Favorite Devil card (to continue the trend)

I liked the idea of discussing why what our favorite depiction of a card was and why. I nearly posted this in the Death card thread until I realized I had it wrong.

So what's your Favorite Devil card, and why?

Mine is from the Whimisical deck (which I don't have) It's a marrionette, where you can see the puppet, strings, and the hand controling it.

I like this card because it takes the religion out of the meaning of the card. This card means 'manipulation' to me, and I feel like the Whimiscal deck captures that in it's simplest form. Many other decks I can see it in (the waite's for example) but the actual devil often seems to get in the way of the meaning.

My favorite is the whimsical devil too.
I love the fact that he has a pair of siccors in his back pocket. he can cut loose if he wants...its his one choice to be enslaved.

And i love the image on the robin wood devil. This is also about enslavement by choice. The can give up the tresure and walk in the light but they just don't!

For people not fimillair with the robin wood devil. Its shows a man and a women naked pulling both a chest with jewels etc in it. There in the dark and look scared. In the background is selvation in the for of an open door with a beautiful landscape. The could get there if they only let go of there tresure.

Love and light

What a coincidence, yesterday I was looking at the devil card of the Art Nouveau tarot (not the loScarabeo one) and I thought there should be a thread on devil cards. This is not my favourite devil, but it just struck me it was a deformed person and had a bird's head instead of a penis can't be much fun to have sex with him :D

But seriously: I agree with Maan, the devil card in Robin wood's tarot is soooo good. What a deck it would have been if she could have had more symbolism like that. The Celtic Dragon has a similar idea the card is even called Chains, but the picture of Robin Wood is much stronger.

Brings a whole new meaning to the term pecker doesnt it? :D

Anyway, as I mentioned on the Death thread, I love the World Spirt Devil. He handome, as i like my Devil's, and his slaved people the woman looks like shes inviting the male "in" so to speak even tho shes and he are both chained (and he possibly looks read to take the offer) Then there is all the other representations of earthly temptation around them, like food and gold (including an apple hehe), also a pair of handcuffs and a sword breaking the ground. He even has a couple animals assoiciated with the Devil, a goat and a snake. Very great card with tons going on.

Also, tho I dont really like the deck, I kind of like Connolley Materialism card. It shows a man who looks like Christ chained to the symbols of the four suits at his wrists and ankles. He is floating in dark storm clouds, and right behind him is a rainbow and a woman (who i think looks kind of like Magdalene), but he doesnt see them since he looking straight ahead. It shows how chained to the world you can get and forget to look around you for the good stuff.

Rohrigs Devil is a very attractive man as well, with slightly pointed ears. On one side is a woman looking down and seeming sad, on the other one of Rohrigs famous disembodied breasts, this one with a disembodied eye attached above it. The white notebook paper also has a sketch of the rider waite type Devil. Theres weire metal objects above, the books says they represent the dangers of the Devil energy, and that the more we mechanize our world the further we seperate ourselves from nature. I dont quite agree, but thats what the book says. Not that I give a rat's patootie about the books opinion since it is not written by the artist, its someone elses interpretation :)

Rohrigs Devil can be seen here

Well, my two favorite devil cards are listed already! I love the Whimsical one; I love how the scissors are in pinocchio's bac pocket - he's in control of how much he wants to be manipulated. And the Robin Wood one definitely shows enslavement by choice. Both excellent cards.

I prefer Devil card with less of the religious background attached to it. Although, like Liliana, I prefer a "handsome devil" ;)

I'm not sure I can qualify it as my favorite, but I certainly like the placement of Stalin in the St. Petersburg tarot.

On the flip side of the same coin as the Whimsicle, I prefer the Devil Card on the Inner Child Cards- meaning the Big Bad Wolf.

My favorite devil is one that's probably not going to be printed (see sketch below). :D That just depends on if I get off my hind end and finish the majors for my deck or not.

Of the printed decks, I'd say probably either the Robin Wood, or the Reed's Witches Horned One. The Robin Wood has more the traditional symbolism, but the Witches deck serves as more of a reminder that we are bound to the earth and ruled by the seasons. (Just a short interpretation made without the book - sort of a first impression.)

Liliana  07 Jul 2002
Crickets Devil kind of reminded me of this one, warning this one has some graphic nudity

Rhiannon  07 Jul 2002
I really like the Devil from the Robin Wood too. I like the idea of not having an actualy devil figure in the card. And it certainly expresses temptation well!

But the Fantastical tarot has a great Devil card WITH a devil image. He's just so cool looking... http://www.tarot.com/store/browse_deck.php?newdeck=52

Another vote for the Robin Wood Devil, here. I don't much care for the deck overall - don't dislike it, either, but am not passionate about it - but this card is definitely top-notch.

I kind of like the political-oppression slant of the Motherpeace Devil card, especially when I'm in one of those "Help! Help! I'm being repressed!" moods ;) though I do think that interpreting the Devil card as self-imposed chains is nearer the mark. Still, there's room for multiple facets/angles of meaning, especially with the majors.

Next to the Robin Wood, I'd have to pick the Devil card that exists only in my head: male protagonist staring at his reflection in a mirror, looking about as I've-hit-rock-bottom as it's possible to look, coming face-to-face for the first time with the knowledge of his own potential for evil as well as for good - necessary in order to attain growth and integration. We can't be truly virtuous until we understand, consciously, how truly awful we can be, and make a conscious choice, knowing that it is a choice.

wavebreaker  07 Jul 2002
I like the Devil in the Glastonbury Tarot: St. Dunstan tempted by a woman, with the devil in the background in the form of a spiral, waiting to suck in St. Dunstan as soon as he falls for the woman.

