Somerville has the Greenwood Tarot available to order from their site, at:
http://www.playingcardsales.co.uk/nbtar/index.htm

From their main menu, select Choose Cards, then select Type, then select A-G, scroll down to the bottom of the list and there you should see the Greenwood Tarot!

It is a beautiful deck. I was able to get mine off of eBay.

Enjoy the thrill of the quest!

Hi Pedeka!!! what shop is it that you want to go into with me? ... sorry I am bit confused.

Too bad you bought the Bosch I would have happily traded mine to you for something else *LOL*. I love the colors, but cannot get passed the things coming out of some character butts *LOL*, it just looks painful *LOL*.

If you are interested in an Egyptian deck you definetly want to check out Clive Barret's. It is called The Ancient Egyptian. I cannot wait to get it!!!!

All Is One  17 Apr 2002
There is a time to sigh over the declining balance in our checkbooks ...

AND a time to advance fearlessly into the bookshop and act as if your check will OF COURSE clear properly. . . .
As you sign away the last trickles of $$$ for that which you must have.

Getting a sponsor is great!!!
I haven't even found this thread til now because truthsayer is such a wonderful sponsor!

I'll share- but I'm sure Rhianonn or Lunalafey or Kiama, Jewel, or Faunabay...could be persusded to be sponsors- the secret is that all sponsors have (or had) sponsors of their own...

Because we ALL need support and advice in this terrible (hee hee)
life-long affliction under which we struggle so admirably :) :) :)

~Giggles~ hey All Is One! Glad you found the thread, I was starting to wonder if you had reconsidered *LOL*. Turthsayer, Faunabay and I are Charter Members so we did not have sponsors ... Truthsayer dreamed up the idea and poof here we are. Sponsors are really optional around here. And please forgive Truthsayer for not finding you and bringing you to the thread, she was out shopping for the Ancient Egyptian Tarot ... you do understand the importance of that (*LOL*).

By the way Truthsayer I preordered the Ancient Egyptian today ~grins~ thanx, and Faunabay I sent you the Amazon 10% discount in case you need order it *LOL*.

truthsayer  17 Apr 2002
you know i've been getting some interesting readings lately that insinuate that i am being greedy and selfish. i'm thinking the cards are telling me i need to calm down w/ my card hunting quest and get back to real life. but i went months that i didn't have time to play w/ my tarot and now i'm having a rebound affect trying to catch up w/ the time i lost. swear to god but i got so excited looking for decks one night that i couldn't pull myself from the computer until 3 a.m. i got it good and i got it bad. i am beginning to think i am a baaad influence on all of you. }>

Jewel  17 Apr 2002
Hey Truth you will find your balance ~giggels~. When I was in grad school I did not have much time at all to work or play with my Tarot cards. In the last year I have, like you, been spending as much time as possible with my cards and working with them. I have learned to find a balance, and when I have been really really good ensuring that I have been sensitive to others needs and all then I reward myself with a new deck *LOL*. Yep that is how I reward myself for anything I think I did in an outstanding manner *LOL*. I know, I am crazy, but you would be amazed at what self praise can do for the self-esteem ... then you are all happy, makes other people happy and like taro-holics it has a domino effect!

All Is One  17 Apr 2002
and pray for MORE decks to get published...the unique, the fabulous, the
unbelievably expensive...We need those to yearn for, too!
I'm sick of pacifying myself with my measly purchase of 3 decks this month
(first new deck I have bought in over three years- how did I make it...I'm lucky I can still stand up and walk unaided!)

Yep: I think the goddess has granted me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.

I have the absolute serene knowledge that I cannot cannot change the enormous IV to wanting and buying and thinking about tarot cards that this site (and all of you, my friends-) has sunk directly into the main vein...

