Tarot Spell

I have one deck of Tarot cards (Universal Waite) since I'm a beginner and I've only used it for readings so far. I went out and bought "Tarot Spells" by Jenina Renee and so I want to try a spell. I was just wondering whether I need a brand new separate deck for spells alone (that would be problematic) or can I use the same one (which would really be ideal for me) and if I do use the same one do I need to cleanse it before trying a spell, if so how? Also how much of a role do accessories such as candles play? Would the spell be much weaker if I just use Tarot cards? thanks :)

Cally: I see no reason why you cannot use the deck you have available; however, strongly recommend cleansing or clearing it of its previous use.
Shuffling is one convenient way, making sure to do so throughly. Whilst shuffling, you can envision Light passing through your crown chakra (top of head), to your hands & enveloping the deck, clearing it of all old energies, associations.
Or putting all the cards in order: Majors first, followed by suits of Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles. Also envision them imbued with Light.
A prayer can also be incorporated, of your intent.
Any accoutrements used in spellwork are props. They are not necessarily essential, but can aid in setting the tone or atmosphere, the focus & the raising of power. Even the cards may be seen as a prop. It is the intent with which one proceeds.
If the focus or intent is not true, then no number of candles nor anything else will serve.

MeeWah always gives excellent advice - I have a couple of suggestions:

1. Don't fret about the props - they're only there to aid your imagination. :)

2. Do a reading for youself asking what the result will be if you cast your spell. In that way you take full reponsibility for your actions. })

Hi Cally!

I think the answers you've received from MeeWah and Major Tom - I'm not a spells person myself, but their words seem wise to me...!

I did reflect on your asking though, and thought I'd comment on that: I don't think you have to worry about what you can do with your deck and not, think of it as a companion, one who is your company wherever you go. Is it good for, and OK with you, it's OK with your deck to. The respect you pay your deck will show itself in your readings, but if you loose that personal connection (which is what I'd feel I was doing if I let other peoples rule set the limits for me and my deck) you hay have a hard time tuning in on the deck for readings or whatever you want to do with it.

There are many positions to take about issues like this one, many of them are represented here on the forum - and what I just wrote, well that's just MY idea...! Surf around here for a while and I think you'll realize one day that you do have an opinion of your own, some things people here say will make sense to you, others just won't "feel" right. That's just the way it should be, and that's what makes studying and living with the Tarot so special.

Love and light!
Jenny :)