Another one I like is the Devil from the Rock & Roll Tarot, with the Rolling Stones and the lyrics "Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste".

emily2otters  07 Jul 2002
the new palladini devil scares the poop outta me. i can hear him breathing like a big old angry bull.

Why does it have to be a male protagonist? :) Sorry, couldn't resist playing "devil's advocate"... :D

The Spiral Tarot (my newest deck :)) has a Devil card similar to that. The Devil figure is holding up a mirror in which we see a woman reflected. She appears to be screaming so it's clear that she doesn't like what she sees. The neat part is that we don't see the actual woman so it's almost as if it's you being reflected!

Of course, that's ignoring gender and appearance, but I think it's still a neat idea.

It doesn't *have* to be. It *is* because the character in question happens to be male. ;) (As opposed to the female protagonist in the story.)

Would that all questions had such simple answers...

I've read similar reactions to the Morgan-Greer Devil, but you know, my reaction to it tends to be that it is almost a caricature, the kind of thing a teenager would idly draw on a notebook during a dull class, and so tends to evoke in me the opposite response: not fear, but laughter (of the "oh, come *on*" type), and consideration of whether I am exaggerating or "demonizing" something in my life that deserves a more temperate evaluation.

WolfSpirit  07 Jul 2002
The Kate Banx tarot is the only oneI've seen so far that has a female devil and a male being the "victim", apart from decks that only have female figures.

truthsayer  08 Jul 2002
my favorite devil has to be the one from the wheel of change. it's a humorous picture of a young man sitting on a got w/ a tamborine in his hand. he has a bowl w/ 2 tomatoes and a cucumber on top. i think it's supposed to suggest old pagan spring rituals. the young men calling the young women to the forest. i like the fact it's not christianized nor negative in connotation.

as far as more sophisticated devils go i like the rohrig. i like the devil in the rock and roll tarot. i can definitely see mick jagger of the rolling stones as the devil in their song. i like the song,"sympathy for the devil". it's a different view of satan. i really don't like traditional devils.

kayne  08 Jul 2002
This idea probably comes from my Cosmic Tribe background but I really like the idea of the Devil being about *Living for the moment despite the consequences*... sex, drugs and rock and roll... etc... this can be positive or negative and can still lead to being bound by this sort of lifestyle. Check out the Cosmic Tribe Devil.

jema  08 Jul 2002
i want to mention the devil from the halloween deck:)
i love that card! the devil looks like a classical cartoonish devil in a blue dress, horns and arrow-tail and all, with three toddlers in a leash

Major Tom  08 Jul 2002
At serious risk of sounding big-headed my favorite Devil card is the one I created for Major Tom's tarot. It features the demon cat (who is female by the way). The Devil is another card I believe should create a strong emotional response in the viewer and I'm particularly proud of my interpretation of this card. })

Starfish  08 Jul 2002
Major Tom -

I love your Devil card! :) The Demon Cat is perfect!!

:T9C Starfish

Maan  08 Jul 2002
I like your devil major Tom.

Sometime ago whe where discussing a Star trek deck and the devil whould have/should have been Q
I still ike that idea very much....it fits so perfect in my view of the devil!

Emily  08 Jul 2002
My favourite devil is again from the Spiral tarot. It shows the traditional devil, standing in flames with two people, man and woman, held by chains from around their necks and attached to two of his fingers, like puppets, they are holding up an ornate mirror in which a woman screams and holds out her hand which is also chained to the devil, the devil adds to the burden of the chained male and female by leaning on the mirror :)

truthsayer  08 Jul 2002
major tom, i tried and tried to think where i had seen the devil cat. yes, the devil cat is one of my favorites, too! as one owned by 3 cats, i personally know how true this is. you taken the little boogers into your heart and they take your soul! LOL

Jewel  08 Jul 2002
Well my favorite devil is the Cosmic Tribe devil (thanks for posting the link Kayne). It depicts mischief and temptation to me. I also love Major Tom's devil, as I am owned by two cats who think of me as "The Food Lady". And like many of you I also really like the Robin Wood devil, when I was starting out with Tarot that deck gave me the "AHA" moment of understading the dimensions of the Devil in Tarot.

darwinia  08 Jul 2002
I like the devil card in the Giotto tarot because he looks like a big, hairy, sensual, cruel beastie. I actually know a guy that looks like this with a huge head of hair and a large belly. This devil has that animalistic, primitive, sexual look about him.

My second favourite is the Victoria Regina devil. That creepy clown, as one reviewer of the deck stated, is just like the clown in Stephen King's book "It." It reminds me of things that are not what they appear to be, and the way the devil lures people in with his false face. Yikes.

You took the words right outta my mouth, Jema! I love her. She looks so fun and she's straight out of the song "Devil in a Blue Dress." I must get the Halloween!

And here's another vote for the handsome, sophisticated devil. My favorite Devil is the Rohrig -- he's so appealing and, um, *hot* that I just had to have the deck. He's magnetic! I also like the World Spirit, though I don't have it yet.

Liliana  08 Jul 2002
I know what you mean about the Rohrig Devil, just his PICTURE leads you in to temptation lol

my favorite devil is from the thoth deck.

This[attached] devil card is nice enough, although , I guess I should warn you that if you look close enough, it could be discribed as a little graphic.

Kaz  09 Jul 2002
i like your deck amounra, i want a copy when you finished it :-)

AmounrA  09 Jul 2002
Thanks:-) To be honest, I am thinking about re-doing that version.

Kyrielle  11 Jul 2002
For looks, I like the crafty scheming guy in the Castelli Art Nouveau. For concept, I like the Robin Wood, or the one from the Barnes and Noble Art of Tarot set with the little angel and devil over the woman's shoulders.