Off to Amazon I go...debit card in my teeth as I type,
*pauses briefly to mutter to the critters "I hope you can all cut down on the darn millet and honey treat sticks...I ask for so little!"*})

Are there some good images of it online someplace? I have his Norse Tarot, which is extremely well done. I don't hear much conversation about it on these forums for some reason... maybe because it's been around awhile and is old hat now.

You shouldn't have informed me about the Barrett-deck! I feel I MUST have it!

arizonagirl  18 Apr 2002
The old cowgirl stands up before the crowd and admits her adiction. Just found ANOTHER deck today that I can't live without - Wild Spirit, just when I made a pledge that I wouldn't, wouldn't, really wouldn't get any more decks.

Liliana  18 Apr 2002
Oh no Arizonagirl, you must buy the World Spirit, every collector NEEDS the World Spirit, remember it was the one I conscecrated at the ritual. Really, go on a fast and buy it, trust your High Priestess, she knows these things :THP

You can save money by pre-ordering it. LOL It lists for $29 but Amazon has it for $20 right now!!!!! hint hint hint OH AND they have a buddy discount going on too. Jewel ordered it and sent my email address in as a buddy and I got an additional discount. So everyone get together and save, save, save!! OK I know we're spending money, but we get a discount so we're actually saving right?? LOL That's what I keep telling myself anyway!! :)

I just love the artwork on this deck!! I can't wait to get it.

Zhritza  18 Apr 2002
thanks for the link, Lee :) It is beautiful. I have never been drawn to Egyptian-themed decks, but I can certainly see myself deciding in the near future, "Well, I should have at least ONE good Egyptian-themed deck."

It's been really hard, guys, to not throw in the towel and buy the Wild Spirit. I've evaded it thus far because I have a couple of fantasy/fairy-type decks and plan to get at least a couple more. Plus, I need my money for other things. I was delighted to find out today that I could indeed transfer the Light and Shadow Tarot to my Borders from another one in town; turns out it's no longer in print!

MeeWah  18 Apr 2002
There are several Egyptian-themed decks but Clive Barrett's deck is one of my favorites. If you are interested in Egyptology or appreciate the Egyptian-styled art, I promise you that you will not be disappointed! The accompanying book (not a LWB) is also very interesting. It includes Qabalistic, astrological & mythological references..

This thread is so long I got to page 3 and decided I just Had to post before reading the rest! Blue , I'm glad that your tarot decks are keeping you company as I'm sure mine will! :D ! I have 33 decks which is really probubly more than anyone Needs. And my current "wish list" is also up to 33 ! I haven't been able to afford any decks in April  nor for the last few months BUT I just started working SO when I can squeeze a little money from all the bills that have piled up big time!! I have tarot deck buying dreams!
I live within a 10 minute drive of Borders, Barnes-N-Nobel AND Media Play! All 3 carry quite a selection of tarot decks! Then there's numerous online stores I've been looking at recently! Oh my! Count me in for Tarotholic's anonymous...............

Scorpion  19 Apr 2002
I, too, haven't read all the posts here and I may be repeating a point someone else has picked up, but I just thought I'd drop by to say: sorry, guys, but I won't be joining - I'm proud to be a Taro-holic and I refuse to be Anonymous! Particularly if it involves giving up buying decks!

However, I hope I can "look in" from time to time to see if you're all OK!

napaisti  19 Apr 2002
count me in!

even though I only have 7 decks at the moment, I'm definitely addicted. I live in a small, semi-rural town in NC and it took me a while to find a metaphysical shop anywhere nearby (it's about 20-25 miles from home). I've only been twice, each time looking for a specific (non-tarot) book. The 1st time I walked out with both the book I needed and Legend: the Arthurian deck. Today, somehow the Faery Wicca deck and 78 Degrees of Wisdom ended up in my bag!

I completely blame Aeclectic for this terrible (and wonderful) affliction! If it weren't for all the great people and their enthusiasm for tarot and the variety of decks, I wouldn't have this monkey on my back.

another day older and deeper in debt,
napaisti

Heavens No, we would never!!! tell anyone to not buy tarot decks! We're just here for support to help you decide which decks you need! LOL And of course to point out decks you never thought about before!! ROFL

Twelve Steps of Tarot-holics
from David Bogie
This piece originally appeared in "Tarot News" July '96.

1. We admitted we were powerless over tarot --
not only is the mechanism completely out of our
hands, but you know, we really only ever needed
one pack and its little book.... well, we also
needed a nice little silk pouch to keep them
in.... oh, and maybe a little wooden box, if
that's not asking too much.... hmm, I haven't
seen that deck before -- er, yes, we admitted we
were powerless over tarot and that our lives and
storage options had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than
ourselves somehow guides our cards to their
positions in our spreads.

3. Made a decision to turn our cards and their
interpretations over to the care of God, as we
understood Him, Her, Them or It.

4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of
our entire tarot collection.

5. Admitted to God, and to another human being,
the exact nature of what we thought we were
missing and exactly how low we were capable of
going in order to acquire it.

6. We were entirely ready to have God remove all
of these gaps in our collection.

7. Humbly asked Him (Her, Them, It) to
understand that we really didn't expect Him to do
all the footwork for us.

8. Made a list of all persons we had received
tarot items from and became willing to give
thanks to them all.

9. Gave direct thanks to such people wherever
possible except when to do so would make us aware
of additional decks and books we did not know
existed but now lusted after.

10. Continued to take inventory of our
collection, determined not to feel lousy because
we can't have it all nor can we know it all, and,
as a result of being at peace with this reality,
when we were wrong about something related to
tarot promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation and the
spreading of our cards to improve our conscious
contact with God, as we understand
Him-Her-Them-It, seeking only knowledge of the
whereabouts of cool tarot stuff and the financial
resources to acquire it.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as a result
of these steps, we tried to carry this message to
similarly afflicted persons so they might not
feel so guilty about their tarot addictions, and
to think about these principles while thumbing
through our tarot books, shuffling our tarot
cards, and studying the latest US Games catalog.

truthsayer  20 Apr 2002
thanks for sharing that! i really enjoyed it. in fact, it feels good to know this addiction and 12 step program has been going on long before i realized i'm hopelessly addicted. ;)

All Is One  20 Apr 2002
Liliana- I am going to run down to the little bar
two blocks from my apartment,
sometime this week. . .
and ask them if there is such a thing as a"Jack Daniels Tin"
(or any other item that's cool and perfect-to-store-tarot-cards--OR-runes )
and then I'm going to beg "Little Larry" the bartender, and the other
pretty female one who is actually nice to everyone (I never see that in a bar)
and I will shamelessly beg, slip a few folded up ones, and ask. . .

For at least TWO... so I can send one to you,
you are so devious- are you hinting in your signature for a Jack
Daniels Tin, or

can I run down and get as much liquor loot as I can
and
lovingly accept my inner "greedy ogre"
So that I can actually
keep them all..

I say I want it ALL. . .
every bag,
basket,
box, and attractive bucket. . .

Thanks to you L. for those excellent 12 steps from the tarot mag-
Any of you who have really ever done the AA thing (which is a
wonderful way to connect to great people, whatever else people
try and make of it) will see that the writer of those tarot steps
has stood up in front of many and said "Hi, My name is..."
And probably has about 20 yrs sober. . . .

Alison,
~*~ as she keeps scribbling on her little scraps,
trying to compose an -understated yet enchanting-
new signature that makes something happen:
~anything~

as she wonders "Is a Hopi rain chant
is as hard to spell as it sounds??? ~*~

Liliana  01 May 2002
This has moved far too far down the list, we are a group and must keep in touch and recruit new members after all. I never saw the previous post from all is one, the JackDaniels tin thing is to tease a certain someone, I believe Orginal Destiny, who keeps her cards in one. Id be interested in any alcoholic beverage containers you want to send me tho, especially bags. Umbrae gave me a set of runes in a cigarette tin. hehe

Anyway, what new decks have you guys bought yourself, maybe as a Beltane present. ;) I ordered Rohrig for myself yesterday.

:THP

Maan  01 May 2002
O no I believe i'm an addict!!!! ( reminds me of a song by K's Choice ;) )

I have 23 decks and they keep coming
Is it too late to join? :(

its never too late to join, thats why I bumped the post hehe

maan? what? 23???
never thought you had so many......
well, i don't qualify for this select group of people, i only have 6 decks.

Jewel  01 May 2002
~Giggles~ hello Family! Happy Beltane!! I am most happy to announce that I have given myself a nice little present ~giggles~ the limited signed edition of the Rock and Roll Tarot (thanks Qolus!!). Ohhhhh and thanks to a dear friend (who I am trying to recruit to our group ... ~looks up at Kaz~) I am also getting the Greenwood Tarot! YAY!!! what a great deck, 2 decks on the 1st day of May I am living up well to my addiction *LOL*.

Mystick Dragon  01 May 2002
Hello family! Luv ya all, after my decks that is.

wavebreaker  01 May 2002
What about me, I've only got one... :(

But two on the way!! :)

Zhritza  01 May 2002
Well, actually I have two decks I just got in the mail from a wonderful trade (if you're listening, truth, the Minchiate's in the mail!!), both gorgeously strange and yummy: the Phantasmagoric Theater and the Neuzeit. And yesterday, uh, just before I left work I sort of, uh, bought the Nigel Jackson. Whoopsie. })

truthsayer  01 May 2002
the tarot addiction virus runs rampant in this forum. dozens have fallen to the agony of its financial woes! some are saying tarot addiction is better than sex! OMG!! is there a vaccine for this thing??????? LOL the first sign of addiction is for tarot to become a driving force in your life. by its insidous nature, it doesn't have to be collecting decks alone...you could come to aeclectic 20x a day to check on new messages. you might have to buy every book suggested! new ways for the addiction to be spread are found every day... no need to wash your hands to prevent contamination--nothing stops it once the virus sets to work! could this be the downfall of civilization as we know it? HORRORS!!!<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>

Liliana  02 May 2002
6 decks qualifies, 1 deck qualifies, anything qualifies, as long as you DESIRE a numbero f decks or you check the forums constantly, and feel the needto look up any deck mentioned in passing,Ionly have 6 going on 7 decks myself, and 3 of those decided to loose themselves on me,oh wellIllfind them when I move next year if they dont show up before then :)

:THP

Jewel  02 May 2002
~Giggles~ Truthsayer you are just to funny ... and please try to contain yourself, this is not an R rated site we have young ones that come here too! ... it is OK if you want to encourage them to spend their money wisely on Tarot decks and other needed accessories, but we must not talk about S.. *ROFLMAO*

No seriously, that was hysterical. You guys wanna know something ... you don't? ... well no matter I'll tell you anyway *LOL*, for the longest time I really honestly thought that no one was as obsessed as I am with Tarot, I am so so happy that I am not the only one. And as mentioned in earlier posts, tarot addiction or affliction or whatever you choose to call it is not about how many decks you have or want, it is about your passion for tarot :) ... some of us just need the decks to go with the passion ~giggle/snicker/snort~

Well, Tarotholics, I've just hit the big 5-Oh! 50 decks, that is. Actually, it's probably 52 or 53, but who's counting?

One of my regular used bookstores that never has any good decks had FIVE, count 'em, FIVE decks today! Yippee!

And do you want to know how addicted I am to Aeclectic, let alone to collecting Tarot decks? I don't even have them all unwrapped yet! LOL! I got home and immediately got on the Web so I could boast about my latest aquisitions! :D Truth, you are right...there is a sickness running rampant in this Forum!

The flip side of getting a great deal at used bookstores on decks is that I don't get to support Aeclectic with my purchase, so I start to feel guilty! There's a way to assuage that guilt, of course. The Victoria Regina Tarot, by way of Aeclectic and Amazon! ;)

Peace,

Melvis

I... am a traotholic. *she hangs head, trying to look shameful... or at least hide the huge grin*

I bought 2 new books today (almost three, but the SO would have thrown a hissy fit). Add to that some other nifty stuff - including a calcite scrying ball - and the fact that I wandered very happily through a fairly small store for literally hours... and I'll admit to being a tarotholic.

Melvis - OH you are just too wicked leading us on like that!!!!! :) LOL

How did you know the whole time I was reading your post I was thinking...."OK what'd you buy? What decks did you get? Huh?? Huh?? Come on what'd you get?"
:D ROFLMAO :D

Melvis  03 May 2002
Faunabay sez: "Melvis - OH you are just too wicked leading us on like that!!!!! LOL"

Yep. That's me...the wicked one! ;) Just trying to build up the suspense until the fabulous denouement!

But I should know better than to do that to the poor Tarotholics! I've probably caused fainting, nail-biting, and any number of panic attacks by baiting you all like that! I'm so sorry! It won't happen again!

(Especially since I just tapped myself out on funds available for deck purchases! ;) )

Kiama  03 May 2002
Oh! I need help! (Getting more money that is.. >)

I have my 55th deck on its way now...

Y'see, I currently have 49, but I have got the William Blake Tarot of the Creative Imagination on order... Vision Quest coming from Pollux, Glastonbury Tarot from the boyf coming soon, as a pressie for Beltane, the Ancestral Path and Tarot of the Old Path from Catlin in a trade, and I just bought the Merryday deck and book set, signed, from Mystique Moonlight..

*Sigh*

It really becomes serious when you no longer collect decks for the art, but just because they are OOP, or rare..

Kiama

Jewel  03 May 2002
~Giggles madly~ well I just ordered 5 tarot bags *LOL* ... I got one with faeries, one with musical notes (for my Rock & Roll Tarot when it arrives), one with oak leaves, one with a mermaid ... and ohhhh I forgot what the last one has on it *LOL* ... now that is BAD! perhaps it was the wizzard *LOL*. Maybe I should also go get myself a deck today ~giggles~ ... my Faery Oracle card of the day is the Faery Godmother ... doesn't that mean that I should also get myself a new deck? .... I am so hopless *ROFLMAO*

truthsayer  03 May 2002
jewel, just a question out of curiosity and concern for your well-being...how in the world do you manage to pay for food and shelter? are you all ready living on a street corner w/ your computer and tarot decks? i'm bad but at least i've made it thru this week w/o purchasing another deck. trades do not count! ;) a major victory!

i am considering buying my mother a tarot deck for mother's day. LOL but i can't decide what deck has a motherly feminine appeal. she loves roses and i considered the sacred rose but i think that one is too intense for a beginner. she did like my vision quest but i think it's OOP. she's not pagan or christian. she had the mythic but my sister took it from her and used it herself. i'm considering the universal waite by mary hanson roberts b/c the symbols stand out and the pastels are nice. i'm also considering the mountain dream b/c the author lives in our home state and i think mom would appreciate that personal touch and the rural scenery. if i do my job right, i will infect her, too! any other ideas?

Liliana  03 May 2002
I considered getting my mother Rohrig for Mothers day,but my mom is really strange ;)

If you were looking for a nontarot deck I may say Angel Blessing Cards have a lovely feminine artwork that would make a nice Mothers Day present.

truthsayer  03 May 2002
that's a really good idea, liliana! i know she likes angels and i think an oracle might be easier for her than a tarot deck. the only thing is i will have to make clear to my sister not to steal this deck from my mother like she did the mythic. sis has money and if she wants one she can buy her own!

truthsayer  03 May 2002
which do y'all think is better: angel blessings or healing w/ the angels? i looked at both at amazon but i can't find a good website w/ pictures of the cards. i bought healing w/ the angels a while back but returned it b/c it did nothing for me. i did think the pictures were beautiful.

faunabay  03 May 2002
My Mom got both the Healing with the Angels and Healing with the Fairy's decks and loves them both. So I can vouch for those but don't have the blessing cards so don't know about that one.

Another suggestion too - I bought my Mom the Tarot Affirmations deck. It's a larger card with half the Universal Waite picture and the other half is affirmations that connect with the card meanings. So she can use the deck without having to memorize the meanings or have to refer to a book. She really loves them too!

Liliana  04 May 2002
Angel Blessing cards are seen here

http://www.wicce.com/angelblpix.html

They have classical angel art as the pictures on them, which makes me think of Mom. Its also in a nice box

Healing with the Angels are here

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/healing-angel/index.html

Also nice cards, but I just happen to prefer the Angel Blessings classsical art feel over the more modern art of these cards

Food? ~pushes her little grocery cart with the wobbly wheel down the street as she contines typing, keeping an eye out to make sure no one goes sticking their paws in the grocery basket which contains all of her tarot treasures ... then looks up and grins at Truthsayer~ how did you guess? *LOL* ... I do appreciate your concern ~smiles~ but I am doing great, I do have food and shelter ... and credit cards *ROFLAMO* ... no seriously the one thing I always ensure first is that my bills are paid, that I have enough food, and the rest can go to Tarot *LOL*, I also make sure and pay my Tarot bill by the end of the month ... no Tarot carryovers are allowed. That way I can always justify that Tarot does not negatively impact my budget ;P .... so what are you tempted to do this week? *LOL*

truthsayer  06 May 2002
well, i'm tempted to order a few books on tarot that i heard were good. one was tarot celebrations but i can't remember the name of the other. it has something to do w/ using tarot to figure out your karma. i'm waiting for 5 decks in the mail now so i'll probably hold off on the deck buying til i get thru them. i've also decided i'm trying my hand at deck reviews. i'm polishing up the one on mountain dream now. i really enjoyed doing it. maybe if i get into writing i won't feel the need to buy so many decks! if i do a tarot review on all my current decks and books, it'll take at least 6 months to a year and that will allow me to catch my breath and really evaluate what i have. i hope slowing down won't make me lose my charter membership! :( LOL ;) but you know me, i love wheeling and dealing so if nothing else i will still be trading!

cyan  17 Aug 2002
well, here i am among the decadent tarotholics and i love it. I have six decks and 2 more coming. I also have 5 books.
and i have my eye on a couple of auctions on ebay.
my husband is going to moan over the amex bill this month.
fortunatly he is artistic himself and tho he doesn't do tarot he likes looking at the artwork on the cards. I absolutly love tarot tho i am still a total beginner. I started in april and feel like i hav found something i was looking for all my life.
And you people are so cool.

Gotta have the Dali, Gotta have the Dali, GOTTA HAVE THE DALI...I'm not an addict! NO! NO! NOT ME! Tarot. Decks. Books. Cards, cards, THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!
You know, I figure that if I only use lights in one room, and don't make any long distance calls, then I can pay the phone and electric bills every two months, and use that which I would have spent, on new decks. I don't have enough, ony 35 or so. Besides, new ones are coming out all of the time, and... I think I need a sponsor.

Well I just thought I would let you know, that today I ordered the Margaret Petersen and the Stained Glass Tarot. The latter with influence from Starfish ;).

Rumor has it that looking into a Dragon's eyes

forces you to log onto Amazon.com,
take one quick and disdainful look...

and , still dep in the Dragon-induced trance~

jump directly into ... (eekkkkk)

The Tarot Garden-

where the tarot addict goes to end it all
in a chapter 11 after the trance wears off~

I almost succumbed to a similar abduction-
and tried to buy an Amerigo F. deck..
missing one card...for a sum

that would feed some families for a
Dragon's span.

Jade, I want a job like that too... where can I apply for one? :D

Yesterday I got my Shakesperian (my first OOP deck :D), and I really love it! So cute and small! And some cards are fantastic!

But... I started chatting with Tarotlady... and I suddenly felt like another deck! I don't even remember what it was... I had been handling my shaky for only ten minutes, and the excitement was over. And this is the first deck I get in months... Is the assuefaction already this bad?

I completely agree with you about the Tarot Erotica, Pollux. I find it repulsive on so many levels. Even though I'm a complete and total tarotholic, I don't think I'd take that deck if someone gave it to me.

I spend way too much time on this forum. I suppose that's just another symptom... ;) sigh

cyan  21 Aug 2002
ok, i was inspired to trade my faerie's oracle and a tarot of the cat people to stardancer for her shapeshifter set.
I am squirming with delight and anticipation and i hope she is also. Legend and Art Nouveau and Morgan Greer are on their way to me also.
a friend, who is also getting hooked on tarot, (yes, it's my fault) says we are not just collecting tarot, we are collecting art. That is what she tells her husband when he wonders how many decks she is going to need. maybe i should try it with my husband, too.
So i am going to have 8 decks. I think i would really like the Hallowquest/Arthurtian tarot, but that has to wait till next month.
9 decks is good.
And, i need the book that goes with robin wood...and really a few more books on tarot would be nice.
but i'm not going to trade my wicca books for tarot stuff like some people. i'm not that hooked...yet!

truthsayer  21 Aug 2002
cyan,
looks like you are off to a great start. you're getting 9 decks this month and more next. you've come up w/ a superb "pull the wool over the spouse's eyes" line that should work indefinitely. all the decks you are on the process of obtaining have the truthsayer seal of approval. 8)

2 recommendations: 1. if you get the john and caitlin matthews' arthurian tarot please be advised that this is more of a study/meditation deck than a reading deck. there are 2 books that are almost a must w/ this deck and it's like finding the body of jimmy hoffa to get a copy. the most important is the blue book called "hallowquest". the other is yellow named "the arthurian tarot course". there is a book that comes w/ the deck but it isn't adequate. sometimes you can find the hallowquest deck at amazon shops or half.com or abebooks.com. i found a copy of of the arthurian course by pure blind dumb luck in a used bookstore. i haven't seen it anywhere else.

2. the robin wood tarot book: the book is only slightly easier to obtain than the hallowquest books. you can order it thru robin's web site but she only takes money orders and checks. i managed to get my copy thru a seller at amazon shops. you might be able to find one at the suggestions above but good luck.

you're a brave soul to undertake the quest for the hallowquest and robin wood books. we salute you w/ a deck of choice. it's taken me close to 2 years to complete this particular quest. now i have more time to devote to my other tarot quests... ;)

thank you truthsayer for your kind words.
I will undertake my quest for Hallowquest next month and hope for success within a reasonable period of time.
I will admit that i want it because it is beautiful, not because i think i will be able to read it really well, so it is ok with me that it is a meditation deck.
Morgan Greer arrived yesterday and i honestly like it. I just wanted something prettier than my rider waite. i did not expect MG to be this lovely.
Art Nouveau arrived today, and isn't it lovely. I can see it is short of detail but that is more incentive to memorise, isn't it?
The people are lovely, I don't object to youth and beauty. The men are, as has been mentioned, rather... well-endowed, but i see no reason to complain about that. I like the deck.

It is so nice to be a tarotholic. And an Aeclecticholic. I spend so much time here that tomorrow i am going to go buy a new computer desk that is more, how do you say... ergonomic?...
I do hope this buying frenzy with tarot cards is not going to spill over into other areas of life.

Due to contractual conflicts
and my renewed negotiations
with Harpo Studios re: How much I have to pay
to get this book guaranteed a spot as Oprah's
"Book-of-the-Month" Choice before Christmas,
this post has been sent to the Union's Legal Dept...

for a tune up....
